From the opening horn riff that kicks off ―Wow Oui Ole,‖ the first on Luther Badman Keith‘s new recording ―Bluesmen Are Kings,‖ it is quickly apparent that the CD offers a new sound from the Detroit blues musician. ―Wow Oui Ole,‖ a jump blues tune inspired by Louis Jordan, is one of several on the 13-song CD that represent a variety of musical styles, featuring horns and keyboards as well as Keith‘s vocals and electric lead . ―The biggest thing with this CD, which is my fourth one, is that it shows my evolution as a musician, and represents the growth from when I started in 1998 until now,‖ Keith says. ―It‘s taken time. I couldn‘t have produced a CD like this the first three or four years out. I needed time to grow as a musician and a .‖ According to Keith, the biggest influence on the recording is that he worked with a producer for the first time. It was recorded at Josh Ford‘s The Sound Shop studio in Macomb. Ford, who performs as Motor City Josh, worked with Keith on the arrangements. Advertisement ―He is a tremendous producer,‖ says Keith, who wrote all the on the . ―He took the songs I wrote and helped bring out the best arrangements and refined my ideas. ―I can‘t say enough about Josh Ford. Because he is a musician, he hears things well and is open to new ideas. If something is not working, he will tell you. And he is willing to take chances and be a little adventurous.‖ The music features horns by Billy Furman and Mark Croft — members of Keith‘s band, who also did the horn arrange- ments — keyboardist Jim David, and the studio rhythm section of bassist Alex Lyon and drummer Todd Glass. Motor City Josh also plays on the CD. The result is a sound that incorporates the talents of all involved, producing a solid collection of well-crafted tunes. ―The greatest thing for me is to write great songs with great lyrics,‖ says Keith, a former long-time journalist who is now executive director of ARISE Detroit!, a community mobilization organization. ―That‘s what I get a lot of response to. I never fashioned myself as someone trying to be a guitar hero. I want to be appreciated more as a songwriter.‖ Keith also hopes the CD brings appreciation for the many talented working blues musicians in Detroit, as well as blues legends of the past. ―Before I could play a note, I would go to shows and I could see that these blues guys were awesome,‖ Keith says. ―I met and Luther Allison and other guys who were all great cats and nice guys. ―They were really more than average guys. They were people we should revere. I wanted to make that (title) song a tribute, that it is really special to be a bluesman. It is a wonderful experience to share with people the great feeling of blues music.‖ According to Keith, ―Bluesmen Are Kings‖ has gotten air play in England and Australia as well as local radio stations WHFR, WEMU and WDET. ―I wanted to produce something listenable and fun, as well as make each song stand on its own,‖ he says. ―No two sound alike. There is jump blues, hardcore blues and a little rock. All those elements merge for a gutsier, blusier sound. ―I wanted to open some ears with it and make people say, ‗Wow, oui, olé.‘‖ Joe Ballor

My mother taught music in the Detroit Public Schools and my father (and later my oldest brother Stuart) played with Don Pablo and his Orchestra, they both played woodwinds and my mother played French horn, when she was in school she was in one of the first all girl orchestral groups. I started on the cornet in the Detroit Public schools at age 8. I started dabbling on the guitar at age 9 with a guitar that my parents bought my brother Steve (who ended up playing bass). I started playing school dances at age 11 and played my first bar gig at age 13. I can play keyboards and bass well enough to write and record, but my main instrument is the guitar. I have been playing and recording my whole life and have performed and released recordings with many bands as well as many recordings under my own name, I am always working on getting better and making more music, of my own and with others. My first real break came in 1999 when I recorded a booking demo of Harmonica Shah and myself, my wife just got a computer (she was working on her master‘s degree) and I went on online for the first time to try and book some gigs and ended up getting us signed to Bluetrack records in England. Shah and I went on to tour in 15 different coun- tries around the world. Besides Shah, I have played locally and recorded with Emanuel Young - former guitarist with John Lee Hooker (we went to England in 2008), Willie D. Warren (I did his last recording, just recently released digitally by Bluetrack) and Sweet Claudette. I have recorded four CDs under my own name with Charles David Stuart, Chris Brown, Steve Kohn, Maggie McCabe, Stephanie Johnson and Dave Kocbus and have also performed regionally and internationally (4 coun- tries including Australia). I have had the great pleasure of playing with and opening for many greats including Johnny Winter, B. B. King, Otis Rush, Ana Popovic, Albert Castigila, Big Bill Morganfield, Willie ―Big Eyes‖ Smith, Pinetop Per- kins, Louisiana Red and many more. In 2001 Shah and I shared the bill with Honey Boy Edwards at the Dresden Blues Festival later in 2012, I traveled to to record Honey Boy Edwards on my original song ―Detroit Blues Party‖ which was released on my Wired for Sound CD. I am happy to say I have recently received several recognitions for my music: 2013 I was nominated for two Downbeat Critics Choice awards and inducted into the Michigan Blues Hall of Fame, 2014 I received Outstanding Blues/R&B Instrumentalist from the Detroit Music Award, 2015 I was nominated for Best Entertainer from the Detroit Black Music awards. I also have the honor having A Howard Glazer Custom Amplifier (made by Ohlinger & Sons) and a Howard Glazer Singnature Model guitar (Olympus Custom , Greece) . I continue to perform and record with my own band and with other local blues artists. In 2014 Eliza Neals invited me to col- laborate with her on a song and we ended up writing half a CD together, all which were included on her current release Breaking and Entering (2015). I continue to write, record and tour with Eliza Neals. My plans are to continue to play and record for the rest of my life.

