I fi gured I needed to see it once in my life, so I set the VCR to record it at midnight.” He watched it the next morning and was enchant- ed by the epic work of cinema from the legendary German director. But there was one problem. “It had this dreadful musical score that sounded like it came from a Laurel and Hardy comedy, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fi lm,” Schaaf says. “I told myself, ‘I can do better than this.’” And he did. • Ellen Glasgow's in This Our Life
69 Ellen Glasgow’s In This Our Life DOI: 10.2478/abcsj-2019-0016 American, British and Canadian Studies, Volume 33, December 2019 Ellen Glasgow’s In This Our Life: “The Betrayals of Life” in the Crumbling Aristocratic South IULIA ANDREEA MILICĂ Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania Abstract Ellen Glasgow’s works have received, over time, a mixed interpretation, from sentimental and conventional, to rebellious and insightful. Her novel In This Our Life (1941) allows the reader to have a glimpse of the early twentieth-century South, changed by the industrial revolution, desperately clinging to dead codes, despairing and struggling to survive. The South is reflected through the problems of a family, its sentimentality and vulnerability, but also its cruelty, pretensions, masks and selfishness, trying to find happiness and meaning in a world of traditions and codes that seem powerless in the face of progress. The novel, apparently simple and reduced in scope, offers, in fact, a deep insight into various issues, from complicated family relationships, gender pressures, racial inequality to psychological dilemmas, frustration or utter despair. The article’s aim is to depict, through this novel, one facet of the American South, the “aristocratic” South of belles and cavaliers, an illusory representation indeed, but so deeply rooted in the world’s imagination. Ellen Glasgow is one of the best choices in this direction: an aristocratic woman but also a keen and profound writer, and, most of all, a writer who loved the South deeply, even if she exposed its flaws. Keywords : the South, aristocracy, cavalier, patriarchy, southern belle, women, race, illness The American South is an entity recognizable in the world imagination due to its various representations in fiction, movies, politics, entertainment, advertisements, etc.: white-columned houses, fields of cotton, belles and cavaliers served by benevolent slaves, or, on the contrary, poverty, violence and lynching.

  • Star Kandi Burruss Is Engaged
‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ Star Kandi Burruss Is Engaged By Nic Baird Kandi Burruss, from Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta is engaged to her costar, line producer Todd Tucker, Burruss’s rep confirmed to People. The reality star couple first met when filming the fourth season of Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2011. Buruss is a Grammy Award winner known for writing TLC’s hit “No Scrubs,” Destiny Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” and Pink’s “There You Go.” Her upcoming show, The Kandi Factory, follows her as she searches for the next big pop talent. She also has an 11-year-old daughter, Riley, from a previous relationship. How do you announce your engagement to your children? Cupid’s Advice: There’s a lot of pressure to make sure your relationship doesn’t affect your child. This priority can make sudden changes to your family seem more stressful then they should. Sit down with your child, have the discussion, and simultaneously create a healthier family unit. Here’s how: 1. Treat them with respect:When discussing your new engagement with your children, you have to give their feelings and questions the attention they deserve without dismissing any discussion. Make sure they understand how much you appreciate them as part of your life. Let them know this new arrangement doesn’t change your love for them. This is an addition to the family, not a subtraction. 2. Talk to them with your fiancé: A united front means making decisions as a parenting unit. If you’re getting married, it means that your partner will fill this role to some degree.

However, before the alarm bells start ringing, let us clarify: we are no longer in the golden age of entertainment because today, entertainment is everything. We live in an attention economy where viewership, clicks, and likes control influence, relevance, and the bottom line. Consequently, every experience, product, and piece of content is being created with the entertainment factor in mind—from news stories and video tutorials to influencer personas and bathrooms (yes, bathrooms). All of this sounds good in theory—after all, who doesn’t love to be entertained?! But for marketers and content creators, it means that creating compelling media has gotten that much harder.

White House Interview Program DATE: November 2, 1999 INTERVIEWEE: ROMAN POPADIUK INTERVIEWER: Martha Kumar [Disc 1 of 1] MK: It’s on the record except where you want to go on background or off the record. Ultimately, it will end up in the library. RP: This library? MK: Yes. You get a choice of what library it goes into so I’m assuming it will be in this library. The project is trying to develop an institutional memory for seven White House offices, and Press [Office] is one of them. It’s a group of presidency scholars that are working on the project. George Edwards is one of them. We will come out in March or April with a group of standards of a successful start, which are some elements that are common to successful transitions. Then the offices’ material will be made available; some of it will probably be made available at the time the transition teams are put together. The full text of interviews will not be released until after a new president comes in. RP: Okay. Sounds good. MK: Starting off, can you talk about how you got into the White House, and how long you were? Let’s start with that, and how you got in. RP: How I actually got in to the White House? MK: Yes. RP: Well, it was back in February of 1985, but I didn’t start in the Press Office. I’ll give you a long story here. Prior to that I was in the operations [center] over at the State Department, one of the watch officers/editors I guess we were called, if I recall correctly.

The success of the series that led to her award is a direct correlation to the large crowds that the film attracted when it made its debut in 2008. What is astounding, is that in 2007 only five of the fifty top grossing movies in American had a woman as a lead character , so not surprisingly critics throughout the nation were stunned at the great success the film Sex and the City had on its opening weekend. While critics were astounded, loyal fans predicted the success. The popularity of the film may perhaps be indicative of the times . This film came three years after the season finale of the HBO series also titled, Sex and the City . The series began at the peak of an ambitious female generation, empowered by third wave, and post-modern feminist movements. It may be that the emergence of a series that features the lives of four New York City women whose motto is to “do it like a man,” is the reason for the incredible following the series has had since its public debut.
