Frontiers of Romania: Nationalism and the Ideological Space of the Roman Limes
Print: ISBN 978-1-78491-763-0 Online: ISSN 2531-8810 EX NOVO Journal of Archaeology, Volume 2, December 2017: 63-83 63 Published Online: Dec 2017 Frontiers of Romania: Nationalism and the Ideological Space of the Roman Limes Emily R. Hanscam Dept. of Archaeology, Durham University Abstract Modern Romania is a nation-state containing space which has long been considered marginal - first as part of the Roman Empire and now within the European Union. The national narrative of Romania highlights this liminality, focusing on the interactions between the Romans and the local Dacians on the northeastern border regions of the Empire. Romania still contains significant material remnants of the Iron Age, including the Roman Limes, a series of fortifications on the Danube River meant to protect the Roman borders. As such, the archaeological tradition of this geographic space is heavily entangled with Romania’s identity as a frontier region. This paper outlines the formation of Romanian national space, focusing on the period between the seventeenth century and 1918. It considers the relationship between the materiality of the Roman Limes and ideological frontiers in Romania, examining the role of archaeology in the sustainment of the Romanian nation space. Keywords: Romania, Frontiers, Roman Limes, Ideological Space, Nationalism Introduction The foundation of the Romanian nation-state in the nineteenth century was a declaration that the intellectual elite of southeast Europe chose to orient themselves towards the West rather than the Ottoman East. Romania (Figs. 1, 2) achieved international recognition of political sovereignty in 1881, escaping subjugation by the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Russian Empire as well as the Ottomans. -

Octav ONICESCU B. 20 August 1892 - D
Octav ONICESCU b. 20 August 1892 - d. 19 August 1983 Summary. Onicescu is principally known as co-founder,together with Ghe- orghe Mihoc (1906-1981), of the Romanian school of probability as well as for his contributions to mechanics. Octav Onicescu was born in 1892 in Boto¸sani, a town of North Moldavia, into the family of a small landowner. After his baccalaureat in 1911 he became a student of the University of Bucharest. He took a degree in math- ematics in 1913, becoming then a teacher of mathematics at the reputed military gymnasium of Dealu Monastery, near Tˆagovi¸ste. After having been called for military duty in the period 1916-1918, he left for Rome in 1919, where in the feverish atmosphere generated by the Einstein theory of general relativity, he started a scientific activity which was to last for more than six decades. Guided by Tullio Levi-Civita (1873-1941) at the University of Rome, Onicescu has already defended his doctoral thesis Sopra gli spazi ein- steinieni a gruppi di transformazioni by June 1920. In the autumn of 1920 Onicescu left for Paris, where he attended the lectures given at the Sorbonne by Emile´ Picard and Elie´ Cartan, and delivered papers on absolute differ- ential calculus at the seminar led by Jacques Hadamard (1865-1963) at the Coll`ege de France. Onicescu’s interest in probability theory and mechanics originated in his Italo-French period of studies. He got interested in probability by attending a seminar led by Francesco Paolo Cantelli (1875-1966) and his interest in mechanics stemmed from Cartan’s lectures on integral invariants. -

The Dissolution of the Diocese of Caransebes and the Fate of Bishop Veniamin Nistor Under the Communist Regime
THE DISSOLUTION OF THE DIOCESE OF CARANSEBES AND THE FATE OF BISHOP VENIAMIN NISTOR UNDER THE COMMUNIST REGIME Daniel ALIC Abstract: The old Diocese of Caransebes, institution that gathered around the Romanian society from Banat, had an unfortunate destiny. Following the political changes from Romania, occurring since 1948, the role and importance of Romanian Orthodoxy were considerably diminished by the communist regime. Due to the political enmities regarding the Church, the Diocese of Caransebes ended by fusion – on February 5, 1949 – with the Archbishopric of Timisoara. A year before this event occurred, the Theological Academy from Caransebes had to close its gates due to the same political reasons. Veniamin Nistor, ordained as bishop of Caransebes on August 24, 1941, in times of war and in a difficult period for the entire Romanian society, witnessed these dramatic changes in the life of the Church from Banat. Although he proved to be in many ways a true founder and organizer of the diocese through his spiritual, cultural and social vision, Bishop Veniamin Nistor was forced to leave his mission and withdraw from his diocese, as inmate, at Alba Iulia, where he served as an abbot of the Holy Trinity monastery (the Reunification Cathedral). The spiritual sufferings and the health problems caused by his forced departure from Caransebes hastened his death. On February 5, 1963, Bishop Veniamin Nistor passed away and was buried near hermitage St. John the Baptist – Alba Iulia, alongside two other bishops persecuted under the communist regime: Ioan Stroia, bishop of the Army, and Policarp Morusca, the first bishop of all the Romanians from the USA. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is the development of a literary culture among the Romanians in the period 1829-1890; the effect of this development on the Romanians’ drive towards social modernization and political independence; and the way in which the idea of literature (as both concept and concrete manifestation) and the idea of the Romanian nation shaped each other. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes. -

Revenind la cercetarea în domeniul economic, trebuie să constatăm că România a avut pioneri pe Dan Virgil Voiculescu, Gheorghe Păun, Gheorghe Zane, Alexandru D. Measurement and Control of Statistics Learning Processes Based On
An Overview on the Contributions of the Academician Octav Onicescu to the Informational Statistics and Further Developments Mihaela Oprea1 (1) Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiesti, Department of Automatic Control, Computers and Electronics Bdul Bucuresti, No 39, Ploiesti, 100680, ROMANIA E-mail: mihaela[at]upg-ploiesti.ro Abstract Octav Onicescu is the greatest statistician that Romania ever had. He is the only Romanian statistician included in the Statisticians of the Centuries’ volume published in 2001 by Springer Science at the initiative of the International Statistical Institute. The paper presents an overview on the academician Octav Onicescu’s research activity in the field of informational statistics. Two major contributions brought to this domain are discussed: Onicescu’s informational energy and correlation, highlighting some applications’ areas and further developments. Keywords: Probability theory, Information theory, Mathematical statistics, Informational statistics, Onicescu’s Informational energy 1 Introduction Octav Onicescu (1892-1983) is one of the greatest mathematicians of Romania with a remarkable international reputation, being the only Romanian statistician included in the Statisticians of the Centuries’ volume published in 2001 by Springer Science at the initiative of the International Statistical Institute, the representative association for international statistics, his presentation in the book being made by Marius Iosifescu [11]. He considered himself ([18], page 18) as a researcher of facts: human, social, economic, of natural phenomena, with mathematical means, preferable probabilistic or mechanical, researcher that determined along his whole life to assimilate much more mathematical science in order to use it in his research activity. The academician Octav Onicescu promoted probability as the science of events measure and random processes, and mechanics as support or model of any science of natural movements.
