When I see the living, breathing portraits of these characters, especially the early archival footage... To see them intelligent and smart – they were a kind of blessing considering how they have been caricatured in later times. I like what this film explores and I’m glad to be a part of it. Robert Redford “This film is stunning and literally left me speechless. It is so powerful on so many levels, whether personal, political, spiritual or ultimately facing death. It is an amazing piece of work. Thank you so much for doing it. You will make history with it.” Ambassador Joe Wilson “A great piece of work and an extraordinary story well told.” Sting “The film left me open. It’s a historic document chronicling two majestic lives.” Jeff Bridges “It is highly entertaining and enlightening on all levels. The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash
SPOOFS The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash In the 1970s, Eric Idle, a former member of the legendary British com- edy team Monty Python, featured a Beatles parody song called “It Must Be Love” on Rutland Weekend Television, his own television show on BBC-2. The song had been written by Neil Innes, who had previously worked with Monty Python and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The song was performed by ‘The Rutles’, a Beatles look-alike band featuring Neil Innes as the John Lennon character, and Eric Idle as the Paul McCartney character (vgl. Harry 1985: 69). In October 1976, the parody was shown on America’s NBC TV’s show Saturday Night Live as a se- quel to the running gag of a Beatles reunion for $3,000. The parody went down so well that Eric Idle and Neil Innes decided to produce a feature program about The Rutles for television. Idle, who was a close friend of George Harrison, was allowed to watch Neil Aspinall’s unreleased do- cumentary about The Beatles, called The Long and Winding Road. Aspi- nall’s film featured a bulk of famous footage of The Beatles, from their first televised performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last group performance on the roof of their Apple business building. Idle u- sed The Long and Winding Road as a model for his fake-documentary about The Rutles and basically re-told the history of The Beatles pro- jected upon this imaginary rock band, adding essential elements of par- ody and the Pythonesque sense of surreal humor. -

“Between the Creeks” Gwen Pettit This is a compilation of weekly newspaper columns on local history written by Gwen Pettit during 1986-1992 for the Allen Leader and the Allen American in Allen, Texas. Most of these articles were initially written and published, then run again later with changes and additions made. I compiled these articles from the Allen American on microfilm at the Allen Public Library and from the Allen Leader newspapers provided by Mike Williams. Then, I typed them into the computer and indexed them in 2006-07. Lois Curtis and then Rick Mann, Managing Editor of the Allen American gave permission for them to be reprinted on April 30, 2007, [email protected]. Please, contact me to obtain a free copy on a CD. I have given a copy of this to the Allen Public Library, the Harrington Library in Plano, the McKinney Library, the Allen Independent School District and the Lovejoy School District. Tom Keener of the Allen Heritage Guild has better copies of all these photographs and is currently working on an Allen history book. Keener offices at the Allen Public Library. Gwen was a longtime Allen resident with an avid interest in this area’s history. Some of her sources were: Pioneering in North Texas by Capt. Roy and Helen Hall, The History of Collin County by Stambaugh & Stambaugh, The Brown Papers by George Pearis Brown, The Peters Colony of Texas by Seymour V. The Effect of the Beatles on Society
The Effect of the Beatles on Society Written by: Larry Coffey Date: 26 March 1981 The Effect of the Beatles on Society In June of 1956, John Lennon met Paul McCartney for the first time. Nobody ever dreamed that John and Paul would have the success that they had. John Lennon and Paul McCartney along with George Harrison and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr) became known as the greatest and the most influential rock musicians in the world. The Beatles, whose music has been played by prestigious symphonies around the world and has been sung by renowned singers such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, were a vibrant moving force of the 1960’s; they permanently changed the course of music and soundly influenced the lives of future generations. To get an idea of how much the Beatles helped shape the following generations’ lifestyles, one must look at the lifestyle and the music before the Beatles. The music the Beatles played, “Rock and Roll,” had already established itself as a popular form of music to American teenagers. Derived from the black’s “Rhythm and Blues,” rock and roll was made popular by performers such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Bill Haley. Though rock and roll had been around for about ten years before the Beatles became famous, it was still a relatively new form of music that had plenty of potential. The Beatles were elevated from obscurity by utilizing the music’s potential. The lifestyle of the fifties was slowly changing. The American public was beginning to accept the possibility of a “working class hero”. -

Running Head: EXPERIENCES of MENTALLY RETARDED PARENTS
Parents with Mental Retardation 1 Running head: EXPERIENCES OF PARENTS WITH MENTAL RETARDATION Experiential Accounts of the Challenges of Parents with Mental Retardation Alexis Palfreyman and Rachel Weisenbach Hanover College Parents with Mental Retardation 2 Abstract Historically, there have been significant social concerns about the parenting abilities of individuals with mental retardation (MR) and for the well-being of their children. Past research has identified specific observable behaviors with which parents with MR struggle, and these findings have subsequently influenced the development of parent training programs for this population. The current study aims to expand on previous research by exploring the subjective experiences of parents with MR. Open-ended interviews were conducted which focused on the personal experiences of parents with MR in regard to the challenges and needs they faced as parents. Nine participants were recruited through Noble of Indiana, the Indianapolis branch of the Arc, which provides service and support for persons with MR and their families. These interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed. Using the Interpretative Phenomenological Approach, six clusters and 20 themes were identified. We focused on the clusters of Difficulties, Sources of Help, and Social Judgment as well as themes of Parent-Child Interaction, Parenting Programs, and Influence. Through comparing the subjective data obtained in this study with previous research, we are able to contribute to a more holistic understanding of the experiences of parents with MR. We are also able to make suggestions which may aid in the development of parent training programs, encourage the integration of support services, and help to decrease stigmatization and social judgment. -
