DISTRICT 3800 MIDYEAR REVIEW Your Majesties:

Again, let me reiterate my congratulations and extreme gratitude to RC Metro for a great hosting of the Mid Year Review that we had yesterday. Everyone performed well under the baton of PP Raul Evange- lista and under the watchful badgering by PP Carla Dejeres. The planning organized by SDG Luz Cotoco was the best. And of course, our facilitator par-excellence SDG Maricris Lim Pineda was in her element! She showed everyone how to self-evaluate their performance to determine what each had to do to meet their committed goals and objectives.

Congratulations! Maraming Salamat! Mabuhay kayong lahat!

ON TRF CONTRIBUTION and MEMBERSHIP

Your Majesties and Fellow D3800 Rotarians:

Please read page 4 of the latest RI Region 7 and 8 newsletter.

Thanks to all your efforts, we are leading the way!

We are the highest giving and have the highest per capita among districts in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and the ! We are 9 clubs away from being a 100% giving district. Almost 50 clubs are EREY clubs. 10 clubs are 100% Paul Harris and more than 10 will achieve 100% Sustaining Member Club status.

In Membership Growth, almost 10 clubs have achieved 100% growth! We should have at least 20 clubs achieving 100% by the end of our term! More than 10 small clubs have reached charter strength! At least 25 clubs will reach charter strength by June 30, 2012. Two clubs have been set up to make up for the two that we lost and two more are in the works including our second eClub. Our goal this year is to have a total growth of 500 new members or a 25% total growth!

Konti na lang, nandoon na tayo!

Nothing will keep us from our destiny! We will make Rotary History!

GML 2011 - 2012 5 DISTRICT 3800 MEMBERSHIP STATUS REPORT

Your Majesties:

We are monitoring our membership growth figures. As you are aware, we are off and soaring with our TRF contri- butions. However, although almost all clubs had committed to 100% growth and were supposed to report this by November 1, 2011, it seems that RI figures are slow in being posted. So far, D3800 only has 2,102 registered Rotar- ians. That makes us one of the smaller districts in the Philippines, falling behind D3820 with 2,641, D3790 with 2,569, D3830 with 2,483, D3780 with 2,284, D3810 with 2,249, and D3860 with 2,238. We are only bigger than D3770 with 1,452, D3850 with 1,288 and D3870 with 1,137.

Let's go, Your Majesties! Our goal is to hit 4,500 by December 31, 2011! I know you can all do it! Let's register all your recruits NOW!!!

DG RAFAEL M. GARCIA III Subject: Zone 7A Membership Status Report as of 31 December 2011

15 January 2012

Dear Fellow Rotary Leaders of Zone 7A (Philippines & Indonesia):

Happy Chinese New Year! 恭 禧 發 財 We have just completed the first half of RY 2011-12 and it is the best time for us to review our accomplishments with respect to our over-all plan, objectives and targets for this year. RI Pres. Kalyan challenges us to “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity” so that our Districts and Clubs will be Bigger, Better and Bolder … and Greener in providing service to our less fortunate fellowmen. In his January 2012 message, he also challenges us to prepare our Clubs for the coming of a polio-free world, where “we have to be ready for it with a powerful Rotary – a Rotary of enthusiasm and confidence, of bold vision and clear ambitions. It is time for us to prepare by taking an honest look at our Clubs. Are our projects meaningful, sustainable and relevant? Are our meetings productive and enjoyable? Are our Clubs welcoming to new members, and are our schedules and events friendly to young families? And once people join us, do we welcome them properly, involve them enough? Do we make them a part of the family of Rotary quickly enough?”

A major gauge on our preparedness is the membership in our Clubs and Districts at the end of the 1st Semester of this RY 2011-12. In a separate file, I have summarized the status of our 6-month membership development cam- paign from 1 July 2011 to 31 December 2011, as follows:

Our Zone 7A registered a net growth of 1,287 new members (+6%) and 17 new and/or reinstated Clubs (+2%), when compared to our start-year figures of 21,234 members and 886 Clubs. Here are some interesting results: 1) Philippines provided almost 97% of the gain in membership and 100% of gain in Clubs as of 31 December 2011 in Zone 7A. 2) District 3790 has displaced District 3820 as the biggest District in Zone 7A, with 2,690 members and 96 Clubs. 3) District 3810 leads in membership growth with 18% (+372) increase from 2,026 to 2,398 members and 6% in Clubs (from 81 to 86 Clubs). 4) Only District 3820 registered negative growth (-10 members) while District 3800 lost a Club (San Juan Metro) during the period. 5) Membership growth worldwide remained at 2% (+21,776 members).

