For more information contact [email protected] 1 The Rhetoric of Sensibility: Argument, Sentiment, and Slavery in the Late Eighteenth Century Brycchan Anthony Oliver Carey Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London Dissertation Submitted for the Degree of PhD April 2000 BP LOti4. wuv. 2 Abstract This dissertation argues that by adapting the style and techniques of sentimental novels, poetry, and drama to persuasive writing a significant number of late-eighteenth century political writers were able to develop a distinct and recognisable rhetoric of sensibility. It develops this argument by examining eighteenth-century views on the use and purpose of rhetoric, and by looking at writing in one of the most wide-ranging debates of the late- eighteenth century, the debate over abolition of the slave trade. Chapter One looks at traditional ('neo-classical') rhetoric and contrasts this with some of the many varieties of the eighteenth-century 'new rhetoric'. Chapter Two looks at particular rhetorical strategies employed during the sentimental period and identifies the main tropes of the rhetoric of sensibility. Chapter Three examines the relationship between slavery and literary sentimentalism, looking at the way in which imaginative writers used sentimental rhetoric to advance the idea of anti-slavery. It also considers the extent to which abolitionist poems, plays, and novels themselves contributed to the development of a sentimental rhetoric. Chapter Four examines the use of sentimental rhetoric in non- fictional slavery-related tracts and pamphlets. It explores the ways in which the sentimental rhetorical strategies outlined in Chapter Two were adopted by both pro and anti-slavery writers of the 1780s. Chapter Five discusses how William Wilberforce, the main parliamentary advocate for abolition, used sentimental rhetoric in his early parliamentary speeches. The conclusion examines anti-slavery writing after the collapse of the first abolition campaign in 1792. Abbreviations DNB Dictionary of National Biography ESTC English Short-Title Catalogue HCJ Journal of the House of Commons flU Journal of the House of Lords OED2 Oxford English Dictionary, Revised Edition 7 Introduction Towards the end of Memoirs of Modern Philosophers, a satirical novel written in 1800 by Elizabeth Hamilton, Bridgetina Botherim is rehearsing a plan to woo the man she loves. Bridgetina, the principal character of the novel, believes herself to be a philosopher and thinking that 'now she should have the glory of arguing him into love', she looks over 'a speech which had long been conned, twice written over in a fair hand, and thirteen times repeated in private'. To aid the delivery of this spontaneous effusion of her affection she has 'for the help of memory, in case of interruption, a sort of index taken of the contents'. This index includes the following: Moral sensibility, thinking sensibility, importunate sensibility; mental sensation, pernicious state of protracted and uncertain feeling; congenial sympathy, congenial sentiment, congenial ardour; delicious emotions, melancholy emotions, frenzied emotions; tender feeling, energetic feeling, sublimised feeling, the germ, the bud, and the full-grown fruits of general utility, &c. &c.1 The plan fails and so she decides to post the speech to her beloved, fantasising that their correspondence wifi be published under the title The Sweet Sensations of Sensibility, or the Force of Argument. Bridgetina believes that she can argue the object of her desire 'into love', that is, by playing on a sentimental theme she can force him to experience emotions which he did not previously possess. The index is thus a form of rhetoric, indeed, it is a prescription for a course of sentimental rhetoric describing a dozen or so sentimental tropes and arguments. 1 Elizabeth Hamilton, Memoirs of Modem Philosophers, 3 vols (Bath: R. Cruttwell, 1800), III, p. 102. 8 In his 1990 essay 'Sensibility as Argument' Stephen Cox calls this index 'cant, jargon, [and] self-important verbiage'. 2 The novel is a satirical one and cant, jargon, and self-importance are being exposed as fashion and folly. But this appears to be a special case. 'Plainly', argues Cox, 'the rhetoric of sensibility has been around long enough to weary any normal audience'. Cox is right to note that before a discourse can become amenable to such sweeping satire it must first be familiar. Indeed it was. By the year 1800 sixty years worth of sentimental novels, plays, and poems had been produced to which were added political and philosophical writings which either promoted or referred to theories of sensibility. In this context Hamilton was able to clearly distinguish and ridicule a number of rhetorical strategies which characterised the rhetoric of sensibility and distinguished it from any other rhetorical system. Cox observes Hamilton's identification of these strategies, calling them 'formulas', but does not proffer any further analysis of how they might work—or even ask if the formulas satirised by Hamilton bore any relationship to actual strategies used by sentimental persuaders. This dissertation argues that during the middle to late eighteenth century a distinct and recognisable sentimental rhetoric became available for use by writers and public speakers. It suggests that this rhetoric is a mode of persuasive language, popular from the middle to the late eighteenth century, in which a number of loosely connected rhetorical tropes and arguments became available for the rhetorician to choose from when attempting to persuade an audience that a person, or group of people, are suffering and that that suffering should be diminished or relieved entirely. Central to this rhetoric is a belief in the power of sympathy to raise awareness of suffering, to change an audience's view of that suffering, and to direct their opposition to it. As we shall see, sentimental rhetoric was closely associated with the largely literary movement now known as 'the new rhetoric', but was not entirely dependent on it.

