We’d like to give a big ‘Thank You’ to our sponsor The Laboratory Spa & Health Club (labspa.co.uk) for giving us the opportunity to provide smart new kit, and enabling other improvements to our Finchley Gunns women’s section . Extras! Featured player profile: Emily Jones In this edition’s newsletter, we take the time to get to know club stalwart, Emily Jones. Inheriting the nickname, PA, for her unusual bowling style which was reminiscent of South African ‘frog in a blender’, Paul Adams, Jones introduction into cricket was similar to many other young girls around the country, battling it out in family games of backyard cricket before tagging along to training with her big brother at Barnet. Before long, the buzz of having boys both irritated and embarrassed at getting out to a girl, gave PA a continual zest for the game we all love.

Long before she led Finchley Twos to one of their most successful league finishes, Jones represented Middlesex at all levels. Here’s all you need to know about another of Finchley’s home-grown heroes.

Star sign: Pisces Career: I’m a special needs teacher at Swiss Cottage Special Needs School. I work with a lovely class of 9 Autistic children, who have a LOT of personality and ensure I never ever have a dull day at work! Hero: Shane Warne Proudest moment: Scoring my first hundred for Portsmouth University against Sussex Uni. Favourite Finchley moment: Being part of the team who became national champs in the T20 cup. Most embarrassing cricket incident: Being sick in the middle of the pitch while I was fielding (I wasn’t even hungover). Favourite Finchley Player: Cat Dalton because I love watching her smash hundreds. Most annoying Finchley player: Jo Foster Gunns next big ‘One to Watch’: Mindy Sondh because she is a consistent and talented opening bowler and she has a great understanding of the game and a good attitude!

Women’s Cricket Week 2019

This annual event has been hosted by Colwall Cricket Club, near Malvern in Herefordshire since 1927! It takes place during the first full week of August, and is attended by more than enough players to form 4 teams for the week. This year, Suzi and Steph attended for about the 10th year, and were pleased to see Anja Peisl there. One or two others have expressed an interest in going next year - it would be great to have a larger Gunns contingent enjoying Cricket Week. Gunns Gazette 4 No. 3 Gunns Gazette Sept 2019

Gunnersbury Women’s Cricket Club - part 1 Women have been playing cricket during adulthood since the mid-eighteenth century, taking many different forms throughout its history, depending on who was playing and why the game was organised. The oldest form of cricket was village cricket. The first recorded instance of a women’s cricket match appears to have been an inter-village game played on 26th July 1745.

During the 19th century, a paternalistic society gave out dire warnings about the participation of women in physical activity such as sport, producing conspiracy theories such as leading to the inability to have children! This was as much part of a push back against the growing movement for the emancipation of women, and the development of women’s cricket lost some of its momentum. That changed in the early 20th century, once women were allowed to vote and, during the years between the two World Wars, interest was renewed. Gunnersbury WCC was founded in 1925, a year before the national Women's Cricket Association was formed (the WCA integrated with the ECB in 1998). Gunns first played at a school in Gunnersbury Lane, and continued to play in the area until World War II. Then, and until 1955, the Gunns were based at Headstone Lane in North Pinner. Gunnersbury WCC then started to use a ground at Boston Manor, Brentford. The final move as a women-only club was to Argyle Road, Ealing, in 1972, tenants of Ealing Technical College, now part of Thames Valley University. Gunnersbury have won the National Club Knockout competition five times – in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 2000. They also won the South Premier Division in 2001. Past members of the club include the cricketer, administrator and journalist Netta Rheinberg, and D M Turner and M I Taylor who played in the first England Women’s tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1934-1935. From the ‘Finchley Gunns History’ document available on the Finchley CC web site: “The strength of the Club is reflected in the playing honours achieved. For 4 years, from 1979 - 1982, the Club won the National Club Knock out competition. After a couple of semi-final losses in the intervening years, this feat was finally achieved again in our 75th year, 2000. In 2001 we won the South Premier Division, and went on to win the National League Title. In 2003 we ran a second XI for the first time. Since the introduction of the 2nd XI the club has gone from strength to strength with both the 1st and 2nd XI's winning promotion in 2006 and successfully building on that in 2007. Gunnersbury WCC has a long tradition of supplying players to the national and County squads., two members were selected for the first ever England team, which toured Australia in 1934. Gunnersbury has a strong policy of encouraging junior players to enjoy their cricket and realise their potential in the game. The current membership includes members of performance squads at national and county level as well as England full and academy players. 2008 saw the first year of a now cemented relationship with Finchley CC that has seen the clubs work together to develop a strong girls section now playing U11 and U13 cricket in the Middlesex League and seeing older girls playing in the 1st and 2nd XI’s. A landmark in the clubs history was reached in 2010 when the club’s membership voted to become absorbed by Finchley CC, bringing about the birth of Finchley Gunns CC as the women and girls section of the club. Through this relationship the proud tradition of Gunnersbury WCC will continue to offer cricket for women and girls of all abilities whilst developing young players to go on to represent Middlesex and England.” As ‘Finchley Gunns’ we have won the WCSL Premier league 4 times - 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018 - and have been National league champions twice. We also won the Inaugural National T20 knockout cup in 2018. In the next edition of ‘Gunns Gazette’, ‘Gunnersbury WCC - part 2’ we will list the International players linked with the club since its formation - it’s a long list and we ran out of space : ) Gunns Gazette 5 No. 3 Gunns Gazette Sept 2019