6 GML 2011 - 2012 Also, when comparing our 31 December 2011 membership figures with the previous year’s end-year membership, we have significant improvement in our membership efforts, as we have now surpassed the 30 June 2011 figures by 2% (+376). Significant results indicate: 1) 7 Districts registered positive growth as of 31 December 2011 when compared to 30 June 2011 figures; whereas only 3 Districts registered positive growth as of 31 October 2011. 2) District 3810 registered the highest gain at 13% (+301), followed by District 3870 (8% or +93 members). 3) District 3820 registered the highest loss (-4% or -106 members), followed by District 3830 (-3% or -66 members). Districts 3770 and 3850 registered net loss of 1 member each, respectively. 4) Only 2 Districts registered loss in Clubs, Districts 3770 (-2) and 3800 (-1). 5) Membership worldwide is still behind by 5,214 members and 19 Clubs as of 31 December 2011 when compared to 30 June 2011.

With regards to the Rotarians per Club ratios, our Zone 7A has average ratio of 25.06 as of 31 December 2011, with Philippines having a higher ratio of 25.76. These ratios, however, are much lower than the worldwide average of 35.53 as of 31 December 2011. Other significant results are as follows: 1) District 3830 still has the highest ratio @ 28.91 as of 31 December 2011; followed by District 3810 @ 27.88 and Dis- trict 3790 @ 27.17 Rotarians per Club. 2) District 3400 has the lowest ratio @ 18.95 Rotarians per Club. 3) All Districts had higher 31 December 2011 ratios when compared to their 30 June 2011 ratios, except for Districts 3790, 3820, 3830 and 3850, but are still below the worldwide average of 35 Rotarians per Club.

A major challenge to our District leaders is to encourage our Clubs to maintain their membership at their original charter strength of 25 members. For our Zone 7A, we started RY 2011-12 with 60% (534 out of 886) of our Clubs be- longing to this category. At the end of the 1st Semester, there is a slight improvement @ 57% (512 out of 903 Clubs). The status of our Clubs belonging to the under-25 member category is summarized as follows: 1) District 3400 (Indonesia) has the highest number of Clubs with under-25 members (77%). 2) Philippines started the year with 58% (463 out of 794) of all Clubs @ under-25 and slightly improved to 55% (442 out of 811) of all Clubs as of 31 December 2011. 3) Districts 3870 (drop by 12%), 3790 (11%), 3810 (10%) and 3850 (5%) had the highest reduction of Clubs in this cat- egory by 31 December 2011. 4) The number of under-25 Clubs increased in Districts 3800 (+5%) and 3780 (+3%) as of 31 December 2011. 5) If all 512 under-25 Clubs are able to achieve their charter strength of 25 members, Zone 7A will have an automatic gain of 4,036 new members, with District 3400 (Indonesia) gaining 746 members.

We reported that our Zone 7A achieved a 6% membership growth as of 31 December 2011. Analysis of the movement of Rotarians in our Zone 7A indicates: 1) The 10 New Clubs of Zone 7A contributed 276 members (1.29%). 2) Our single (1) Terminated Club registered a loss of 12 members (-0.06%). 3) Our 8 Reinstated Clubs contributed 132 members (0.61%). 4) Our 886 Existing Clubs at the start of RY 2011-12 contributed 892 new members (4.18%), which is equivalent to 1 new member per Club. 5) Significantly, this analysis indicates that we are not dependent on the formation of new Clubs in order to boost our membership and that our existing Clubs should intensify their effort in recruiting new members and retaining them.

