Salary: £27-30k depending on experience (pro rata) Music Theatre Wales is one of Europe’s leading contemporary opera companies, recognised since its formation in 1988 as a vital force in opera, presenting bold new work that is characterised by the powerful impact it makes on audiences and artists alike. We work in association with the UK’s leading contemporary music ensemble, the London Sinfonietta, with whom all our productions are performed. In 2020, we will deliver two contrasting new works: February/March 2020 • Denis & Katya by Philip Venables and Ted Huffman has already proved to be an outstanding success with our co-producers at Opera Philadelphia where the work has been acclaimed as a totally new way of using opera and music theatre to engage with current social issues. Alongside this, we will run a Young People’s Consultation and Creative Project aimed at hard-to-reach young people in Newport and Mold. June/July and Autumn 2020 • Violet will be an equally powerful contemporary work which presents a female- centred plot that stands in stark contrast to most of the operatic canon. Composed by Tom Coult and written by Alice Birch – an outstanding and uncompromising theatre writer known for her strong females leads – Violet will give award-winning theatre director Rebecca Frecknall the chance to work in opera for the first time. -

Background 1.1 Wrexham County Borough Archives Service (the “Service”) was established in April 1996 under the requirements of Section 60 Local Government (Wales) Act 1996. Wrexham County Borough Local Studies Service was also formed in 1996 following local government re-organisation. The two Services became a joint service in 2003. 1.2 Prior to 1996 some records relating to Wrexham County Borough were deposited in the former Clwyd County Council record offices at Ruthin, Denbighshire and Hawarden, Flintshire. In principle, the Service would like certain classes of records transferred to Wrexham. This is subject to negotiation between the four Successor unitary Local Authorities of Clwyd County Council. 1.3 The Local Studies Service combined existing local studies collections from the former Wrexham Borough Council and the disaggregated collection from the former Clwyd County Council. A network of Local Studies Collections at Community Libraries was also established in 1996. 1.4 Wrexham Archives and Local Studies Service seeks to abide by all current archive legislation as it applies to local authority archive services in Wales. 1.5 Wrexham Archives and Local Studies Service is not approved as a repository to acquire Public Records, manorial records or Church in Wales Records, but is entitled to obtain surrogate copies of records held elsewhere in Wales that relate to the County Borough. 1.6 Wrexham Archives and Local Studies Service subscribes to the Archive Service Accreditation framework. -

Thank you for your interest in the role of Trustee on the Board of National Theatre of Wales (NTW). NTW collaborates with people and places to make extraordinary theatre that inspires change. We operate from a small base in Cardiff city centre, but the nation of Wales is our stage, and its incredible stories and wealth of talent is our inspiration. The role of the Board, and each of its members, is critical in bringing effective leadership, support and inspiration to the organisation as it enters a new period in its history during challenging times for the arts sector as a whole. Arts Council Wales – Written Evidence (LBC0292) All arts organisations – and many individuals – have been adversely impacted by the pandemic, some quite catastrophically. 1. The arts sector in Wales is largely made up of charities, community interest companies, social enterprises, and freelancers. Charitable organisations and individual creatives generally carry no sizeable reserves and, even when operating in normal circumstances, do not set out to make large profits. Any profit that’s made is generally re-invested back into enhancing delivery and extending the impact of arts activities. Some of our most effective and important organisations found themselves worst affected. 2. The loss of income from the closure of theatres and venues has been very serious. But current difficulties are exacerbated for those organisations (mostly venues) who achieve a high proportion of their income from ticket sales, retail income and other secondary spend. For example, under normal circumstances we applaud organisations like Chapter, Galeri in Caernarfon and Wales Millennium Centre for their success in operating with a low dependency on public funding. But with around 80% of their income coming from commercial activities, otherwise stable business models crashed overnight. 3. There’s also the potential impact on associated expenditure. The Wales Millennium Centre, for example, sustains 1,200 jobs onsite and has estimated its annual economic impact in Cardiff Bay to be around £70m per annum. Its eventual re-emergence from lock-down will almost certainly be as a ‘smaller’ organisation. The cumulative loss of income is very serious, to the organisations themselves and to the economy of Wales. 4. The Arts Council of Wales provides annual grant-in-aid support of around £27m to a nation-wide network of 67 key arts organisations – the Arts Portfolio Wales (APW). -

CHAPTER 6 Michael Berkeley and David Malouf’s Rewriting of Jane Eyre: An Operatic and Literary Palimpsest* Jean-Philippe Heberlé English composer Michael Berkeley (born 1948) is the son of Lennox Berkeley (1903–1989), himself a composer of instrumental music and operas including, for instance, A Dinner Engagement (1955) and Ruth (1955–56). To this day, Michael Berkeley has written three operas and is currently working on a new operatic project based on Ian McEwan’s novel Atonement (2001). For his first two operas (Baa Baa Black Sheep, 1993, and Jane Eyre, 2000), he collaborated with acclaimed Australian novelist David Malouf (born 1934). This chap- ter addresses Berkeley’s second opera, Jane Eyre, a chamber opera1 premiered at the Cheltenham Music Festival on June 30, 2000. The opera by David Malouf and Michael Berkeley appears to be an oper- atic and literary palimpsest in which Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is compressed and distorted into a concentrated operatic drama of little more than 70 minutes.2 Five characters form the cast, and the storyline focuses exclusively on the events at Thornfield. In this intertextual3 and intermedial4 analysis of Berkeley and Malouf’s operatic adapta- tion of Jane Eyre, a study of the text and the music reveals whether the librettist and the composer focalized or not on particular elements and episodes of the original novel. The artists at times amended, dis- torted, or retained elements of the novel, allowing their new work to interpret Charlotte Brontë’s novel’s psychologically developed char- acters and its gothic atmosphere. Finally, the opera and its libretto function metadramatically.
