Welcome to the Dragon Bay Legends Championships. InsideOut Sports & Entertainment is once again pleased to present a phenomenal cast of tennis legends to the Cayman Islands and the beautiful Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

A remarkable playing fi eld including three former world No. 1s with a combined 12 Grand Slam titles is led by Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier and Marat Safi n. They will be joined by former world No. 5 Jimmy Arias, Davis Cup champion Aaron Krickstein and Grand Slam fi nalist Mikael Pernfors.

These tennis greats will be battling in a single-elimination shootout in their quest for the title and $120,000 in prize money.

DRAGON BAY, CREATING A LIFETIME OF MEMORIESIES YEAR BY YEAR.

In Grand Cayman this year, Courier will be looking for the Grand Cayman hat-trick after winning the previous two editions of the event in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, he defeated Wayne Ferreira in the championship match 7-6, (3), 7-6 (1), earning him his fi rst victory on the Champions Series circuit in over a year. “It was a very physical match,” said Courier of his win over Ferreira in 2008, played in windy conditions. “It was a diffi cult match physically and the emotions of the fi nals also weigh on you.”

In 2009, he repeated as Grand Cayman champion defeating Arias, the unexpected ﬁ nalist, 6-4, 6-2. “I started the match tight and Jimmy was playing aggressively,” said Courier after winning in 2009. “It was a battle. Once I turned it on, got some conﬁ dence and started playing aggressively, things went in my favor.”

Arias has played some of his best tennis on the Champions Series circuit in Grand Cayman - posting his best two circuit results at The Residences at The Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman. In 2008, he posted a third-place fi nish in the event, beating Paul Haarhuis 7-6 (3), 2-6, 10-8 (Champions Tie- Break) in the third-place match while registering a monumental upset of John McEnroe in round-robin play. The 7-5, 6-2 win for Arias over McEnroe was the fi rst time he had beaten the brash New Yorker in any type of tennis competition and is considered the biggest upset in the history of the Champions Series circuit. Famous for his emotional outbursts and sometimes fiery temper on court, Safin was one of the most colorful players on the tour. He is the older brother of WTA player Dinara Safina and they are the first brother-sister tandem in tennis history to both achieve No.1 rankings. He helped lead the Russian Davis Cup team to their first victory in 2002 and again in 2006. Despite his dislike of grass courts, he became the first Russian man to reach the semifinals of Wimbledon at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships. 17 career titles: 15 in singles, 2 in doubles. MIKAEL PERNFORS Pernfors is one of two players in the history of NCAA tennis to win back-to-back singles championships. The titles came in 1984 and ‘85 and in that second year he led his Georgia squad to the team championship as well.

Edberg ﬁ rst came to the tennis world’s attention as a junior player. He won all four Grand Slams junior titles in 1982 to become the ﬁ rst ever player to achieve the ‘Junior Grand Slam’. Krickstein was one of the most highly decorated junior champions in the history of U.S. tennis. He parlayed his amazing junior career into a remarkable pro career highlighted by ﬁ ve years in the world’s Top 10 over the course of his 13 years on Tour. He is best known for being one of the most tenacious players ever, winning 28 times in ﬁ ve-set matches (11 times from two sets down). He still holds two records on the ATP Tour: He is the youngest player to win on Tour at age 16 and the youngest to reach the world top 10...at age 17.