This collection of essays dedicated to George Starr concentrates on Professor Starr’s interest in the novel and the ways in which sentimentality impacted fiction during the eighteenth century. More particularly the essays spin off from an essay by Professor Starr, “Only a Boy,” published in Genre in 1977. That essay argued that the male protagonist of sentimental novels could not satisfy the requirement of the hero of the Bildungsroman, because he does not, indeed cannot, grow in any significant way. Professor Starr begins his discussion with Defoe’s Colonel Jack. He argues that Jack never grows out of regarding himself as a child and hence essentially innocent. Although the title of Professor Starr’s essay is based upon a moment in Huckleberry Finn, when the narrator escapes a dangerous situation by pleading his status as a child and hence not guilty of any act that might have been interpreted as evil, Colonel Jack makes similar pleas by way of excusing his actions. Professor Starr argues that Jack resembles the protagonist of the sentimental novel in this continuing naiveté, his blundering attempts at marriage, and his lack of any real growth. This pattern certainly plays its way into Laurence Sterne’s Sentimental Journey and Henry Mackenzie’s Man of Feeling. As for Frances Burney’s Evelina, the female protagonist it shows to possess the characteristics of the hero of sentiment without problems, since some child-like qualities and complete sexual innocence were the ideals of the heroines of the sentimental novel.

By examining working-class literature that adopts the rhetoric of “feeling right” in order to promote a proletarian ideology as well as neo-slave narratives that wrestle with the legacy of slavery, this study explores the ways contemporary authors engage with familiar sentimental tropes and ideals. Despite modernism’s influential assertion that sentimentalism portrays emotion that lacks reality or depth, narrative claims to feeling— particularly those based in common and recognizable forms of suffering—remain popular. It seems clear that such authors as Grace Lumpkin, Josephine Johnson, John Steinbeck, Margaret Walker, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison apply the rhetorical methods of sentimentalism to the cultural struggles of their age. Contemporary authors self-consciously struggle with sentimentalism’s gender, class, and race ideals; however, sentimentalism’s dual ability to promote these ideals and extend identification across them makes it an attractive and effective mode for political and social influence.

By the late eigh- teenth century both terms in common usage referred equally to kings and to those who ruled (queens, regents). “Royal” also referred, and still does, to near relatives of the monarch, as in “royal family,” and I use it in this sense also. 2. Austen’s conservatism is famously unstable. Feminist critics espe- cially have suggested that a feminist subtext undercuts or at least tempers the conservative trajectories of her novels. In Equivocal Beings, Claudia Johnson provides a comprehensive discussion of the conservative reading of Emma as well as its implicit feminist critique (192–96). 3. Unlike Pride and Prejudice, in which she was revising an earlier draft, Austen wrote Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion after 1810. She began writing Mansfield Park in February 1811, the same month in which the Regency began (Sturrock 30; see also Tomalin 223–24). 4. Clara Tuite suggests that Mansfield Park can be read as “a provincial deflection of the wider national issues of responsible hereditary gov- ernment” (Romantic Austen 132). 5. The phrase “Queen Caroline affair” historically refers to the events of 1820 and 1821, when the uncrowned King attempted to divorce his wife by Act of Parliament. Although Caroline was technically Queen, supporters of the new King used a variety of means, some political, some rhetorical, to contest her legitimacy. Similarities as well as an evident continuity between this episode and the Prince’s first attempt to obtain a divorce, some fifteen years earlier, have often led scholars to refer to their marital disputes before, during, and after the Regency as the Queen Caroline affair.