On November 23rd, Robert Jones, Jr. conducted his first of eleven DBS Blues-In-The Schools workshop at Quarton Elementary school in the Birmingham School District. Al Dubruck, Quarton Elementary Vocal Director, contracted Robert to present two workshops. One for K-2 grades and one for 3-5 grades. The workshops were conducted in the gymnasium and the children sat on the floor. Even though this was a young group Robert presented a roots based historical overview of blues music utilizing era based instruments and songs that empathized the plight of the slave. The children were very enthusiastic about the presentation and sang along to several of the songs. Robert will complete the Birmingham District workshops in February. Also, Robert with has been contracted to provide consultation on January 6, 2016 to the Birmingham School Dis- trict at their annual planning meeting for next year's music curriculum.

Photos by Tom McNab Jeff Hoagland 23

My name is Jeff Hoagland and I was born in Detroit Michigan. I began playing guitar at the age of 14 and was initially taught by my Uncle Gene who played guitar in local country bands. To this day I proudly own the 68 Fender Deluxe Re- verb that he gave to me when he retired from playing. Around this same time, I accidently stumbled upon a radio pro- gram called Blues from the Roostertail Lounge. I thought it was the most incredible music I had ever heard, and my love for Blues music had begun. I started spending all of my allowance on any blues records that I could find and spent count- less hours in my room attempting to emulate the sounds that I heard. My formative years playing guitar were mostly spent at the Attic Bar in Hamtramck, which would become my second home. It was the Attic Bar that introduced me to the man who would become my first mentor and friend in the Detroit blues scene, Johnny ―Yard dog‖ Jones. Yard dog took a liking to me and began taking me around town to many of the local jam sessions. After spending several years hanging out and jamming at the Attic, I was asked to join Odell ―Blues Boy D‖‘s Louisiana Heat. I played with Odell‘s band until I was asked by one Mr. Curtis Butler to become the lead guitar player for the legendary Butler Twins Blues Band. I held this position for approximately 2 years until the untimely deaths of both Curtis and Clarence. I am very proud not only to have played with them but to have been the last lead guitar player they ever had. I have also had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many Detroit Blues legends such as Duke Dawson, Uncle Jessie White, Junior Can- naday, Harmonica Shah, Emanuel Young, Cash McCall, and Ms. Priscilla Price. I have also performed on stage in Chi- cago with John Primer and Rockin‘ Johnny Burgin. I started the Jeff Hoagland Blues Band in 2004 after the deaths of Curtis and Clarence. We have played nonstop since then averaging nearly 100 gigs per year. The current lineup has been together for 3 years and includes ―Windsor Slim‖ Brian Smith on harmonica, Donny Burton on drums, and Scottie Crawford on bass guitar. We are currently working on our second CD which we hope to have released by summer time and are also looking to expand our fan base with out of state bookings. My biggest influences musically are without a doubt Curtis and Clarence Butler who taught me how to play the ―real‖ blues. I have many guitar players that I love, but my absolute favorites are Curtis Butler, Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Hubert Sumlin, Magic Sam, John Primer, Lurrie Bell, and Robert Nighthawk. My goal for the future is to keep traditional blues alive and well and in the process introduce a younger generation to the most amazing music ever created!