Lastly, I would like to remind our Clubs to send your 1st Semester Semi-Annual Reports (SARs) to RI. As of 31 Decem- ber 2011, only 81% (704) of the 874 Clubs in our Zone 7A who received SARs are reported to have submitted their SARs to RI, with District 3400 registering the lowest submission @ 54% (48 out of 89) only. RI advises that Clubs, paying their dues on-line, are still required to submit hardcopies of their SARs to RI.

Yours in Rotary Service,

PDG DAVE M VILLANUEVA Rotary Coordinator, Zone 7A, RY 2010-12 +63920-9212049; +6334-4333345 DISTRICT 3800 NEW MEMBERS as of February 28, 2012

12 GML 2011 - 2012 SERVICE PROJECTS Rotary Day and Rotary Week Celebration

Saturday was another one of those days where we really showed the world what Rotary is all about. In Barangay Pineda, Pasig City, our friends of RC Paradise Valley in San Diego, California, the club that regularly hosts DGE’s from the Philippines during their training in San Diego at the International Assembly, performed a Medical Mis- sion to more than 800 beneficiaries. They did around 89 dental, 21 minor surgeries, and the rest were consulta- tions where the tons of medicine that they had brought with them from the US was distributed for free to the poor and indigent patients. Above: Exchange of bannerettes between RC Metro Gems and RC Paradise Valley after the Medical Mission.

Above : RC Paridise Valley, USA and RC GEMS, fellowship after a successful medical mission in Barangay Pineda. At the same time, at the Fortune Elementary School, in Marikina, in celebration of Rotary Week and Rotary day, about 1,500 patients were also treated. And UNTV was there to televise the whole activity! Ang galing talaga ng Rotary! Majestic Marikina President Mayor Del de Guz- man and Global President Vice Mayor Fabi Cadiz, who chaired the event, were there to show the total support of the Marikina government to this Rotary activity.

GML 2011 - 2012 13 And at Welfareville, RC San Juan GEMS was conducting a Football tournament for special children in cooperation with the Henry Moran Foundation. There were children who were mongoloids. There were autistic children. There were hearing impaired and even vision impaired children. The referee didn’t have any arms and was blow- ing on a whistle held up by harmonica device. There were even young girls who had been sexually abused and were involved in some high profile cases. It was so heartwarming to watch children being children! What a project where Rotary is truly being felt! Ang galing!

In the spirit of developing unconventional talent worthy of universal inspiration, the Center for Possibilities (CFP) together with the Rotary Club of San Juan GEMS gathered special hands for a meeting of minds with expert and reputable Filipino artists. En- titled “Hand in Hand: The Special Power of Two”, the 1st CFP-San juan GEMS painting workshop for persons with developmental difficulties allowed children of all ages to be- gin colorful illustrations that supportive pro- fessional artists finished with care. In 2 brush strokes, one ideal was realized. In 2 actions, integration between special people and pro- fessional artists was achieved. 14 GML 2011 - 2012 RI PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FEBRUARY 2012

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,

This November, I had the opportunity to speak at the Rotary in- stitute in Kolkata, India. The focus of this institute was on peace and the ways in which we in Rotary could work to build peace. When I received the invitation, I began to think about what I might say, knowing that with all that Rotarians do in this area, my main challenge would be keeping within the time limit!

But just before I arrived in Kolkata, I spoke at a water conference in Tel Aviv. It was a wonderful event at which Rotarians and non-Rotarians from all over the world came together to discuss the many chal- lenges of keeping an ever-growing population supplied with an increasingly scarce resource. Before I could begin to talk about Rotary’s contribution, however, I had to explain what Rotary is and what we do – because even in that very educated audience of scientists and entrepreneurs and executives, there were many people who had simply never heard of Rotary.

As I left that event, I began to think again about what to say in Kolkata, because so much of what we do in Rotary to build peace depends on public awareness of who we are. Why have we been so success- ful in our work to eradicate polio? Because Rotary is able to go where no government and few other nongovernmental organizations can – into homes, into schools, and into communities, with the trust and confidence of the people we serve.

