I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public ii Abstract This thesis explores the importance of political conservatism in shaping the ideological and political foundations of British imperialism in India between 1857 and 1914. From the Indian Revolt to the rise of Indian nationalism, it examines how British and Indian conservatives attempted to define a conceptual and institutional framework of empire which politically opposed liberal imperialism to the First World War. It relies upon a biographical analysis to examine how intellectual configurations defined distinct political positions on Indian empire. This study reveals the extent that local conservative inclination and action, through political actors such as Lord Ellenborough, Benjamin Disraeli, Lord Mayo, Lord Lytton, the Kathiawar States, Roper Lethbridge, and M.M. Bhownaggree, shaped public and partisan discourse on empire. It argues that British and Indian conservatives evoked shared principles centered in locality, prescription, and imagination to challenge, mollify, and supplant the universal and centralizing ambitions of liberal imperialists and nationalists with the employment of pre-modern ideas and institutions. It is argued that this response to liberalism conditioned their shared contribution and collaboration towards an imperial framework predicated principally upon respecting and supporting local autonomy and traditional authority in a hierarchical and divided India.

Taking a closer look at the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the authors explore the political tensions, social dynamics and economic forces thal contributed to making the state what it is today, the impact of the British policies; the process of industrialization and urbanization^ and the rise of the middle class; the emergence of the idea of '5wadeshi“; the coming £ G and hr and his attempts to transform society and politics by bringing together diverse Gujarati cultural sources; and the series of communal riots that rocked Gujarat even as the state was consumed by nationalist fervour. The dissertation is an attempt at redressing this gap, as well as at developing an understanding of the role of literary culture in the making of local polities in pre-modern South Asia. The dissertation explores the relationship between literary texts and political power. It specifically focuses on the fifteenth century, which coincides with the rise of the regional sultanate, which, along with the sultanates of Malwa, Deccan, and the kingdoms of Mewad and Marwar, emerged as an important power in the politics of South Asia in this period.

After Dayaram, a new age of Gujarati literature and language began, influenced by Western education and thinking. The three chapters of Part I of the thesis look at the ways of approaching North Indian devotional literature which have informed all subsequent readings of Dayaram in the hundred and fifty years since his death. Chapter 1 is concerned with the treatment by Indologists of the Krsnaite literature in Braj Bhasa, which forms a significant part of Dayaram's literary antecedents.

Timby Associate Professor of the History of Religions Princeton Theological Seminary Preface To begin these lectures, which I call "Enabling Encounters," and to fit a framework around them, allow me to cite some lines from the preface of a recent book by the American writer Anne FADIMAN, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down (1997). The subtitle describes it as being about A Hmong Child (that is, of refugee parents from Laos), Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures . The child referred to, Lia, suffers from epilepsy. A tragic figure, Lia finds herself trapped on the edges between two contrastive etiologies of illness, one being that of her Hmong parents, who understand her condition in terms of spirit possession, and the other being that of her doctors in the California hospital who treat her. Though the doctors, as one would expect, diagnose the problem in neurological terms, it is a diagnosis that makes no cultural sense to Lia's parents. While the book itself is enormously illuminating, the author's reasons for writing it intrigue me just as much: I have always felt that the action most worth watching is not at the center of things but where the edges meet. I like shorelines, weather fronts, and international borders. There are interesting frictions and incongruities in these places, and often, if you stand at the point of tangency, you can see both sides better than if you were in the middle of either one.

SHUKLA VANSHREE RESEARCH SCHOLAR Abstract: Frequently titled as Bhakti literature is the devotional literature we find in regional languages of India. As it is more social and cultural, the poets from Bhakti Panth appear more as philosophers and social rather than literary figures. The translation of classics gives sense of belonging especially when a native language gets translated in English. The classics get presented before the world. What Hsuan-tsang did for Sanskrit scriptures, in modern age Shri Aurobindo, Dilip Chitre and A. K. Ramanujan also did in Post Colonial literature which has a heavy flow of translation and Bhakti literature is one of them. This paper discusses about Narsinh Mehta’s devotional poems which are relevant even in 21st century. Keywords: Bhakti poets and their literature, Idea of allegiance and salvation, Rustic spirit. Introduction: Often titled as Bhakti literature is the devotional literature we find in regional languages of India. At times this literature was written by Brahmins yet far away from the conventional Sanskrit hymns focusing upon God only. It takes into account the whole Indian society, all castes and creeds. Narsinh Mehta by birth a Nagar Brahmin spread a message of equality in the society when Brahmins were so much alert about their high breed and had pride for the untouchability of others.
