For their new 40:42 EP released Thursday, the Grammy-winning band commissioned acclaimed jazz saxophonist Sam Gendel and the Connecticut rock quintet Goose to both create their own reinterpretations of the Father of the Bride album track. One twist though: Vampire Weekend gave Gendel and Goose the directive to turn their one minute and thirty-nine second long song into two twenty minute and twenty-one second versions (hence the title 40:42 ). In addition to fans being able to hear the two unique interpretations, Gendel and Goose both came with their own visuals. While Gendel's jazzy take comes with some improvisational animation, Goose chose to film themselves performing an intimate, up-close take on the song. Chernobyl and Stalker: ‘Splinters of the Soviet Empire’ Dr Nick Rush-Cooper, Teaching Fellow in the Department of Geography, University of Durham, UK. We are in pitch darkness. Maxim, the lead tour guide, leads the group of visitors from the front and takes us down a short corridor within the ruins of ‘Energetik’; the cultural centre of Pripyat, the town built to house the workers of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. I’m taking up the rear and a visitor turns to ask me where this leads. “To the back of the centre where we exit to reach where the Ferris wheel is” I tell them, though, in all honestly, that’s partly a guess and I’m not really sure. I may have visited the Zone almost a dozen times for the purposes of my PhD, and will visit over a dozen more, but this is only the second day I’m working as a tour guide[1] and I think that Maxim’s having some fun with me by taking the group through paths I’ve not used before. But it’s a short corridor and, soon enough, we emerge into the sunlight streaming into the small swimming pool at the back of the centre. We pause as visitors begin to take photographs, and I continue a conversation from earlier with a visitor; she explains to me that despite the bright sunlight and the sheer amount of greenery, she finds the place unsettling; “like a horror movie.” Another visitor chimes in; “or something like I Am Legend.” The first exclaims; “I’m amazed at how green it is; I’ve been playing a lot of Fallout 3, so I was expecting more of a wasteland.” As we speak a member of the group has jumped into the swimming pool to have a closer look at the old film reels that have been dumped there. -

Vroon, Chair What is the role of sociocultural history in the evolution of national identity? How is the worldview of Russian citizens reflected in contemporary art and popular culture? My dissertation, which examines narratives of national identity in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, approaches these questions and others through an historical analysis of Russian fantastika film adaptations and the literary works upon which they are based. Illustrating transitions in perceptions of Russian identity as they are reflected in over thirty examples of Soviet and post-Soviet fantastika, this project provides a critical reconsideration of historical theories on the “Russian idea” and offers new perspectives on what it means to be Russian in the twenty-first century. -

May 15, 2018 Christopher Pearson iv Nuts and Bolts, Golden Orbs, and Concrete Walls: Things in Roadside Picnic May 15, 2018 Christopher Pearson, MA English, Sonoma State University Abstract This paper seeks to discuss the representational objects of Boris and Arkady Strugatsky’s Roadside Picnic through Bill Brown’s idea of thing theory, which creates a distinction between an object and a thing based on the functionalities and relationships between individuals and their possessions, both through their semiotic nature and the ritualistic practices which encompass the creation and possession of a ‘thing’. Doing so allows Roadside Picnic’s first contact narrative to be read through an understanding of the reflective and introspective qualities of things, and the ways in which things reflect cultural values and realities of twentieth century life in the Soviet Union. Within the discussion of the objects of the text, the landscapes which define the text will be observed as equally important representations of humanity’s struggle with knowledge and control. -

Cherecwich Cook to Learn: A Food-Focused Curriculum for Grades 3-5 In this Integrated Master’s Project, I argue that a new curriculum is needed to address the following: (a) plant-based foods and from-scratch food preparation practices are strongly connected to positive outcomes for children, (b) diets high in processed foods can lead to negative health outcomes (c) students aged 8-10 are particularly well suited to learn more about food, (d) studying food offers many opportunities for interdisciplinary learning across many subjects (literacy, math, science and social studies) and (d) food-focused learning connects particularly well to common learning objectives for students in grades 3-5, yet (e) there is currently a dearth of appropriate curricular materials to meet the needs of today’s student population. -
