  • Hurricane Nana
Hurricane Nana drishtiias.com/printpdf/hurricane-nana Why in News Atlantic Hurricane Nana has made a landfall on the coast of Belize. The country Belize is located on the northeast coast of Central America. Few days back, Hurricane Laura made landfall in southwestern Louisiana (South Central United States). 1/2 Key Points Tropical Cyclone: A hurricane is a type of storm called a tropical cyclone, which forms over tropical or subtropical waters. A tropical cyclone is a rotating low-pressure weather system that has organized thunderstorms but no fronts (a boundary separating two air masses of different densities). Speed of Winds: Tropical cyclones with maximum sustained surface winds of less than 39 miles per hour (mph) are called tropical depressions. Those with maximum sustained winds of 39 mph or higher are called tropical storms. When a storm's maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph, it is called a hurricane. Measurement of Wind Speed: The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating, or category, based on a hurricane's maximum sustained winds. The higher the category, the greater the hurricane's potential for property damage. Formation: There needs to be warm ocean water and moist, humid air in the region. When humid air is flowing upward at a zone of low pressure over warm ocean water, the water is released from the air as creating the clouds of the storm. Features: It has a low pressure centre and clouds spiraling towards the eyewall surrounding the "eye", the central part of the system where the weather is normally calm and free of clouds.

  • Thursday's Focus Is on Hurricanes and Flooding
Florida’s Severe Weather Awareness Week takes place from February 1-5, 2021. Severe Weather Awareness Week is an opportunity for Floridians to learn about the various weather hazards that frequently impact the state and how families and businesses can prepare for these natural events. Each day focuses on a specific weather event. Thursday’s focus is on hurricanes and flooding. The most feared weather phenomenon throughout Florida during the summer and early fall is the tropical cyclone. Close to the tropics and surrounded on three sides by warm water, the unique location of Florida makes it particularly vulnerable to these systems as they develop across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. The relatively flat terrain of Florida can also make it susceptible to flooding. Florida has a long history of hurricanes. Records indicate that approximately 118 hurricanes and around 164 tropical storms have impacted the state since 1888 (133 years), with many more cited in history books prior to that year and even before official records were kept. DID YOU KNOW??? No other state in the country has more hurricane landfalls per year on average than Florida does. Nearly 40% of all hurricanes that strike the United States make landfall in Florida. DID YOU KNOW??? In the last 150 years, all of Florida’s counties have been impacted by at least one hurricane. The North Atlantic Ocean hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and continues through November 30. However, tropical systems can still form outside of hurricane season as early as May and as late as December.

  • The Enhanced Phase of the MJO Remains Over the Indian Ocean
The enhanced phase of the MJO remains over the Indian Ocean, with an envelope of anomalous upper- level divergence continuing to extend from the eastern Atlantic into the western Indian Ocean. The suppressed phase remains predominantly over the Pacific, with the strongest upper-level convergence anomalies now centered over the eastern Pacific. The amplitude of the MJO is expected to gradually weaken over the next several days, with increased uncertainty of the state of the MJO heading into mid- September. Models favor continued easterly wave activity and support an active Atlantic basin during the outlook periods. Following the formation of TC's Omar and Nana in the Atlantic earlier this week, no new tropical cyclones (TC) have formed across the basin since earlier this week TS Omar peaked at Tropical Storm intensity to the northwest of Bermuda and since weakened and become post-tropical as it continues to track east in the open waters of the Atlantic. In the Caribbean, Hurricane Nana strengthened to a category 1 Hurricane prior to making landfall over southern Belize, triggering heavy rainfall and localized flooding over northern Honduras. As the remnant low is expected to continue to track west over Guatemala and into the Pacific, there is an increased chance that the low will reform over the next five days according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), and a moderate confidence area is added to the outlook. With the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane season upon us, all eyes remain focused in the Main Development Region (MDR) with multiple tropical waves continuing to propagate off West Africa.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) started mentioning this system in their tropical weather outlook on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 12:00 pm. At this time the system was over the Central Atlantic and was moving westward at around 15 to 20 mph with a 30% (low) chance of development in 5 days. See figure 1 below. Figure 1: The yellow x closest to the bottom over the Central Atlantic Ocean shows the position of the tropical wave that would become Nana as of Thursday, August 27, 2020. The system continued moving rapidly westward during the next couple of days and entered the eastern Caribbean Sea on the morning of Sunday, August 30, 2020. It became better organized later that morning with a broad area of low pressure forming along the axis of the wave. By midday the NHC upgraded the 5-day chances of formation with the system to 60% (medium) and its potential track was suggesting a path directly towards Belize. The National Meteorological Service (NMS) of Belize communicated this information to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and Advisory #1 was released to the Belizean public later that evening.

