Of course these books have a ver classic vibe to them, taking after LoTR and big epic quests, so I kind of knew it would be a slow start with an epic end, but Williams takes that to the extreme : This book is part two of the climax where everything is coming together. Provisional rating. Sex off camera not detailed with Simon and Miriamele. The lore in general would have been a lot more interesting, but again as is an unfortunate trope in a lot of these stories, those who have the information are killed off before they bother to tell anyone anything because for some reason withholding information at CRITICAL times in history is thought to be a good initiatory strategy for apprentices, I guess Download as PDF Printable version. I also didn't feel like there was ample reason given why Simon wasn't told this by before by all the people who knew about it. In fact it seems clear at times that Williams was worrying about the story first and the themes later, which means the tale may not resonate on as mythic a level as Tolkien's does. To green angel tower, part 2 is the second half of the final book in the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy. This is the second half of "To Green Angel Tower".

Late in ‘■"z 1977, when I was nerving up to start a fannish newzine to succeed KARASS, I found it difficult to find a title that had not been previously used. I looked through dictionaries, and the Thesaurus. I scanned Bruce Pelz’ voluminous fanzine index. I declined offers to revive titles like FANAC and STARSPINKLE. It became my contention that all the good sf story references usable as newzine titles had been taken.

  • Mormon Literature: Progress and Prospects by Eugene England
Mormon Literature: Progress and Prospects By Eugene England This essay is the culmination of several attempts England made throughout his life to assess the state of Mormon literature and letters. The version below, a slightly revised and updated version of the one that appeared in David J. Whittaker, ed., Mormon Americana: A Guide to Sources and Collections in the United States (Provo, Utah: BYU Studies, 1995), 455–505, is the one that appeared in the tribute issue Irreantum published following England’s death. Originally published in: Irreantum 3, no. 3 (Autumn 2001): 67–93. This, the single most comprehensive essay on the history and theory of Mormon literature, first appeared in 1982 and has been republished and expanded several times in keeping up with developments in Mormon letters and Eugene England’s own thinking. Anyone seriously interested in LDS literature could not do better than to use this visionary and bibliographic essay as their curriculum. 1 ExpEctations MorMonisM hAs bEEn called a “new religious tradition,” in some respects as different from traditional Christianity as the religion of Jesus was from traditional Judaism. 2 its beginnings in appearances by God, Jesus Christ, and ancient prophets to Joseph smith and in the recovery of lost scriptures and the revelation of new ones; its dramatic history of persecution, a literal exodus to a promised land, and the build - ing of an impressive “empire” in the Great basin desert—all this has combined to make Mormons in some ways an ethnic people as well as a religious community. Mormon faith is grounded in literal theophanies, concrete historical experience, and tangible artifacts (including the book of Mormon, the irrigated fields of the Wasatch Front, and the great stone pioneer temples of Utah) in certain ways that make Mormons more like ancient Jews and early Christians and Muslims than, say, baptists or Lutherans.

  • The Mutual Influence of Science Fiction and Innovation
Nesta Working Paper No. 13/07 Better Made Up: The Mutual Influence of Science fiction and Innovation Caroline Bassett Ed Steinmueller George Voss Better Made Up: The Mutual Influence of Science fiction and Innovation Caroline Bassett Ed Steinmueller George Voss Reader in Digital Media, Professor of Information and Research Fellow, Faculty of Arts, Research Centre for Material Technology, SPRU, University University of Brighton, Visiting Digital Culture, School of of Communication Sussex Fellow at SPRU, University of Media, Film and Music, Sussex University of Sussex Nesta Working Paper 13/07 March 2013 www.nesta.org.uk/wp13-07 Abstract This report examines the relationship between SF and innovation, defined as one of mutual engagement and even co-constitution. It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel.

  • You Saw the Grammys, but You Missed the More Important Awards
You Saw the Grammys, But You Missed the More Important Awards Future Frontiers Kira Peikoff February 02, 2018 The 2018 Stem Cell Action Awards, honoring recipients for advocacy, leadership, and inspiration, presented by the Regenerative Medicine Foundation. (Courtesy RMF) Last week in Miami, more than 450 researchers, physicians, lawyers, ethicists, and executives gathered from far-flung corners of the globe to share the latest updates in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Sure, a science conference might not seem as glamorous as a celebrity- filled Madison Square Garden, but it’s the place to be if you care about breakthroughs that could give you a longer and healthier life. Here are our top ten takeaways about what’s hot and what’s happening worldwide: “The places you least expect will turn up to produce some really extraordinary things.” 1) The future of stem cell treatment may involve the creation of a universal cell line that is genetically modified so every patient’s immune system will accept it. One of the leading scientists at the convention, Japanese stem cell pioneer Dr. Norio Nakatsuji, dubbed this quest a “very hot topic” right now. Being able to produce one safe cell line for everyone would be much cheaper and faster than having to create and grow patient-specific cells. “It is theoretically possible to genetically modify the lines so everyone can accept them,” said Nakatsuji. A Seattle-based biotech company aptly named Universal Cells is leading the way in this promising area. 2) Japan was the world leader in stem cell research 10 years ago, but has since fallen behind the United States for reasons that some researchers find frustrating.
