Ewa Dabkowska This dissertation is devoted to the history of Polish mathematics education and specifically to the development of Polish mathematics education periodicals. This research investigates all mathematics education periodicals that were published from 1930 to 1950, which was a turbulent time for Poland due to World War II as well as foreign influences. The purpose of this study was to research the status and position of Polish mathematics education periodicals and their changes over the years. In an attempt to accomplish this purpose, the study investigated the objectives, content, and most important topics of periodicals, the reasons for the changes in them, and also explored who were the most prominent and influential authors of the periodicals during the period of 1930-1950. The study examined the articles of the periodicals and categorized them based on similar content, such as teaching methods, teaching aids, instructional practices, curriculum, school mathematics, textbook reviews, and foreign influences. The study also provided brief summaries of several of the articles. Mathematics education periodicals represent one important side of the professional communication in the field which provides insight into the development of mathematics education, which in turn was an important part of the country’s cultural life. This study attempts to be of help for a general study that would portray how Polish history of mathematics education fits into and relates to the collective history of Europe. In particular, how it fits into the collective history of other European countries that underwent similar dramatic influences from abroad. The analysis has shown that Poland’s history of education and Polish mathematics periodicals, in particular, was substantially influenced by internal or external politics and ideologies. Analysis of the periodicals provides a unique opportunity to examine the communication between mathematics educators and, therefore, everyday life in the field and to see who were the most influential figures and what socio-political factors may have influenced those figures into making changes in mathematics education. It should be mentioned that since all of the figures studied in the dissertation were educated during a period in Poland when the country was partitioned, they were influenced by different foreign systems of education, which ultimately had an impact on the formation of the Polish mathematics education system. In general, the study has shown that Polish mathematics education and Polish mathematics education periodicals were all heavily influenced by the social and political changes in Poland, such as new policies, legislation, ideology, as well as foreign influences from countries such as Germany, Austria, and Russia. These factors worked collectively to shape Polish mathematics education into what it was during 1930-1950. Sang Hyub Kim (’18) recently completed a two-week exchange in Poland at the Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie (Jagiellonian University in Kraków). Founded in 1364 by Kazimierz III Wielki (Casimir III the Great), Jagiellonian University is the oldest university in Poland. Halina M. Semla-Pulaski, MS, DPM (’89), a Trustee of the NYCPM, organized this exchange program. Dr. Semla-Pulaski developed contacts with the faculties through her mentor and friend, Jolanta Jaworek, MD, PhD. Dr. Jaworek was a former Dean of the Wydział Nauk o Zdrowiu (Department of Health and Sciences) and holds the highest title and distinction of “Profes- sor” in the Polish academia. Kim spent his first week in the Oddział Kliniczny Ortopedii i Rehabilitacji (Clinical Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation) of the University Hospital, shadowing orthopedic surgeons – Artur Gądek, MD, (Professor of Jagiellonian University), a hip and knee specialist and Henryk Liszka, MD, a foot and ankle specialist. Under the supervision of Dr. Liszka, Kim was allowed to scrub into several forefoot surgeries such as arthroplasty, percutaneous scarf and the Akin procedure. Moreover, Kim observed complicated cases including triple arthrodesis, clubfoot reconstruction, ankle arthroscopy and osteochondral lesion resection. In the second week, Kim visited few rehabilitation and physical therapy centers outside of the main cam- pus involved in the Institute of Physiotherapy at Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum.

    Krakow HISTORY The first documented reference to Krakow can be found in records from 965 of the Cordova merchant Abraham ben Jacob. He mentions a rich burg city situated at the crossing of trade routes and surrounded by woods. In the 10th century Mieszko I incorporated Krakow into the Polish state. During the times of Boleslaw the Brave, the bishopric of Krakow was established (1000) and the construction of Wawel Cathedral began. In 1038, Casimir I the Restorer made Wawel Castle its seat, thus making Krakow the capital of Poland. The high duke Boleslav V the Chaste following the example of Wrocław, introduced city rights modelled on the Magdeburg law allowing for tax benefits and new trade privileges for the citizens in 1257. Due to the first partition of Poland in 1772, the southern part of Little Poland was seized by the Austrian army. On March 24, 1794 Kościuszko's Insurrection began in Krakow. Temporarily included into the Warsaw Duchy, it was given the status of a "free city" after Napoleon's downfall. After the defeat of the November Insurrection (1831), Krakow preserved its autonomy as the only intact part of Poland. In 1846, it was absorbed into the Austrian Monarchy again. After independence was regained in 1918, Krakow became a significant administrative and cultural center.

In the period 1918-1939 mathematics in Poland was led by a few people aiming at clearly defined but somewhat different goals. They were: S. Zaremba in Cracow, W. Sierpiński and S. Mazurkiewicz in Warsaw, and H. Steinhaus and S. Banach in Lvov. All were chairmen and editors of mathematical journals, and each promoted several students to continue their efforts. They were highly successful both locally and internationally. When Poland regained its independence in 1918, Polish mathematics exploded like a supernova: against a dark background there flared up, in the next two deca- des, the Polish Mathematical School. Although the School has not embraced all mathematics in the country, it soon attracted common attention for the whole. Ho- wever, after two decades of a vivid development the School ended suddenly also like a supernova and together with it there silenced, for the time being, the rest of Polish mathematics. The end came in 1939 when the state collapsed under German and Soviet blows from the West and from the East, and the two occupants cooperated to cut short Polish independent life. After 1945 the state and mathematics came to life again but it was a different state and a different mathematics. The aim of this paper is to recall great leaders of the short-lived interwar Polish mathematics. By a leader we mean here a man enjoying an international reputation (author of influential papers or monographs) and possessing a high position in the country (chairman of a department of mathematics in one of the universities), a man who had a number of students and promoted several of them to Ph.D.
