TRENTON BOARD OF EDUCATION 108 North Clinton Avenue Trenton, New Jersey 08609 BOARD MEETING MINUTES Monday – November 19, 2018 – 5:30 PM Completed November 29, 2018 Convened at 5:36 P.M. Call to Order Board President Gene Bouie called the meeting to order at 5:36 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance President Bouie called for the salute to the flag. McDowell Jr. - Present Business Administrator/Board Secretary – Jayne Howard - Present New Jersey Sunshine Law - Read by Board President Bouie The New Jersey Public Meetings Law was enacted to ensure the right to the public to have advanced noMcKnight of and to attend the meetings of public bodies at which any business affecting their interest is discussed or acted on. On the rules of this act, the Trenton Board of Education has caused noMcKnight of this meeting by publicizing the date, time and place, therefore posted in the Central Services Building, 108 North Clinton Avenue, City Clerk’s Office, City Hall and the Times. Anyone whose name is on the mailing list should receive a noMcKnight. Formal action will take place at this meeting. Agenda was adopted by all Board Members present. COMMUNITY: We create opportunities to engage citizens and organizations on decisions that impact schools and the community. POINTS OF PRIDE Transforming into a Community School: Upon reassignment to the Columbus School, the Superintendent asked Principal Michael Rosenberg to work with Elementary School Chief Llano to develop a plan for authentic community engagement in the surrounding neighborhood. We believe that the school coming out of status with new leadership and a fresh vision will appeal to the local school community. Special thanks to Principal Michael Rosenberg for his approach to building school community through partnerships and open communication. The FACE Team will be working to support all schools in their effort to align partnerships to school needs. The Dentist is Coming to Trenton: The District is partnering with the Oral Health Impact Project to participate in Dental Day with the Campaign Ambassador being the NBA’s Charles Cooke. The kickoff for this new partnership was on Monday October 29th. FM Radio Station Power 99 broadcasted the event as the mobile unit pulled into the parking lot at 500 Perry Street. Students were able to receive free dental exams and light dental work. Special thanks to Micah Freeman, Sharron Grady, and Denise Holguin for their collaboration and leadership. The goal is to assist with noncompliance of Immunizations/Physicals and to assist with access to Health Insurance. Other dates for Oral Health/Immunizations Mobile Units: 9th Grade Academy October 29th 8:30am – 1:30pm Jefferson Elementary November 19th 10:00am – 2:00pm Hedgepeth Middle December 10th 9:30am – 6:00pm PJ Hill Elementary January 28th 10:00am – 2:00pm Daylight High School February 11th 8:30am – 1:30pm Washington Elementary February 25th 10:00am – 2:00pm Health, Wellness, & Athletics Update: Special thanks to Athletic Director Sharron Grady for her leadership and support of all health, physical education, and athletic programs in the District. Special thanks to all the coaches that continue to pour into our students. 3 TRENTON BOARD OF EDUCATION 108 North Clinton Avenue Trenton, New Jersey 08609 BOARD MEETING MINUTES Monday – November 19, 2018 – 5:30 PM Unified Sports was presented to Grades K-9 Teachers and will begin this month at the following schools: Grant, Gregory, Rivera, Hedgepeth-Williams, and Daylight High School. Unified Sports are an all-inclusive athletic program that provides general education and special education athletes an opportunity to develop their skills and demonstrate respect for each other. SAT School Day 2018-19: Trenton Public Schools participated in SAT School Day again this year. Last year the District administered the PSAT and SAT to all Trenton students in Grades 8-12. The goal of this initiative is to create college ready students with increased opportunities for success after graduation. All TPS students will have (6) opportunities, at no cost to their families, to participate in the College Board Suite of Assessments. SAT School Day 2017 Participation: 92 percent of TPS middle school students took the PSAT 8/9 in SY 17-18. 85 percent of TPS high school students took either SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, or PSAT 8/9 in SY 17-18 SAT School Day 2018: October 10: All TPS students in grades 10 through 12 will participate in the SAT or PSAT/NMSQT October 17: All TPS students in grades 8 and 9 will participate in PSAT 8/9 October 24: SAT Makeup Day (Trenton Central and Daylight Twilight) All TPS students in grades 9 through 12 receive individualized Khan Academy preparation to improve performance based on their most recent scores Student performance on these assessments is used for: Acceptance to colleges and universities in the US and abroad Placement in honors and accelerated courses Grouping students within classrooms and differentiating instruction In addition to the professional development and guidance documents provided to Principals, Content Leaders, Counselors, and Testing Site Managers last spring, a presentation was made to School Leadership Teams this school year. English teachers are receiving Khan Academy Student PracMcKnight training and will guide students through pracMcKnight sessions throughout the semester/school year in order to reinforce concepts in need of improvement. CENTRAL OFFICE TRANSFORMATION District Transformation: In order for school districts to transform, Central Offices must significantly strengthen the extent to which the office operates as a primary support system for helping principals improve teaching and learning at scale. Create learning-focused partnerships between Central Office and Schools 2. Redesign the Central Office so that it functions as a high performing customer service organization providing high-quality, relevant, and differentiated instructional, human resources, business, and other services that support learning-focused partnerships 3. Lead by teaching and learning – engage Central Office staff in continuously finding, designing, and implementing more effective services for district-wide teaching and learning improvement Transforming Central Office is a major undertaking, requiring more than just making changes to the organizational chart, adding or eliminating positions, or improving long-standing operations. It requires the organization to take a deep look at the current work of all positions and determine to what extent we can show that this work is aligned to improving teaching and learning districtwide. And if not, what do we do about it to
