Legers and cash books of general merchants predominate, but there are also records of other enterprises. Fo r the sake of shelf co nvenience, records of some societies, or clubs, are included in this grouping. Ledgers may be located by the labels attached to acid-free sleeves. Sleeves should be replaced before res helving . Definitions Ledger - shows debits and credits related to each account Cash Book - lists amounts of money received or paid out , usually by date, not by account Day Book - lists amounts of Archivesmoney reci eved or paid out each day - kept like a journal or diary of business * * * Appointment Books of William Henry Wilkison, Solicitor The young William Henry Wilkison was soon to be appointed County Court Judge.County The e ntries in the diaries are brief, and pertain mostly to legal business. Deviations are startling, as in 1869 when a reference is made to an eclipse of the sun. The diaries are as follows: 1. A Rowsell's Di ar or Law and Commerical Rememberance 1866 L&Aprinted in Toronto . Spine reads "Chancery ' ronfains reminders of up-coming court cases, Napanee-Belleville-Kingston. 972.438 2. A Rowsell's Diary as above, for 1869. 972.439 Morden and Ruttan Records of a Law Firm, Napanee These records were found in a vault over the Bank of Montreal in Napanee, where the Metzler Insur ance Office was located. This space was previously occupied by G.F. Ruttan's Law Offices. Contains reference 11 11 to the Croyden Shop • 1859-1866 976.113 and 974.35 General Merchant (1863 - 1880) Day Book of a Napanee Merchant, 1863-1880. Fraser, a dealer in farm machinery, Napanee. A copy of the Canada Casket at back. [ thin] 976.126 Insurance Ledger of an insurance agent, Napanee, 1880-1885. 978. 324.1 Erinsville Ledger (1889) In sc r i bed B. Murphy, Er i ns vill e . 972.425 Business Records - 4 - Day Book, probably of Robert Easton Inscribed in front cover: 11 In Chancery, Blakely VS Easton. This is the Book of Accounts mentioned and referred to in the affidavit of the defendant ... 11 October A.D. 1873. James F. Bartels. 11 Contains: Accounts, 1863-1872 Salesman's Routes 1871-1873 Accounts, 1872-1881 Entry dated 1873, May 22: 11 Forbid Blakely to Build or do anything on the Lot before Staats S. Madden vs Philip Embury, before 9 & 10 o'clock a.m. 11 974.34 General Merchant, Napanee {1854-1856) Ledger of a dealer in drygoods, principal items being sugar and c loth. Many Napanee names. Inscribed on front 11 11 11 flyleaf: "Maud Hawley and LuluArchives Embury • Several pages written in a different [later?] hand, in pencil, with what seem to be class lists of boys and girls. Tracings of a knife, fork, keys. 972.?54 General Merchant,County Camden Township (Jan. 1855 - Dec. 1855) Ledger of dealer in dry goods, including a large number of medicines and dyes. At the end of the ledger is the following inscription: 11 Gave Keller Key of House, May 21 , 1855 11 11 James [Lorent] commenced work Sep. 25th 11 "1 Axe soldL&A Nov. 5th Warranted to D. O'Brien 11 "1 Axe sold to Wm Reed Nov 26th 1855 11 "Martin Mahar commenced work at noon on Monday 26th Nov. 11 Names included in Ledger:t Brisco, Walter Lucas, Joseph Embury, Valentine Meyer, Philander Hartin, Joseph Powers, William Hawley, James 974.41 t James M. Hawley died 1877, buried Centreville Valentine Detlor Embury is known to have operated a bakery in Tamworth in 1865 Joseph B. Lucas died in 1927 and is buried in Moscow Joseph Hartin (1837-1914) is buried in Centreville Business Records - 5 - General Merchant, Camden Township (1852-1858) This ledger contains good information about merchandise taken in payment for debts, particularly lumber. Many of the names are the same as 974.41. It is known to have been donated by Mrs. Jessie Brader of Toronto. 974.39 Ledger of John Benson, Napanee (1833) Inscribed in front cover, "examd 31st Oct. 1833" Begins "Napanee, Feby 5th 1833" and runs to May 19, 1834. Sale of general merchandise, spirits. 974.31 Day Book of John Benson, Napanee (1848-1876) 974.52 Accounts Payable Book of John Benson (1848-1881) [no cover] These are part of the very large collection of Benson Papers at the Museum. Archives Unidentified Ledger (1841-42) The original user of this ledger purchased it in Kingston. It was acquired by the Society on April 28, 1910 (Warner# 140). 976.121 or 974.32 Small Notebook County Faint inscription on cover, "William Ball or Bell" Got on July 10, 1888". Notebook contains travel expenses. There is a ledger containing information on speculations of William BellL&A in the Miscellany. 976.120 General Merchant, Adolphustown (1858-1859) Ledger covering sale of groceries, dry goods, plus sewing and tailoring. 981.23 Henderson Notebook (1909) Contains record of sales of what may be fruit or vegetables, plus hours worked for various Napanee people [cleaning?] plus recipes for home remedies. Dated 1909. Donated by Mrs. Wm. Heywood, 346 Sheppard Ave., Willowdale, in 1962. On note inside, in Judge Smith's hand: "Paper's concerning James Henderson's wife's family, Business Records - 6 - formerly of Simcoe Street, S. Napanee, from Mrs. Wm. Heywood who bought her property in 1958." Anderson Brothers Bakery, Napanee (1894-1895) Three ledgers covering sale of groceries, bread, cakes. Cash Book of David Roblin, Richmond (1837-1838) Roblin bought this book in New York. It contains records of sales of dry goods, and was donated to the collection by a Mr. Perry on January 2, 1908. A note inside tells us that Margaret and Elizabeth Dryden worked for Roblin in 1840. Other employees c1837 were: John Smith, John McBride, David Kimmerly, Alphonso Howard, Chr. Warner, 11 11 Nicholas Oliver and The Frenchman • 974.30 Napanee Merchant (1841-1845) As well as records of an unidentifiedArchives merchant, 1841-45, this ledger contains the transactions of Napanee upholsterer, Richard McNeill, 1893-1894. It was donated by Harry McNeill, his son. E. Hooper and Sons, 11 E11 Ledger (1878-1880) This previously Countyunidentified ledger contains an invoice from 11 E. Hooper and Sons, Dry Goods, Milinery, Laces, Carpets, Clothing, Napanee 11 which corresponds exactly to the accounts receivable entry on the facing page. Hooper brought the ledger book in Toronto. L&A 976.118 General Merchant (1834-1839) The original user of the ledger bought it in Kingston. It was donated to the Collection on April 28, 1910. 974.33 General Merchant (1834-1839) This large ledger has been used as a scrapbook, obscuring the entries. 974.511 Business Records - 7 - Napanee Tax Arrears (1855-1869) This ledge r, possibly belonged to a Treasurer of the Town and lists taxes owing on various Napanee properties. 972.420 Dues Book of a Benevolent Society, Napanee (1892-1895) Members of the unidentified society include: Baines, E.H. Pruyn, T.D. Henry, Alexander Shannon, Robert Jarvis, Arth ur , Rev . Warner, S.C. Loyst, J.S. 974.37 Ledger of C.S. McKim, Napanee (1860-67) The ledger covers transactions regarding dry goods, coats, boots and shoes, and mentions a house in Centreville and a house in Napanee. The end of the ledger contains a draft of a note from C.S. McKim requesting a meeting with his credi tors, plus a completeArchives bankruptcy summary. This includes an inventory of goods remaining in 1867 and a l i st of liabilities as of April, 1867. 972 .
