British pop star Lily Allen made a surprise and somewhat low key appearance at the Australian Open. Allen, in Melbourne to perform at the Big Day Out, arrived in the early stages of the quarter-final between Jo Wilfried Tsonga and Novak Djokovic. While most celebrities at the tournament sit in the corporate areas with their seat numbers revealed to media for television and photography purposes, Allen was virtually anonymous in the main grandstand. The singer was seated a few rows in front of the noisiest Serbian fans, whose incessant repetitive chants in support of Djokovic would make some of Allen’s more banal lyrics seem Shakespearean. In common with a lot of females that occupy this planet, Allen was clearly a fan of the charismatic Tsonga – as well as his tennis. Brandishing a large SLR camera, the London-born Allen snapped plenty of photos, particularly of the athletic Frenchman. The 24-year-old Allen remained quite circumspect for most of the three and a half hour match, perhaps wary of drawing attention, but jumped to her feet to perform a stylish victory jig in the closing moments of the tie. When the final point was played and the Tsonga triumph confirmed, she yelled with delight and waved a handful of $50 notes in the air, perhaps indicating that she had won a side bet on the match. Allen left soon afterwards, but not before posing for photos with the few fans that recognised her.
