Italiana de nascimento e formação acadêmica e profissional, fluente em mandarim e ex-funcionária da biblioteca do Vaticano, a autora é uma especialista sobre o tema, com base em informações privilegiadas. Depois de realizar um estudo na Itália sobre as relações do Império do Centro com a Santa Sé e com o catolicismo dentro da China até 1949, ela se dedicou em seu doutorado à reflexão sobre o período atual. As complexas e contraditórias relações entre a China imperial e uma religião ocidental, com um centro político-administrativo localizado na Europa, professada por sacerdotes que chegavam acompanhando o colonialismo, se tornaram mais complicadas com o estabelecimento de um regime socialista em Beijing. Anna Carletti consegue desmistificar o discurso muitas vezes duro das duas partes e identificar os significados semânticos ocultos, mostrando outros níveis de contradição. O Império de cinco milênios e a religião uni- versal de dois mil anos demonstram uma imensa capacidade de adaptação, que atualmente atinge notável nível de complexidade, num diálogo que persiste mesmo em meio a crises e ameaças. Demonstra que, muitas vezes, é o interesse de determinados grupos, de um lado e de outro, que produzem impasses. No final, ela demonstra que a obtenção de uma acomodação, desde que respeitado o interesse nacional chinês, está objetivamente ao alcance dos atores. Iniciado em 1978 foi caracterizado por mudanças mundiais e se diferenciou pelas inúmeras viagens realizadas por João Paulo II. Ao se encerrar, no balanço destas visi- tas internacionais apareciam apenas duas viagens não realizadas: a visita à Rússia e à China. Estes foram os países que João Paulo II desde o início do seu pontificado quis visitar, mas não conseguiu. O empecilho à viagem em terra russa foi posto pela própria Igreja Ortodoxa e não pelo governo, cujos representantes várias vezes visitaram o Papa no Vaticano. A segunda viagem que não se realizou foi à China. Esta visita sempre foi almejada pelo Papa João Paulo II, sobretudo em vista do desejo de retomar as relações diplomáticas com a República Popular da China, interrompidas em 1951. Ao contrário do caso russo, esta visita foi vetada pelo governo chinês por várias razões, a mais evidente é a não aceitação de ingerências de um chefe estrangeiro nos assuntos internos da China. A ausência de relações diplomáticas com a República Popular da China foi uma das questões que permaneceram irresolutas e que Bento XVI, mesmo não a nomeando explicitamente, a ela se referiu já no início do seu pontificado: Penso também nas nações com as quais a Santa Sé ainda não estabeleceu relações diplomáticas. Algumas delas uniram-se às celebrações por ocasião da morte do meu Predecessor e da minha eleição à Sede de Pedro. Tendo apreciado estes gestos, desejo hoje lhes expressar a minha gratidão e dirigir uma deferente saudação às autoridades civis desses países, formulando o desejo de os verem, o mais depressa possível, representados junto à Santa Sé Apostólica. Esses países, sobretudo aqueles em que as comunidades católicas são numerosas, enviaram mensagens que eu apreciei de modo particular. Desejo manifestar o quanto me são queridas essas comunidades e todos os povos aos quais elas pertencem, garantindo a todos que me recordo delas na minha oração.1 E, continuando, afirmou que a Santa Sé 1 BENTO XVI. No concerto das nações, ela deseja favorecer sempre o entendimento entre os povos e a cooperação fundada numa atitude de lealdade, discrição e cordialidade.2 Atualmente a Santa Sé, situada no Estado da Cidade do Vaticano, mantém relações diplomáticas com 174 países. Ela mantém uma relação de natureza especial com a Federação Russa e com a Organização para a Liberação da Palestina (OLP). Dentro dos 174 países encontra-se a República da China (Taiwan), com a qual a Santa Sé estreitou suas relações diplomáticas logo depois da instauração do Partido Comunista da China no poder, quando as relações com a República Popular da China (RPC) ficaram tão difíceis que se chegou à ruptura, em 1951.

The Constitution of 1982 (Article 36) and Document No. 19 of the same year have codified Deng Xiaoping's religious policy. Since then the policy has remained the same: The Party controls religions and the Church; religions must accommodate to the goals of the Communist Party. In other words, religion is tolerated as long as it serves Party policy, which currently is the modernization of the country. Recently, the viewpoints of two Mainland scholars, Pan Yue and Li Pingye have raised hope that there might be some development in the religious policy. I am less optimistic. I do not find Pan Yue and Li Pingye's suggestions really new or positive. Pan Yue suggests that the Party should go beyond condemning religion as "the opium of people".

    ABSTRACT Multiple Modernizations, Religious Regulations and Church Responses: The Rise and Fall of Three “Jerusalems” in Communist China Zhifeng Zhong, Ph.D. Mentor: William A. Mitchell, Ph.D. There is an extensive literature on modernization, regulation and religious change from a global perspective. However, China is usually understudied by the scholars. Numerous studies tackle the puzzle of the rising of Christianity and its implications in China. However they fail to synthesize the multiple dynamics and diverse regional difference. This dissertation approaches the development of Christianity in contemporary China from a regional perspective. By doing a case study on twelve churches in three prefecture cities (Guangzhou, Wenzhou and Nanyang), I examine how different historical processes and factors interacted to shape the uneven development of Christianity under the communist rule. The main research questions are: How did Protestantism survive, transform and flourish under a resilient communism regime? What factors account for the regional variance of the transformation of Christianity? I argue that there are multiple modernizations in China, and they created various cultural frames in the regions. Although the party-state tried to eliminate religion, Protestantism not only survived, but transformed and revived in the Cultural Revolution, which laid the foundation for momentum growth in the reform era. The development of Protestantism in China is dynamic, path-dependent, and contingent on specific settings. Different modernizations, religious regulation, historical legacy and church responses led to the rise and fall of three “Jerusalems” in communist China. The division in the Roman world can be marked by the construction of the New Rome of Constantine the Great in Byzantia. La Congregazione per l’evangelizzazione dei popoli, cui è stata affidata – insieme con le Pontificie Opere Missionarie – la responsabilità di promuovere e coordinare in tutto il mondo la celebrazione del MMS, ha intrapreso diverse ini - ziative; per nominarne solo alcune: una guida 2, un sito web 3, convegni teologici in tutto il mondo 4 e numerose iniziative a Roma per tutto il mese missionario. L’opera di evangelizzazione non ha un metodo predefinito: è dinamica, sempre nuova e al tempo stesso potrebbe sembrare “strana”.
