Las o!cinas son sobrias, en un recuperado edi!cio con siglos de historia en la calle República de Cuba. Doce personas (de planta, después serán algunas más) trabajan arduamente pero sin urgencias para que del dos al 20 de mayo los capitalinos y sus visitantes disfrutemos de un festival con mayúsculas. Gerardo Estrada, Director del Festival, nos recibe con naturalidad y responde a nuestras preguntas con franqueza y sin querer aderezar nada. Está seguro de la calidad del concepto y los eventos. Nos cuenta que es importante para él que la participación de artistas nacionales y extranjeros sea equilibrada. Su fórmula: “rigor, calidad y novedad”. Le preguntamos por “el plato fuerte” del festival y nos comenta que bien puede ser el programa de música de cámara de Minería y la presencia de Phillippe Quint. Gerardo Estrada, Director del Festival del Centro Histórico. # Nos ha llamado la atención la imagen grá!ca, así que contactamos con su autor, el poeta y dibujante, Alejandro Magallanes, quien nos explica en un correo electrónico: “Es una representación dual que convive en un mismo cuerpo, un ángel y un diablo, el bien y el mal, lo apolíneo y lo dionisiaco, etcétera. El cuerpo se forma de órbitas concéntricas, las extremidades de los personajes giran (a veces las cabezas están encontradas, a veces alejadas, al igual que las manos y los pies). Esto tiene el objetivo de que la representación no sea estática, aunque también pueda leerse como la relatividad de las posturas (ángel y demonio). El trazo es simple, un dibujo cuya línea por la apariencia es humorística”. Tal vez, dirá un espectador, en la idea originaria de festivales, como en los carnavales, o en el arte, la dualidad del bien y el mal puedan moverse de lugar y hasta asociarse. Quizá ese trazo humorístico sea un guiño, una invitación. En cuanto a lo programado para el festival “grande”, el del Centro Histórico, probablemente la !gura de mayor renombre que se presentará sea Patti Smith, mujer dedicada a la poesía y a la música que encarnó en sí misma el movimiento punk y hasta lo superó. Esta suerte de sacerdotisa del rock se presentará en el Museo Anahuacalli el cinco de mayo. A propósito, a las o!cinas llega un adolescente con acento argentino y pregunta por el precio de los boletos en preventa y se retira decepcionado, pues había entendido que el precio era menor. Será uno de los eventos más caros, junto con la puesta en escena de Blanca Nieves del ballet francés Preljocaj. Sin embargo, también actuarán grupos de danza de Montreal y músicos de todas las latitudes a precios accesibles. Toda la información sobre espectáculos sedes, precios y horarios se puede consultar en Internet. Hacia el !nal de nuestra visita, Zaira, de Comunicación es más que diligente y amable al entregarnos un disco con las imágenes que le solicitamos. Salimos de las o!cinas para sentir el pulso siempre poderoso del Centro Histórico con todo su pasado !jo en anchos muros de piedra, sus tramos de decadencia insalvable, y su esplendor, que no es tanto el que se intentan rescatar a fuerza de inversiones sino el del arte y la historia que están reservados a quienes miran con sinceridad. ; La Academia de Música y el Festival En la idea de la Academia y la música de cámara se dirige a un público más selecto, más conocedor, se tocan piezas menos conocidas y se pone en juego el talento especial de cada músico. Sin embargo, al an!teatro Simón Bolívar en San Ildefonso, recinto de lujo, también nos acercaremos muchos a conocer y a Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, vista del patio. aprender. Carlos de la Mora, Presidente de la AMPM, nos cuenta que fue Carlos Miguel Prieto quien siete años atrás invitó a Philippe Quint como solista y que fue este gran violinista quien propuso la idea del Festival de Música de Cámara.     A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

The music loving public reacted instantly and whole- heartedly, buying up all the Sydney tickets weeks in advance, and Registered Office: 141 Dowlirig Street, Woolloornooloo 201 surprising the A.B.C. and Opera management with its enthusiasm. His dedication to exploring different styles and genres with an award winning discography has solidified him as one of the foremost violinists of today. Receiving several Grammy nominations for his two albums of Korngold and William Schuman Concertos, Mr. Quint is in constant demand worldwide appearing with major orchestras at venues ranging from the Gewandhaus in Leipzig to Carnegie Hall in New York. Philippe Quint plays the magnificent 1708 "Ruby" Antonio Stradivari violin on loan to him through the generous efforts of The Stradivari Society®.
