Expedition des Forschungsunternehmens Nepal Himalaya in den Khumbu Himal Heinz JANETSCHEK A Zoologist on the Roof of the World Faunistic-ecologic-biocenotic results of the 2nd expedition of the Research Schema Nepal Himalaya in the Khumbu Himal Summary: 1. Faunistic-ecologic and biocenotic results obtained by Heinz JANETSCHEK, Innsbruck, during the 2nd Expedition of the Research Scheme Nepal Himalaya are summarized. 2. Collections were made expecially on the soil fauna. Those of shrubs and trees were neglected. Collecting sites were at altitudes ranging from 700 to more than 6000 m. Collections were partly made during the march from Banepa/Kathmandu into the Khumbu area, but expecially in the area of the glaciated mountains Amai Dablang (6856 m) and Taboche (6542 m), from 11.4. to 23.6.1961, with a stay of 5 weeks in the working area proper over 3900 m (30. April to 6. June). In this area only the premonsoon-aspect was recorded. The return began with the inset of the monsoon. 3. The physiographic elements of the investigation area are briefly described: vegetation and climate, soils, pleistocenic conditions. 4. Collecting methods were: Reitter-sievings of förna, by ocular sorting (sometimes by washing), automatic sieving of soil probes (paper-Berlese-funnels), pitfalltraps (without baits, with formalin), ocular sampling with small brush, tweezers, sucker and catcher, trapping using light with petromax as light source. No malaise-traps. 5. Results of determination work of collected materials by many specialists all over the world appear in about 45 publications (see references part I). Many groups remained undetermined. Published and not yet published de- termination-results are summarized in two groups of tables: "Midlands" (Tab. 1-9) and "Highlands" (above 3900 m, Tab. 10-17). These tables form the nucleus of the present paper. 6. Separated into soil dwellers and water forms specialities of some groups are communicated as f. i. Zoogeo- graphie data, discovery of terrestric Planaria (in 3900 m a. s. 1.), and of Schistosomatidae (endoparasitic Tremato- des) from the coelomic fluid of Megascolecidae, defense-strategies of Megascolecidae and certain ants. 8. Mainly using arthropods as examples the following aspects are dealt with (and tabulated) in more detail: ecologic-zoogeographic changes of the faunae of the forest life zones and arable land up into the cryptogames life zone, biocenotic statements in the zones of cushion-like plants and cryptogames, in the "Vorfeld" of the Nare Gla- cier south of the Amai Dablang, and a very short summary of the Zoogeographie situation. In these ecologie chap- ters indetermined/open named material is also being considered. Uppermost vertical records of important taxa in the investigation area are compared with statements in the literature. Based on the author's southpolar experiences extrapolations into not yet investigated altitudes of the Himalaya are made. 9. In Bangladesh, very few contributions are available on the taxonomic study on these arachnids. The present paper contains an updated checklist of the spider fauna of Bangladesh based on the published records of different workers and the identified collections of the recent studies by the author. It includes a total of 334 species of spiders belong to the infraorders Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae under 21 families and 100 genera. A brief diagnosis of different families and their domination together with the distribution throughout the country are provided herewith. Key words: Checklist, spiders, Araneae, Arachnida, Bangladesh INTRODUCTION Bangladesh is basically a riverine agricultural country. It lies between 20.35ºN and 26.75ºN latitude and 88.03ºE and 92.75ºE longitude, covering an area of 1,47,570 sq. km (55,126 sq. miles). The country as such offers varied climatic situations viz., temperature, rainfall, humidity, fogmist, dew and Haor- frost, winds etc. (Rashid 1977). With the vast agricultural lands, also there are different kinds of evergreen, deciduous and mangrove forests staying different areas of the country viz., the southern Sunderbans, northern Bhawal and Madhupur forests and eastern Chittagong and Chittagong Hill-Tracts forest. Along with the agricultural lands, each of the forest ecosystems is composed of numerous species of spider fauna of the country.

The genus Merosargus (Loew) has 142 described species. This great diversity in the genus could be explained by larvae resource-use specialization. However, information on larval habitats is still very scarce. In Merosargus species, adult males defend oviposition sites, and this territorial behavior may lead to interspecific competition and make even more important the specialization and niche partitioning to prevent competitive exclusion. This study identified substrate types used as a resource by Merosargus larvae and investigated the degree of specialization and overlap in resource use by different species at an Atlantic forest remnant in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

ABSTRAKT Pavoukovci jsou ekologicky velmi různorodou skupinou, obývají téměř všechny biotopy a často jsou specializovaní na specifický biotop nebo dokonce mikrobiotop. Mezi specifické biotopy patří také kmeny a dutiny stromů, ptačí budky a biotopy ovlivněné hnízděním kormoránů. Ve své dizertační práci jsem se zabýval ekologií společenstev pavouků a sekáčů na těchto specifických biotopech. V první studii jsme se zabývali společenstvy pavouků a sekáčů na kmenech stromů na dvou odlišných biotopech, v lužním lese a v městské zeleni. Zabývali jsme se také jednotlivými společenstvy na kmenech různých druhů stromů a srovnáním tří jednoduchých sběrných metod – upravené padací pasti, lepového a kartonového pásu. Ve druhé studii jsme se zabývali arachnofaunou dutin starých dubů za pomocí dvou sběrných metod (padací past v dutině a nárazová past u otvoru dutiny) na stromech v lužním lese a solitérních stromech na loukách a také srovnáním společenstev v dutinách na živých a odumřelých stromech. Ve třetí studii jsme se zabývali společenstvem pavouků zimujících v ptačích budkách v nížinném lužním lese a vlivem vybraných faktorů prostředí na jejich početnosti. Zabývali jsme se také znovuosídlováním ptačích budek pavouky v průběhu zimy v závislosti na teplotě a vlivem hnízdního materiálu v budce na početnosti a druhové spektrum pavouků.