Tropical Cyclone Nana (AL162020) Wind and Storm Surge Final Event Briefing Belize 11 September 2020 Registered Office: CCRIF SPC c/o Sagicor Insurance Managers Ltd., 198 North Church Street 2nd Floor Sagicor House, P.O. Box 1087, Grand Cayman KY1-1102, Cayman Islands Email: [email protected] | Website: ccrif.org | Twitter: @ccrif_pr | Facebook: CCRIF SPC Belize, TC Nana: 5 September 2020, Final Event Briefing 1 SUMMARY Tropical Cyclone Nana was the sixteenth tropical cyclone and the fifth hurricane in the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season. On 1 September, it was upgraded from a tropical depression to a tropical storm while it was over the central Caribbean Sea, south of Jamaica. On 3 September, Tropical Storm Nana strengthened, becoming a category 1 hurricane, just before making landfall on the coast of Belize, spreading hurricane-force winds over this country. The final runs of the CCRIF loss model for wind and storm surge produced government losses for Belize, which were below the attachment point of the country’s Tropical Cyclone policy. Therefore, no payout under this policy is due. However, the Aggregated Deductible Cover (ADC) feature for Belize’s Tropical Cyclone policy was activated because a disaster alert declaration from ReliefWeb related to Tropical Cyclone Nana was issued for Belize and the modelled losses were above 10 per cent of the minimum payment of the country’s Tropical Cyclone policy. The final analysis shows that a payment of US$35,000 is due to the Government of Belize under the ADC feature. This event briefing is designed to review the modelled losses due to wind and storm surge calculated by CCRIF’s models for affected CCRIF member countries, to be analyzed with respect to members’ Tropical Cyclone policies.

  • BELIZE: Hurricane Iota Flash Update No
BELIZE: Hurricane Iota Flash Update No. 01 As of 24 November 2020 This report has been produced by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office for Belize and United Nations Emergency Technical Team (UNETT), with the support of OCHA and humanitarian partners. The information in this report is based on official preliminary reports from the Government of Belize (NEMO) and Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). If required, an update will be produced within the next 24 to 48 hours, depending on the evolution of the situation on the ground and the information available from impacted areas. KEY MESSAGES • Hurricane Iota has been responsible for an average 10- inches across the central and southern areas of Belize resulting in the recording of significant flood events across the country. This follows the flooding throughout Belize due to impact of Hurricane Eta approximately two weeks earlier. • As of 20 November 2020, NEMO reported that 235 persons were currently in shelters throughout the country especially in the Belize Rural, Cayo, and Orange Walk districts. Operations were focused on relief to the affected population and cattle farmers. • On 21 November, NEMO advised major flooding was affecting the entire country. Areas of significant flooding were in Corozal, Orange Walk, Cayo and Belize districts which was compounded by the fact the rivers were already at flood state due to Hurricane Eta and the water level was rising quickly. • On 22 November, significant areas of the Corozal, Orange Walk, Cayo and Belize districts experienced severe flooding. Residents living along or near to these rivers are called upon to take the NEMO advisories seriously, specifically around moving to safer/higher ground and mitigating water contamination.
