  • Military Transformation on the Korean Peninsula: Technology Versus Geography
THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL Military Transformation on the Korean Peninsula: Technology Versus Geography Being a Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy At the University of Hull By Soon Ho Lee BA, Sungkyunkwan University, Republic of Korea, 2004 MA, The University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, 2005 MRes, King’s College London, United Kingdom, 2006 1 Acknowledgement I am the most grateful to my Supervisor Dr. David Lonsdale for his valuable academic advice and support during the long PhD journey. To reach this stage, I have had invaluable support from my family back in Korea and my dear wife Jin Heon. I would also like to thank my family for being so patient while I was researching. During this journey, I have obtained a precious jewel in my daughter, Da Hyeon. I will pray for you all my life. I would like to give special thanks to my late grandfather who gave me the greatest love, and taught me the importance of family. 2 Thesis Summary This thesis provides an explanation of one RMA issue: the effectiveness of contemporary military technology against tough geography, based upon case studies in the Korean peninsula. The originality of the thesis is that it will provide a sound insight for potential foes’ approach to the dominant US military power (superior technology and sustenance of war). The North Korean defence strategy – using their edge in geography and skill – tried to protect themselves from the dominant US power, but it may be impossible to deter or defeat them with technological superiority alone.

  • The Rise of China with Cultural Soft Power in the Age of Globalization
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, May 2018, Vol. 8, No. 5, 763-778 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2018.05.006 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Rise of China with Cultural Soft Power in the Age of Globalization WU You School of Foreign Studies/ Center for Global Studies, Shanghai University Culture has been exerting an even greater influence on China’s image construction and nation branding in today’s globalizing world. As “culture” is the core of Chinese soft power strategy, the concept of “soft power” has been redefined as “cultural soft power” in the Chinese context. Cultural instruments, including the Chinese language as well as traditional and popular cultures, are widely implemented as the “charm” tools to wield and project China’s soft power. Cultural diplomacy is also viewed as an effective way to promote an understanding of China’s ideals, support Chinese economic goals and enhance Chinese national security in subtle, wide-ranging, and sustainable ways. Although Chinese soft power is still in its “embryonic phase”, partly due to its close link to the country’s economic performance and huge market attraction as well as the disadvantages generated by the political and ideological issues, it has contributed greatly to expand China’s international influence and create a circle of like-minded allies on its periphery, in which process its increasing importance shall not be neglected. Keywords: Chinese culture, soft power, cultural influence, cultural diplomacy, globalization Cultural influence, besides the continued momentum of economic growth and military strengthening, becomes more and more important in an ever-increasingly interdependent and interconnected world, which turns out to be a crucial factor in expanding China’s international influence today.

Morley for the degree of Master ofArts in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program: Asian Studies to be taken June 2009 Title: THE GODDESSES' SHRINE FAMILY: THE MUNAKATA THROUGH THE KAMAKURA ERA This thesis presents an historical study ofthe Kyushu shrine family known as the Munakata, beginning in the fourth century and ending with the onset ofJapan's medieval age in the fourteenth century. The tutelary deities ofthe Munakata Shrine are held to be the progeny ofthe Sun Goddess, the most powerful deity in the Shinto pantheon; this fact speaks to the long-standing historical relationship the Munakata enjoyed with Japan's ruling elites. Traditional tropes ofJapanese history have generally cast Kyushu as the periphery ofJapanese civilization, but in light ofrecent scholarship, this view has become untenable. Drawing upon extensive primary source material, this thesis will provide a detailed narrative ofMunakata family history while also building upon current trends in Japanese historiography that locate Kyushu within a broader East Asian cultural matrix and reveal it to be a central locus of cultural production on the Japanese archipelago.