Nussbaum, Co-Chair This dissertation examines how late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British novelists—major authors, Laurence Sterne and Jane Austen, and lesser-known writers, Pierce Egan, Charles Jenner, and Alexander Bicknell—challenged Henry Fielding’s mid-eighteenth-century critique of caricature as unrealistic and un-novelistic. In this study, I argue that Sterne, Austen, Egan, and others translated visual tropes of caricature into literary form in order to make their comic writings appear more “realistic.” In doing so, these authors not only bridged the character-caricature divide, but a visual- verbal divide as well. As I demonstrate, the desire to connect caricature with character, and the visual with the verbal, grew out of larger ethical and aesthetic concerns regarding the relationship between laughter, sensibility, and novelistic form. ii This study begins with Fielding’s Joseph Andrews (1742) and its antagonistic stance towards caricature and the laughter it evokes, a laughter that both Fielding and William Hogarth portray as detrimental to the knowledge of character and sensibility. My second chapter looks at how, increasingly, in the late eighteenth century tears and laughter were integrated into the sentimental experience.

Perhaps you would then add that the few typical characteristics of well-known peo­ ple become binding stereotypes in the course of time and as such are sufficient to let the person become instantly recognisable.

Burling A "sickly sort of refinement": The Problem of Sentimentalism in Mackenzie's The Man of Feeling Henry Mackenzie's The Man of Feeling, enormously popular when first published in 1771, was acknowledged by an entire generation of readers as the ultimate representation of the sentimental ethos. But outright contradiction now pervades critical discussion of the novel, with interpretation splitting on two central questions: Is Harley, the hero, an ideal man or a fool? And is the novel sympathetic to sentimentalism or opposed to it? The antithetical critical responses to The Man of Feeling may be resolved, however, when we recognize that Mackenzie was neither completely attacking nor condoning sentimentalism in toto. He was attempting to differentiate what he considered to be attributes of genuine and desirable humane sensitivity from those of the affected sentimentality then au courant in the hypocritical beau monde.

ABSTRACT In the mid-nineteenth century a compulsory education system was emerging that allowed all children to attend public schools in northern states. This dissertation investigates school attendance rates among African American children in New York State from 1850–1870 by examining household patterns and educational access for African American school-age children in three communities: Sandy Ground, Syracuse, and Watertown. These communities were selected because of their involvement in the Underground Railroad. I employed a combination of educational and social history methods, qualitative and quantitative. An analysis of federal census reports, state superintendent reports, city directories, area maps, and property records for the years 1820–1870 yielded comparative data on households, African American and European American, in which African American school-age children resided. The nature of schooling and the manner in which the household and community advocated for school attendance during this period are also described and compared.

Philosophical Enquiries into the Science of Sensibility: An Introductory Essay Koen Vermeir and Michael Funk Deckard Introduction Burke and the writing of the Philosophical Enquiry Edmund Burke (1730-1797) was 23 years old when he finished writing the Philosophical Enquiry, as he attests to in the introduction to the 1757 edition.29 A major work in the history of criticism (or what we would now call aesthetics), the topic of the book had long been present in Burke’s mind. From his early years in college (1743-1748), Burke was fascinated by literature, poetry, and art. Sneaking away when possible, spending much of his free time reading literature and history in the public library, Burke was not much engaged in his formal studies at Trinity College, Dublin, but aspired to become a poet.30 Burke was immersed from early on in literary pursuits.
