Saturday 4 April 2015 (update)

'Counterpoint', Jordi Forniés's new solo show opens at the Octagonal Room 12th April and will run there till 26th April

Jordi Forniés is currently in Asia for two research masters: one based on the interaction of painting and music, with the Lasalle College of the Arts (in Singapore) and Goldsmiths University of London, and another one based on the use of unconventional materials in painting with The University of Sydney.

"For Jordi Forniés, painting is an eternal field of experimentation – his studio an alchemic laboratory. Such a metaphor is no overstatement. This artist is a true researcher by nature. With a solid scientific background (a PhD in Chemistry), Fornies is concerned with evincing the eloquent potential of various materials and their combinations, trying to match the textures and layers into a visual, emotional, and spiritual orchestra. Here, each brushstroke is a self-sufficient melody while at the same time an integral part of a visual, Contrapuntal Symphony." (Oleksandra Osadcha, extract from her essay in the exhibition catalogue)

The show will be opened on April 12th by Patrick Guinness, President of the Irish Georgian Society. Works can be purchased or reserved prior to the opening.

The gallery will organise and facilitate various events and responses to the show in collaboration with other cultural contributors and practitioners of other art forms:

New office at JF Studios, 5 Cavendish Row (opening in February)

Gallery artist Jordi Forniés is based in Singapore for the next 12 months.

I will use his beautiful studio, 5 Cavendish Row, Dublin 1 as my base while he is away. I will of course continue to organise shows in various locations in town and beyond the big smoke but having a 50 square meter office in Dublin City Centre (a stone's throw away from Dublin City The ) means that you will be able to come and see works by the gallery's artists in a more private environment.

'AC3, The Timekeeper' - Xmas group show - Filmbase - Dec 7 to Dec 13

For the third time running, 'The Alchemist's Chamber' show will this year feature works evolving around the theme of Time. Bonnard once said that 'the Work of art is a suspension of time'. Artists can indeeed capture, inscribe, freeze, or paradoxically prolong (or let us -the viewer- prolong) those ‘moments in time’ whether they are depicting objects, beings, elements or emotions in transition, in movement, in transformation or transmutation. Artists can capture and master the ephemeral or the cyclical nature of things. They are the Timekeepers.

Join us in celebrating John Fitzsimons’ current solo exhibition, 'Pyramid' which opened on September 6. The exhibition will be complemented by a special performance by the artist Rachel Ní Chuinn from 7:30pm to 8pm.

Rachel Ní Chuinn works with sound, text and electronics to explore ideas of touch and movement. She has collaborated on numerous radio, music and performance projects in Dublin and Montreal and is a co-director, composer and performer with the Dublin Laptop Orchestra.

Rachel Ní Chuinn will perform two live electronic works in response to the paintings of John Fitzsimons. The first "Have a Nice Flight" uses sound samples to explore the idea of flight and aspiration. "Hum" is founded on dense harmonies and subtle variations and aims to create a meditative soundscape with an exposed electronic interface.

CD box size art collection - Yanny Petters

We have asked our gallery artists to create original works measuring 12x12cm so that they can fit in a CD box and can be sold that way. Each piece is an original work and a biography of the artist and a description of the technique can be seen at the back of the box. Each piece sells for €100.

Perfect gifts and very handy to transport for our visitors from overseas!
