So began the teetering foundations that were to lead to where StarShipSofa is today: one of the biggest SF literature podcasts in the world. A grand statement, you might say, but nearly four years down the line that is where we are. That makes me feel rather proud. I didn’t get there by myself; StarShipSofa is a community, and we are all here because we love science fiction. StarShipSofa is made by many and put together by one. If it wasn’t Ed’s Letter for everyone – listeners, writers, and narrators – being so kind and helping out so much, I think To Mel, my amazing wife, and Elly and Reed, the good ship Sofa would have crashed into a star you are my world. I love you all so much. and burned long ago. The Sofa community has Tony/Dad made this show what it is today. And so we find ourselves celebrating N SOME ways it was thE gift OF AN StarShipSofa Audio Magazine hitting show IiPod from my wife that led to the birth of 100, and this time it’s done something quite StarShipSofa and ultimately the publication remarkable: it’s evolved from digital bits, servers, of this book. There was no more listening to radio I hope you enjoy reading it, and I’ll see you stations that bored me stupid. Podcasts were in a year’s time for Volume 2. out there, and they were playing what I wanted to hear, and this is still the case today. I have fine Tony C. For more information, see http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5325/style.50.2.0172?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents. <CT>Periodizing Samuel Beckett’s Works: A Stylochronometric Approach1 <CA>Dirk van Hulle and Mike Kestemont <AFF>UNIVERSITY OF ANTWERP <abs>ABSTRACT: We report the first analysis of Samuel Beckett’s prose writings using stylometry, or the quantitative study of writing style, focusing on grammatical function words, a linguistic category that has seldom been studied before in Beckett studies. To these function words, we apply methods from computational stylometry and model the stylistic evolution in Beckett’s oeuvre. Our analyses reveal a number of discoveries that shed new light on existing periodizations in the secondary literature, which commonly distinguish an “early,” “middle,” and “late” period in Beckett’s oeuvre. We analyze Beckett’s prose writings in both English and French, demonstrating notable symmetries and asymmetries between both languages. The analyses nuance the traditional three-part periodization as they show the possibility of stylistic relapses (disturbing the linearity of most periodizations) as well as different turning points depending on the language of the corpus, suggesting that Beckett’s English oeuvre is not identical to his French oeuvre in terms of patterns of stylistic development.

    ..................~~.~.~.. ~------------------ WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY Gamelan Gender Wayang of Bali: Form and Style by Kalafya Brown A thesis submitted to the facuIty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music May, 2000 Middletown, Connecticut My teacher, Kak Luweng, and myself playing gender (above) and just sitting (below), 2 Introduction and Acknowledgements I began studying gamelan music in 1994 while I was an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. No one tends offhand to associate gamelan with MIT. but there it is. Professor Evan Ziporyn has been directing the gong kebyar ensemble Gamelan Galak Tika at MIT since 1993, and I was an active member from 1994 until 1997. Unfortunately the pressure of my studies at Wesleyan has not allowed me to play with Galak Tika as much as I would like in the past few years. For the three years of my tenure with Galak Tika we were blessed with the artistry of the Balinese husband and wife team of I Nyoman Catra and Desak Made Suarti Laksmi. The magnificent teaching and performance prowess of Evan, Catra and Desak formed the basis of my introduction to gamelan music. In 1997 I came to Wesleyan University to study for the degree of Master of Arts in Music, of which this thesis is a part. Here at Wesleyan I have had the great honor of studying with I. M. Harjito and Sumarsam, two Javanese artists. I sincerely thank them for broadening my awareness of the multifaceted natures of Indonesian music and for sharing with me the great beauty of the central Javanese court gamelan.

JOHNSONJOHNSON August 2009 n my student days, I was the victim of a burglary; although, given the area of Sheffield in which my tiny one-bedroom flat was situated, I was probably lucky to only experience this on one occasion (Seriously, just Google “axe attack Sheffield” and you will be able to see my old neighbourhood in all its glory!). I Being the victim of such a crime is a terrible thing. It becomes impossible to relax in your own home, and the sense of anger and anxiety which follow are something which can seriously play on your mind for months to follow. You may then think it is strange that I spent a year of my life writing the biography of a famous Sheffield burglar, exploring his antics and dragging his cowardly crimes back into the limelight after a century of almost obscurity. The rogue in question was Charles Frederick Peace, a master of cat burglary and cunning disguise, and a man whose life was entirely deserving of being immortalised.
