Octav Onicescu

Revenind la cercetarea în domeniul economic, trebuie să constatăm că România a avut pioneri pe Dan Virgil Voiculescu, Gheorghe Păun, Gheorghe Zane, Alexandru D. An Overview on the Contributions of the Academician Octav Onicescu to the Informational Statistics and Further Developments Mihaela Oprea1 (1) Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiesti, Department of Automatic Control, Computers and Electronics Bdul Bucuresti, No 39, Ploiesti, 100680, ROMANIA E-mail: mihaela[at]upg-ploiesti.ro Abstract Octav Onicescu is the greatest statistician that Romania ever had. He is the only Romanian statistician included in the Statisticians of the Centuries’ volume published in 2001 by Springer Science at the initiative of the International Statistical Institute. The paper presents an overview on the academician Octav Onicescu’s research activity in the field of informational statistics. Two major contributions brought to this domain are discussed: Onicescu’s informational energy and correlation, highlighting some applications’ areas and further developments. Keywords: Probability theory, Information theory, Mathematical statistics, Informational statistics, Onicescu’s Informational energy 1 Introduction Octav Onicescu (1892-1983) is one of the greatest mathematicians of Romania with a remarkable international reputation, being the only Romanian statistician included in the Statisticians of the Centuries’ volume published in 2001 by Springer Science at the initiative of the International Statistical Institute, the representative association for international statistics, his presentation in the book being made by Marius Iosifescu [11]. He considered himself ([18], page 18) as a researcher of facts: human, social, economic, of natural phenomena, with mathematical means, preferable probabilistic or mechanical, researcher that determined along his whole life to assimilate much more mathematical science in order to use it in his research activity. The academician Octav Onicescu promoted probability as the science of events measure and random processes, and mechanics as support or model of any science of natural movements. -

On the Exchanges Between Wolfgang Doeblin and Bohuslav Hostinský
On the exchanges between Wolfgang Doeblin and Bohuslav Hostinsky´ Laurent MAZLIAK1 October 30, 2007 Action must always be the daughter of rigor before being the sister of dream G.Canguilhem2 Abstract: In this paper, we present the letters sent by Wolfgang Doeblin to Bohuslav Hostinsky´ between 1936 and 1938. They concern some aspects of the general theory of Markov chains and solutions of Chapman-Kolmogorov equation that Doeblin was then establishing for his PhD thesis. Key-Words: Markov Chains, Markov Processes, Chapman-Kolmogorov Equation, History of Probability calculus AMS Classification : 01A60, 60J10, 60J27, 60J35 INTRODUCTION On June 17th, 1936, Maurice Frechet´ (1878-1973), one of the most prominent representatives of the French mathematical school as well as a creator of the modern school of probability calculus, wrote to his col- league and friend Bohuslav Hostinsky´ (1884-1951), Professor of Theoretical Physics at Brno University in Czechoslovakia: I have a new pupil named Doblin¨ who is studying probabilities in chains and will soon 3 (n) publish in the C.R. some results that I feel are interesting. He has much extended the results for the pik obtained by M.Hadamard at the Bologna conference and those of Romanovsky in his last memoir in the Acta. Since the beginning of the 1990s, there has been a resurgence of interest in Wolfgang Doeblin (1915- 1940), an amazing and engaging character, and above all in his magnificent mathematical achievements. -

Bruno De Finetti, Radical Probabilist. International Workshop
Bruno de Finetti, Radical Probabilist. International Workshop Bologna 26-28 ottobre 2006 Some links between Bruno De Finetti and the University of Bologna Fulvia de Finetti – Rome ……… Ladies and Gentleman, let me start thanking the organizing committee and especially Maria Carla Galavotti for the opportunity she has given me to open this International Workshop and talk about my father in front of such a qualified audience. This privilege does not derive from any special merit of my own but from the simple and may I say “casual” fact that my father was Bruno de Finetti. By the way, this reminds me one of the many questions that the little Bruno raised to his mother: “What if you married another daddy and daddy married another mammy? Would I be your son, or daddy’s?” As far as the question concerns myself, my replay is that “I” would not be here to-day! As I did in my speech in Trieste on July 20 2005, for the 20th anniversary of his death, I will try to show the links, between Bruno and Bologna in this case, Trieste last year. Sure, a big difference is the fact that he never lived in Bologna where he spent only few days of his life compared to the twenty and more years he spent in Trieste, yet it was in Bologna in 1928 that he moved the first step in the international academic world. I refer to his participation in the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Bologna in September (3-10) of that year. It was again in Bologna in that same University that he returned fifty-five years later to receive one of the very last tributes to his academic career.
