The Grand Theatre Volume 2 in stores now Glide Magazine calls Mike Doughty’s latest “his best in years” “After more than a decade making ends meet as a solo act, Mike Doughty has emerged from beneath the shadow of his former self with Yes and Also Yes. Perhaps age, antidepressants, the healing passage of time, or a combination of each have contributed to his lighter outlook. In any case, Yes and Also Yes is downright joyful by Doughty’s standards. That’s not to say that he’s turned over a new musical leaf here – after all, he actually used an antidepressant capsule as a percussion instrument on the album, and when he sings that he’s a “Rational Man,” he sounds like he might be smirking at the notion just a little. The acerbic wit and dark edges that have propelled his music for so long are somewhat intact, but anyone who has followed Doughty since his time with Soul Coughing and through his schizophrenic solo career will surely find this his most upbeat offering since 2008’s Golden Delicious. Armed with his best band yet, including longtime cohort “Scrap” Livingston and go-to indie keyboardist Thomas Bartlett, Doughty twists his uncanny lyrics around big beats and dense structures. There’s more go- ing on behind his relentlessly verbose vocals than there has been since the Soul Coughing days. Strings, drum machines, and synthesizers work their way into prominent roles on nearly every song. As always, Doughty’s trusty diatomic duo of brusque guitar strums and convoluted lyricism form the foundation, but the album still sounds more like a group effort than any of his other releases. Album opener “Na Na Nothing” is quintessential Doughty, the singer playing with words like “flux,” “cruff ” and “clunker” over an insistent rhythm as strings drift and tremble below. “The Huffer and the Cutter” is another song that only Doughty could have written, a classic tale of damaged people in love. Lyrics like “she doesn’t fall in love, she takes hostages” crystallize the desperation. It’s one blatant spot of darkness among an otherwise upbeat experience. “Have at It” and “Strike the Motion” highlight a more forceful full band sound. Fun songs like the half-baked folk-hop of “Vegetable,” the gleefully meaningless “Day By Day By,” the irreverent “Makelloser Man” and the dreamy “Into the Un,” with its zinging strings, dominate the album. Yes and Also Yes even includes the indie nation’s first holiday-esque tune of the year, “Holiday,” which features the arresting vocals of Rosanne Cash. She and Doughty make a surprisingly well-matched vocal pair as they wax poetic over a collage of strums and bells. Yes and Also Yes isn’t a drastic departure for Doughty. The album is 40 minutes of the musical touchstones he’s become known for, but the major difference is that anger and desperation are mostly absent from these songs. The music is melod- ically richer, the embellishments perfectly realized, and the album as a whole his best in years.” - Glide Magazine, 9/12/11 9/21 New York, NY Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds Julian Velard sets 10/27 Boston, MA 10/28 Syracuse, NY swoop in for North American dates US tour schedule 11/3 Canton, OH 11/4 Chicago, IL 11/7-8 Toronto, ONT 11/5 Sioux Falls, SD 11/11 Philadelphia, PA 11/6 Minneapolis, MN 11/7 Des Moines, IA 11/12 Boston, MA 11/9 St. Louis, MO 11/14-15 New York, NY 11/10 Cincinnati, OH 11/17-18 Los Angeles, CA 11/12 Philadelphia, PA 11/15 Arlington, VA 11/19 San Francisco, CA 11/16 Easton, MD The Washington Times give Blind Pilot’s Tide four stars “Years ago, Blind Pilot’s two founders toured around the Northwest on their bicycles, carrying their instruments with them and attracting as much attention for their “go green” transportation as the music itself. It was the band’s first major tour, as well as the first time that anyone beyond the West Coast had heard of this quirky indie folk act. We Are the Tide, Blind Pilot’s second album, lets the music do the talking. What began as a duo has since expanded into a six-person ensemble featuring upright bass, banjo, vibraphone and horns. The lineup may be large, but the songs are rarely cluttered; instead, they’re presented as homespun, folksy pop tunes, sounding a bit like the Shins with crisper production and a stronger debt to Americana music. On “Just One” and “White Apple,” the band layers coed vocal harmonies over acoustic guitars. There’s a touch of Fleetwood Mac to the band’s sound, not to mention a bit of Crosby, Stills & Nash, but linking Blind Pilot to the folk-pop icons of yesteryear doesn’t do justice to these songs. We Are the Tide never looks backward for inspiration; it looks around itself, finding a way to modernize the music that band leaders Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski grew up with.” - Washington Times, 9/12/11 Upcoming..

The “freak folk” fringe having largely faded, the nourishing, elemental influence of Americana in all its permutations continues to generate quietly exciting new music. This was evident last week at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, North Carolina, during an evening of itinerant, wornin, unbeaten songs performed by The Low Anthem and Blind Pilot. Both bands make music that is melancholy but not maudlin, that is steeped in oldtime American music but not anachronistic. The Low Anthem, a Rhode Island trio, began their set with pretty unconventional instrumentation: Ben Knox Miller playing acoustic guitar and singing, Jeffrey Prystowsky on organ, and Jocie Adams playing the crotales— sort of a small xylophone made up of discs instead of planks—with a violin bow, by far the most interesting thing I’ve seen done with a violin bow since I last saw Sigur Rós.

  • 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".
