THE CHRONICLE REVIEW How RightWing Billionaires Infiltrated Higher Education By Jane Mayer FEBRUARY 12, 2016 If there was a single event that galvanized conservative donors to try to wrest control of higher education in America, it might have been the uprising at Cornell University on April 20, 1969. That afternoon, during parents’ weekend at the Ithaca, N.Y., campus, some 80 black students marched in formation out of the student union, which they had seized, with their clenched fists held high in blackpower salutes. To the shock of the genteel Ivy League community, several were brandishing guns. At the head of the formation was a student who called himself the "Minister of Defense" for Cornell’s AfroAmerican Society. Strapped across his chest, Pancho Villastyle, was a sashlike bandolier studded with bullet cartridges. Gripped nonchalantly in his right hand, with its butt resting on his hip, was a glistening rifle. Chin held high and sporting an Afro, goatee, and eyeglasses reminiscent of Malcolm X, he was the face of a drama so infamous it was regarded for years by conservatives such as David Horowitz as "the most disgraceful occurrence in the history of American higher education." John M. Olin, a multimillionaire industrialist, wasn’t there at Cornell, which was his alma mater, that weekend. He was traveling abroad. But as a former Cornell trustee, he could not have gone long without seeing the iconic photograph of the armed protesters. What came to be known as "the Picture" quickly ricocheted around the world, eventually going on to win that year’s Pulitzer Prize. -

Instead of an olive branch and arrows in the Amer- ican eagle’s right and left talons, Georgetown’s eagle is clutching a globe and calipers in its right talon and a cross in its left talon. The American seal’s eagle holds a banner in its beak that states, E Pluribus Unum, or “Out of Many, One”, in reference to the many different people and states creating a union. The Georgetown seal’s eagle holds a banner in its beak that states, Utraque Unum. As the official motto of Georgetown University, Utraque Unum is often translated as “Both One” or “Both and One” and is taken from Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians. This motto is found in a Latin translation of Ephesians 2:14: ipse est enim pax nostra qui fecit utraque unum. The King James Version of the Bible says, “For He [Christ] is our peace, who hath made both one”. Utraque Unum is the Latin phrase to describe Paul’s concept of unity between Jews and Gentiles; that through Jesus Christ both are one. In view of the Georgetown seal, the motto represents pursuing knowledge of the earthly (the world and calipers) and the spiritual (the cross). -

The 2018- 2019 CAS 50th anniversary celebration featured a plenary session at NEIU’s Annual Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium, as well as a series of guest lectures in the College’s anchor areas of Humanities, Fine Arts, Social/Behavioral Sciences, and STEM. The 2018-2019 academic year was bookended by a fall reception to launch the 50th anniversary celebration and a spring picnic to wrap up the year’s commemorative activities. The 50th Anniversary Lecture Series opened with a talk on “The Linguistic Significance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Implications for Sociolinguistic Justice,” by Walt Wolfram, William C. -

PHYLON About the Guest Editors: June Gary Hopps the Thomas M. “Jim” Parham Professor of Family and Children Studies in the School PHYLON of Social Work at the University of Georgia. She is a graduate of Spelman College in THE CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY Atlanta; she also served on its Board of Trustees as both a member and chair for many years. Dr. Hopps earned a master of social work degree from Atlanta University and a REVIEW OF RACE AND CULTURE Ph.D. in social welfare from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Dr. Hopps joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 2000. Earlier, she was professor and Dean for nearly a quarter century at the Boston College School of Social Work. She was the first African American and the youngest person to serve as dean of the School th of Social Work. Dr. Hopps was the first African Americans to serve as editor-in-chief of Social Work, the flagship journal of the National Association of Social Workers. She is a past recipient of the Significant Lifetime Achievement in Social Work Education of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award from the Council on Social Work Education. The award recognizes exemplary School of Social Work Special Volume accomplishments in research, teaching pedagogy, curriculum development and organizational leadership over an entire career. Student Rights & Responsibilities 2020-21 Chicago Public Schools Student Bill of Rights PREAMBLE Every student has rights. A right is a freedom or protection that a person has. Rights define what is allowed of a person or owed to a person. Your rights are part of you regardless of your age, race, creed, color, gender, gender identity, gender expression, religion, national origin, citizenship/ immigration status, weight, sexual orientation, physical and/or emotional condition, disability, marital status, or political beliefs. Your rights belong to you and cannot be threatened or taken away. The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Student Bill of Rights (SBOR) is a living document that spells out the rights that every student has and that everyone, including students themselves, should respect. This living document can evolve with student sentiment, policy and societal change. This can happen by talking about the SBOR, by putting it into everyday action, and through amendments over time by students, families, communities, teachers, and administrators. The purpose of the SBOR is to clarify, protect, and promote students’ basic rights. Sharing the SBOR is an expression of the dignity and value of all students. Many people were involved in creating the CPS SBOR including staff from various CPS departments and even students like you. The rights listed in the document come from many sources: existing local, state, and federal laws including, Chicago Board of Education policies, and examples of SBORs from other school districts. The CPS SBOR is also inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which expresses the basic freedoms owed to all human beings.
