In the present study, the aim was to evaluate the protective effects of rosmarinic acid on selenite-induced cataractogenesis in Sprague-Dawley rat pups. The animals were randomly divided into five groups, each of which consisted of 10 rat pups. Group I served as normal control (vehicle administration). For testing cataract induction, animals of Groups II, III, IV, and V were administered a single subcutaneous injection of sodium selenite (2.46 mg/kg body weight) on postpartum day 12. -

Today, the common and selective drugs for the treatment of CL are antimonial compounds present some limitations to their usage. The objective of this study is to investigate the cytotoxic and antileishmanial effects of various extracts of Capparis spinosa L. on the in vitro model. Materials and Methods: The primary phytochemical analysis of the C. spinosa extracts was performed to assess the presence of tannins, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids, and glycosides. Furthermore, the in vitro cytotoxic and antileishmanial effects of C. spinosa extracts on Leishmania tropica promastigote were evaluated. Additionally, these effects on the J774-A1 macrophage cells by colorimetric cell viability 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol- 2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay were also assessed. Results: In this study, the findings of primary phytochemical screening of the C. spinosa extracts demonstrated the existence of flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, glycosides, and alkaloids in this plant. -

Bug of the Month by Jim Revell / November 2016 Eumorpha pandorus | Pandora Sphinx Eumorpha pandorus Pandora Sphinx Class: Insecta (Insects) Order: Lepidoptera Family: Sphingidae (Sphinx Moths) Genus: Eumorpha Species: pandorus (Pandora Sphinx) I love the phrase by Duke Elsner of Michigan State University Extension. In his post, he called the Sphinx Moth Caterpillars “the big cats of the vineyard.” How true it is! A member of the Hornworm group, one of these was found on my grapevines in September by a visiting MG Trainee. The caterpillar comes in green, orange, pink and cinnamon-to-dark brown. The one found on my grapevines was cinnamon-to-dark brown. The photo at top right shows this coloration and was taken by Maryann Frazier at Penn State Entomology Extension. Distinguishing marks and notes regarding this interesting caterpillar: They are large and can reach over five inches in length. They have pale-to-yellow spots surrounding spiracles A3-A7 (my caterpillar had white markings). In early to middle instars, the rear horn is thin and coiled. In the last instar, the horn is replaced by a button which resembles an eye-spot. These “cats” are feisty and will whip their front body part back and forth, regurgitating food to try and stop predators (including humans) from attacking. They feed on peppervine, grapevine and Virginia Creeper. Upon reaching maturity, the “cats” tunnel into the soil and build pupation chambers several inches below ground. In sandy soil, these chambers may be a foot below surface. The cocoons are reddish brown to dark brown and can be two inches in length. -

Before 1952, the Delmarva Peninsula was isolated, and no development of any kind occurred. The population was stable, with no in migration, and the attitudes were rural. The economy was sagging. Then a bridge was built across the Chesapeake Bay, and the peninsula became a recreation resource for the Baltimore and Washington areas. Ocean City and Rehoboth, the major resorts, have grown rapidly since then. In 1964, the opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel further accellerated growth. There are presently plans for the development of a National Seashore on Assateague Island, home of the Chincoteague ponies, as well as state parks along the Chesapeake Bay, and such facilities as a causeway through the ocean and a residential complex in the Indian River Bay.
