Every year there are new trends you notice while walking the halls of a high school or even just walking the streets of a city, but is there a way to predict these trends? And who controls what the trends will become? Girls, and even guys, cut, style and color their hair at certain times of the year and some wonder if there is any correlation between new rising celebrities and new trends. Celebrities control a lot of the media and choices of young impressionable minds. Many girls, and guys, can be seen sporting a bold lip thanks to Kylie Jenner and her new lip kit. Many other girls can be seen with bold brows and flawless skin thanks to many young celebrities setting other makeup trends. Celebrities can also be considered the biggest contributor to new hair trends. According to Natalie Roytman who wrote “How Celebrities Inspire Fashion Of The Youth”, “Famous women with edgy, scandalous styles like Miley Cyrus and Rihanna inspire the youth to try new things and to be creative with their style.” She talks about how Rihanna inspired youth to try the side shaved head and Miley to try spunky and fun. Contrary to what people on the internet say about celebrities inspiring young minds and hair styles, after interviewing students, 4 out of 5 students said they were not inspired by celebrities’ hair styles, and the 1 of 5 students that said they were inspired by celebrities were people inspired by sport celebrities. We often see news stories about new trends that celebrities start, but most students were not inspired or affected by the celebrities’ hair trends. Most students I talked to were inspired by sports players and others were ‘inspired’ by what they think looks good on them. Even though the students claimed that celebrities did not inspire their hair choices, it is almost impossible to avoid the celebrity’s trends. Celebrities are everywhere, social media, the news, etc., and most people are subconsciously thinking of people’s style and they just do not know it. Other people argue that the hairstylists control the trends, considering they are the ones that cut, color and style people’s hair everyday. Hair stylists are consistently adapting to the trends. You could imagine how they have to plan ahead for trends and styles so they know how much to buy of a certain color of dye. They play a role in the trends as well though when they suggest cuts, colors, and styles for some people and they go in public and other people see them and are inspired to get their haircut the same way. People everywhere are consistently aware of the different trends, cuts and colors of hair in today’s society. Whether people are aware or not, they are influenced by the styles of others - whether that be a celebrity or not.