When we in Rotary work for peace, we don’t do it by negotiating treaties or demonstrating in the streets. Instead, we build peace by example – by working together, whatever our nationality or back- ground, and putting others’ needs above our own. We build peace by dealing with the problems that disrupt people’s ability to live normal, peaceful lives – whether those problems are a lack of water, or sanitation, or safe, affordable housing; whether they stem from a shortage of education or health care, or a need to build productive and positive connections between communities. In everything we do, we rely on our good name.

This is why all of us have a responsibility to be sure that our good name is indeed known. We need to not just work through Rotary, but talk about Rotary – letting the world know about the work we are do- ing, the differences we are making, and the benchmarks we are setting. Our Rotary work speaks to our belief that a better, more peaceful world is possible, and we need to be sure that our voices are heard.

The Rotary Club of Greater Mandaluyong, the 86th Rotary Club of D3800, even before its charter presentation and induc- tion on May 5, 2011 was already active in developing skills for livelihood projects. RCGM chose a project that will benefit the most number of persons in Barangay New Zaniga in Manda- luyong. Their adopted community and be sustainable for a long time with active participation from as many of our mem- bers as possible. This is the D'YARIO NEWSPAPER BAG WEAV- ING PROJECT or in short D'YARIO BAGS. The purpose was to satisfy humanitarian needs in our ser- vice community. The project would give substantial additional income to the weavers, thus addressing poverty alleviation, economic and community development. It is also at the same time an environmentally friendly project for cleanli- ness and reduction of wastes all around. On the month of Hearts, Feb.16, 2011 RCGM launched the start of the livelihood project in Bgy. New Zaniga. With the ordinance # 73 reducing the use of plastic bags and styropors in the City of Man- daluyong, approval by the City Council was good news for D'YARIO bags .The Barangay Capt. Edwin Cruz spouse of one of our members, generously offered to advance the resources for the 30 kits of the participants. Each kit cost P300. On top of that he allowed us the use of the Baragay Hall. At the end of the 12 sessions RCGM will be able to mar- ket the bags with guaranteed good quality by the trainer. GML 2011 - 2012 19 DISTRICT FIESTA PALAROTARY February 26, 2012

District Fiesta Palarotary - What a terrific day we had yesterday, February 26, 2012. Congratulations and thank you to the Rotary Club of Pasig Sunrise led by Majestic President Alfie Dimanlig and ably supported by Pal- aRotary Chair Alex Sotto, and AG and Global President Jun Salatandre, who invited Alvin Patrimonio and Ken- neth Duremdes and asked his FilAmerican brother play such beautiful piano during the entire PalaRotary. And of course, the we must not forget to acknowledge the leadership of SDG Dan Santos! Ang galing galing galing ninyo talaga! Everyone enjoyed. Even the weather coop- erated. When the sun started to bear down on the par- ticipants, some rain clouds came to shelter everyone, but not enough to get anyone wet!

20 GML 2011 - 2012 ADAP Cheer Dance Competition -at the Rizal gym was another equally eventful competition, under the su- per leadership of Bubut Sarmiento! Hearing the resound- ing chants of the participants led by Bubut: "AKO, AYOKO SA BAWAL NA DROGA!" Wow! We really must congratu- late Bubut for the great job she is doing. I gave additional cash prizes to the three winners and have that the win- ner be allowed to perform before the Talent Night during the DISCON! The participants at the Cheer Dance compe- tition were InterActors from all over the district. Maram- ing salamat to PP Bubut and her crew. Ang galing galing galing ninyo talaga! I am going to encourage our Interact and Rotaract leaders to incorporate the ADAP cheer at all Interact and Rotaract events much like the recitation of the Four Way Test in Rotary meetings! Declaring "AKO! AYOKO SA BAWAL NA DROGA!" before each Interact/Ro- taract function will define D3800 as totally against drugs and will make our Interactors and Rotaractors totally committed to the fight against drugs! Go District 3800! "AKO, AYOKO SA BAWAL NA DROGA!"

What was great with both activities is that people brought their families! That's the way Rotary should be! Even at our DISCON, Rotarians will be encouraged to bring their families. Come one come all! Let us enjoy be- ing Rotarians together! DG RAFAEL M. GARCIA III GML 2011 - 2012 21 District Secretary’s Reminders DS Marcelo “Jun” C. Zafra Jr.
