Translator'sl?rcfacc This project, which began with the desire to render into English a rather long tale by Bimal Kar about five years ago, eventually grew into a considerably more extended compilation of Bengali short stories by ten of the most well known practitioners of that art since the heyday of Rabindranath Tagore. The collection is limited in many ways, not the least of which being that no woman writer has been included, and that it contains only a baker's dozen stories (if we count Bonophool's micro-stories collectively as one )-a number pitifully small considering the vast and prolific field of authors and stories a translator has at his or her disposal.

  • Family, School and Nation
Family, School and Nation This book recovers the voice of child protagonists across children’s and adult literature in Bengali. It scans literary representations of aberrant child- hood as mediated by the institutions of family and school and the project of nation-building in India in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The author discusses ideals of childhood demeanour; locates dissident children who legitimately champion, demand and fight for their rights; examines the child protagonist’s confrontations with parents at home, with teachers at school and their running away from home and school; and inves- tigates the child protagonist’s involvement in social and national causes. Using a comparative framework, the work effectively showcases the child’s growing refusal to comply as a legacy and an innovative departure from analogous portrayals in English literature. It further reviews how such childhood rebellion gets contained and re-assimilated within a predomi- nantly cautious, middle-class, adult worldview. This book will deeply interest researchers and scholars of literature, espe- cially Bengali literature of the renaissance, modern Indian history, cultural studies and sociology. • A Comparative Study of Enid Blyton's the Famous Five and Sasthipada Chattopadhyay's Pandab Goenda
NEW LITERARIA An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities Volume 1, No. 1, Aug-Sept 2020, PP 65-71 www.newliteraria.com Adolescent Spirit of Adventurism and Inquisitiveness: A Comparative Study of Enid Blyton's The Famous Five and Sasthipada Chattopadhyay's Pandab Goenda Ajay Kumar Gangopadhyay Abstract When a child passes through exposure and experience to the stage of adolescence, she or he is chiefly guided in young imagination by the spirit of adventurism and inquisitiveness. It is both a release from the drab routine life of school and bullying of the elders at home and society, and a way of exerting the new-found ecstasies of life. The virginity of mind searches most eagerly and passionately for the truth, and innocent sense of boldness is ever hungry to unravel the seeming mysteries of life. This paper proposes to make a comparative study of the British writer Enid Blyton and the Bengali writer Shasthipada Chattopadhyay who, despite gaps of place, time and gender, have exploited this spirit most successfully in their respective efforts to tell detective stories involving young boys and girls. In the process, the paper intends to draw attention to an interesting facet of pop-lit, a cult that has already become a part of mainstream literary culture. Keywords: Childhood and Adolescence, Adventurism and Inquisitiveness, Detective Stories, Comics, Graphic Romance In Chapter II of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as A Youngman, we find an exciting aspect of adolescent awakening. Joyce writes of his young hero Stephen Dedalus newly shifted to Blackrock with his family: 'He became the ally of a boy named Aubrey Mills and founded with him a gang of adventurers in the avenue.

The International Journal Of Humanities & Social Studies (ISSN 2321 - 9203) www.theijhss.com THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES & SOCIAL STUDIES Women in Bengali Detective Fiction Rajarshi Mukherjee Assistant Professor, Department of English, Shyampur Siddheswari Mahavidyalaya, Howrah, West Bengal, India Abstract: The golden age of English detective fiction encouraged latter-day adaptations in Bengal. Bengali detective fiction not only became experimental but it also developed into a highly acclaimed genre with astonishing popularity. However, as against its English counterpart, women figure much less in every aspect; be it authorship or readership or even characters. This exclusion or limited presence is being analyzed in this paper. Keywords: Holmes, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Nancy Drew, Byomkesh Bakshi, Satyajit Ray 1. Introduction 31 st January 1941 records one of the most heretical moments in the annals of crime- fiction. Rex Stout, invited as an honoured guest addressed a group of Holmesian devotees and scholars at a meeting of the New York chapter of the Baker street irregulars. His speech carried the title “Watson was a woman”, and Stout claimed that the good doctor was, on his /her own textual evidence, a member of what then was still being dismissively referred to as the ‘weaker sex’. The imagination of some may be ignited by what may be termed as a cleaver spoof of Sherlockian studies but to the faithful it was nothing short of an outrage to consider Watson’s strong sentiments translated as sentimentality, his manly self sufficiency read as domesticity and his loyal companionship interpreted as wifely fidelity. I bring this analogy since Bengali detective fiction has its genesis in the last decade of the 19 th century with Priyanath Mukhopadhya’s “Darogar Daptar” which was first published in 1893, exactly two years after Conan Doyle started publishing the Sherlock Holmes stories in the Strand Magazine in 1891.

  • Chapters. A. the History Of
The History of Detective Fiction in India and Abroad US CHAPTERS. A. THE HISTORY OF DETECTIVE FICTION IN INDIA AND ABROAD: ITS MODIFICATION BY ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE AND SARADINDU BANDYOPADHYAY: - As far as the history of the emanation of detective fiction is concerned, there are contradictory opinions. Literary historians, as Ousby points out, have traced it to the Bible (Daniel, Susanna and the elders) and to the puzzle tales of the Enlightenment like Voltaire's Zadic (1747) where the protagonist, following the method of logical deduction, describes the physical appearance of a horse and a dog he has never seen (The Wordsworth 253).
