Roadside Picnic
ROADSIDE PICNIC Arkady and Boris Strugatsky Translated from the Russian by Antonina W. Bouis Cryptomaoist Editions FROM AN INTERVIEW BY A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT FROM HARMONT RADIO WITH DOCTOR VALENTINE PILMAN, RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS FOR 19.. "I suppose that your first serious discovery, Dr. Pilman, should be considered what is now called the Pilman Radiant?" "I don't think so. The Pilman Radiant wasn't the first, nor was it serious, nor was it really a discovery. And it wasn't completely mine, either." "Surely you're joking, doctor. The Pilman Radiant is a concept known to every schoolchild." "That doesn't surprise me. According to some sources, the Pilman Radiant was discovered by a schoolboy. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name. Look it up in Stetson's History of the Visitation -- it's described in full detail there. His version is that the radiant was discovered by a schoolboy, that a college student published the coordinates, but that for some unknown reason it was named after me." "Yes, many amazing things can happen with a discovery. Would you mind explaining it to our listeners, Dr. Pilman?" "The Pilman Radiant is simplicity itself. Imagine that you spin a huge globe and you start firing bullets into it. The bullet holes would lie on the surface in a smooth curve. The whole point of what you call my first serious discovery lies in the simple fact that all six Visitation Zones are situated on the surface of our planet as though someone had taken six shots at Earth from a pistol located some- where along the Earth-Deneb line. -

Real Rock: Authenticity and Popular Music in Canada, 1984-1994
REAL ROCK: AUTHENTICITY AND POPULAR MUSIC IN CANADA, 1984-1994 PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2018 © PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD, 2018 Abstract This dissertation investigates the production and reception of English-Canadian rock music sound recordings, from 1984 to 1994, in relation to mutually constitutive understandings of race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, age, and place. It examines how different forms of domestic Anglo rock served to reinforce or subvert the dominant ideologies undergirding the social order in Canada during the late twentieth century. This study analyzes a multifaceted discourse about authenticity that illustrates the ways in which a host of people – including musicians, music journalists, record label representatives and other professionals from across the music industries, government administrators, and consumers – categorized recorded sound, defined bodily norms, negotiated commerce and technology, and evaluated collective communication in Canada. This study finds that the principle of originality fundamentally structured the categorization of sound recordings in Canada. Originality, according to rock culture, encompassed the balancing of traditionalism with innovation. This dissertation determines that Whiteness organized English-Canadian rock culture in terms of its corporeal standards. White bodies functioned as the norm against which racialized Others were compared and measured. This study also shows how the concept of autonomy encouraged the proper negotiation of commerce and technology in an increasingly neoliberal political and economic condition. Independence of will fostered acceptable behaviour. Finally, this dissertation reveals that the rock status of a given concert rested upon the actions of the performers as well as the composition and reactions of ticket holders in the audience. -

Looking for a Place to Happen Collective Memory, Digital Music Archiving, and the Tragically Hip Alan Galey
Looking for a Place to Happen Collective Memory, Digital Music Archiving, and the Tragically Hip alan galey ABSTRACT This article takes the Canadian band the Tragically Hip as a case study in pro-amateur digital music archiving and also considers the larger place of the band’s music within the context of cultural memory. After lead singer and lyricist Gord Downie’s cancer diagnosis in 2016, the band made the remarkable decision to undertake a Canadian tour, which became one of the most obsessively docu- mented rock tours in Canadian history. Drawing on close readings of the band’s performances and some of the digital records that capture them, the article argues for the importance of considering questions of evidence and memory together, especially in the context of archiving popular music. The article begins with a discussion of the Tragically Hip’s value as an archival case study, which is based on the band’s linking of composition and live improvisation. It then turns to the engagement of the band’s songs with the materials of Canadian collective memory, the work of bootleg collectors and pro-am archivists in the documenta- tion of performance history, and the documentation of the band’s final Canadian tour in 2016. Throughout, the article examines how professional and pro-am archiving can complement each other in the case of a band like the Hip, whose music is so closely linked to the idea of Canadian collective memory. Archivaria The Journal of the Association of Canadian Archivists Looking for a Place to Happen 7 RÉSUMÉ Cet article utilise le groupe canadien The Tragically Hip comme étude de cas de l’archivage de musique numérique pro-amateur et aborde aussi la place plus large qu’occupe la musique de ce groupe dans le contexte de la mémoire culturelle. -

Canadians bid adieu to beloved band whose singer is dying he rock concert did not begin with a rock song. Instead, it started with flag-waving fans breaking into a national Tanthem, “O Canada.” The impromptu tribute by an emotion- al sold-out crowd that included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began what was expected to be the final performance Saturday by Tragically Hip, a group known as Canada’s Band, and lead singer and songwriter Gord Downie, dubbed Canada’s unofficial poet laureate. Downie has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and fans across Canada and abroad gathered at viewing parties to tune in and bid him farewell. The bluesy rock band is better known as The Hip, and Downie is known for penning paeans to Canadian life: about hockey and desolate small towns, about literature and the French explorer who named Canada. Being so defiantly Canadian might be one reason why The Hip sent nine of its 13 albums to No. 1 in Canada, but none above the top 100 in the US. After spending three decades together, The Hip returned on Saturday night to where they began as a college rock band, the Lake Ontario city of Kingston.
