From Jan. 26, 1985 to Dec. 22, 1995, NM State ran off 16 consecutive wins against the Lobos. UNM followed that up with a 22-game winning streak over the Aggies that encompassed 11 years. The Aggies ended their losing streak to the Lobos in 2007 with a 16-point victory at home on Dec. 2. Since that NM State victory UNM has won five straight in the series. Aggie head coach Darin Spence is 1-13 all-time against the Lobos. Scouting the Lobos The New Mexico Lobos (3-2) of the Mountain West Conference visit the Pan American Center in Las Cruces for their first road game of the year. UNM opened the season with an 80-53 loss at home to Texas Tech. The Lobos rebounded with three consecutive wins. UNM beat UC Irvine 71-59 and California 63-54 in double overtime. The Lobos made it three straight over California schools with a 73-38 win over San Francisco in their Thanksgiving Tour- nament before falling to Oklahoma State 74-65 in their second double overtime game of the season. On the hardwood, UNM averages 65.0 points per game while shooting a 33.8 field goal percentage. The Lobos hold opponents to 61.0 points per game and a 33.9 percent clip from the floor which ranks at No. 34 in the nation. UNM ranks No. 14 nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense as opponents make just 22.4 percent from the floor. The Lobos also rate No. 38 in the country with 5.2 blocks per game. Junior 6-1 guard Porche Torrance is a big reason for high rank in blocks accounting for half of the Lobos’ 26 swats this season to rank No. 24 in the country at 2.6 per game. Torrance and fellow junior guard Lauren Taylor lead UNM in scoring. Taylor leads the squad at 12.9 ppg while Torrance is the only other Lobo averag- ing double figures at 10.4 while leading the team at 67.7 percent from the field. Torrance also leads the team in rebounds at 6.6 per game. Torrance and Taylor have started four games for UNM this year while senior forward Amanda Best and freshman guard Tina Doughty have started all five games this season. Doughty leads the team with 15 assists. Last Time against the Lobos ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Dec. 20, 2009) - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team fell behind early to New Mexico in the final game of the 2009-10 Rio Grande Rivalry and could not recover falling 81-64 at the Pit in Albuquerque Sunday afternoon. Despite outscoring the Lobos in the second half 38-34, the Aggies’ halftime deficit was too much to overcome. NM State held UNM to just 20 percent (5-of-25) shooting in the second stanza to get back into the game after the half. After a bucket by junior guard Jasmine Lowe, NM State trailed 71-60 with 3:32 remaining in the game.