  • Impact of the Medical Tourism Market on the Hotel Industry in South Korea: Focus on 5-Star Hotels
Impact of the Medical Tourism Market on the Hotel Industry in South Korea: Focus on 5-Star Hotels Kwang-Woo Lee Nutrition, Hospitality, and Retailing Texas Tech University Hyun-Suk Choi Nutrition, Hospitality, and Retailing Texas Tech University And Min-Sun Jeon The School of Food Science and Food Service Industry Yeungnam University ABSTRACT As many other countries are capitalizing on the trend of supporting medical tourism, the South Korea government also has actively encouraged international and medical tourism. The South Korea government has put a lot of effort into attracting more international tourists, and the South Korea enjoyed the largest one-year increase in tourism from international tourists in 2009. The future prospects for the hotel industry are optimistic. However, given the lack of research data, the level and quality of services for individual hotels participating in medical tourism is unknown. The study will be conducted in Seoul and Pusan city in South Korea between November and December of 2010. The major 5-star hotels in these cities will be included in the study. An online survey will be conducted to identify the level of services provided by the hotels in these two cities. The participants will be executive managers of the hotels where medical- tourism products play an important or fairly important role. Keywords: Medical tourism , South Korea, International tourist INTRODUCTION Medical tourism refers to “travel activity across international borders to obtain medical care” (C. Lee & Spisto, 2007). Medical travel has increased dramatically over the past several years. As consumers now are faced with long waiting lists, high costs, and lack of insurance, they are seeking alternative sources for medical care — medical travel (Connell, 2006; Hume & DeMicco, 2007).

Original Articles PNIE 2021;2(2):120-128 https://doi.org/10.22920/PNIE.2021.2.2.120 pISSN 2765-2203, eISSN 2765-2211 Genetic Diversity and Population Genetic Structure of Black-spotted Pond Frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus) Distributed in South Korean River Basins Jun-Kyu Park1 , Nakyung Yoo2 , Yuno Do1* 1Department of Biological Science, Kongju National University, Gongju, Korea 2National Institute of Ecology, Research Center for Endangered Species, Yeongyang, Korea ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to analyze the genotype of black-spotted pond frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus) using seven micro- satellite loci to quantify its genetic diversity and population structure throughout the spatial scale of basins of Han, Geum, Yeong- san, and Nakdong Rivers in South Korea. Genetic diversities in these four areas were compared using diversity index and inbreeding coefficient obtained from the number and frequency of alleles as well as heterozygosity. Additionally, the population structure was confirmed with population differentiation, Nei’s genetic distance, multivariate analysis, and Bayesian clustering analysis. Interestingly, a negative genetic diversity pattern was observed in the Han River basin, indicating possible recent habitat disturbances or population declines. In contrast, a positive genetic diversity pattern was found for the population in the Nakdong River basin that had remained the most stable. Results of population structure suggested that populations of black-spotted pond frogs distributed in these four river basins were genetically independent. In particular, the population of the Nakdong River basin had the greatest genetic distance, indicating that it might have originated from an independent population. These results support the use of genetics in addition to designations strictly based on geographic stream areas to define the spatial scale of populations for management and conservation practices.

  • Chinese Views of Korean History in the Cold War Era Jin Linbo 150 | Joint U.S.-Korea Academic Studies
Chinese Views of Korean History in the Cold War Era Jin Linbo 150 | Joint U.S.-Korea Academic Studies This chapter draws a rough sketch of the evolution of Chinese views on Korean history in the Cold War era in three parts. The first focuses on the formulation of Chinese views of the Korean War in 1950 and the mainstream assessment of the war after Sino-South Korean diplomatic normalization in 1992. The second focuses on China’s attitudes and policies toward the two Koreas in the Cold War years. The third deals with the changes and limits of perceptions on Korean history after diplomatic normalization and their impact on bilateral relations between Beijing and Seoul. For centuries many Chinese have firmly believed that the relationship between China and the Korean Peninsula is like that between lips and teeth, they are not only close to but also dependent upon each other. If the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold. From the middle of nineteenth century, the geopolitical proximity and interdependence between the two have become the determining factors in formulating Chinese perceptions towards Korea. Since then the national security concerns symbolized by the sense of lips and teeth had been frequently stressed by some Chinese intellectuals and officials when both China and Korea were exposed to the growing imperialist expansion and geopolitical competition in East Asia. In order to maintain the traditional tributary relationship between China and Korea, China fought the first Sino-Japanese War in 1894-95. Although it was miserably defeated, and Korea was consequently annexed to the Japanese empire in 1910, the Chinese sense of lips and teeth remained undiminished.
