Pickard A seismic explosion programme has been carried out in the Vancouver Island-Strait of Georgia area of Advanced Dynamic Oceanography .... R.W. Stewart Western Canada. The programme included a relatively intensive survey in the Strait of Georgia between Campbell River and the south end of Texada Island, as Related Studies: well as a number of longer range refraction lines ex• tending from Kelsey Bay along the coast as far south Geodesy H.R. Bell as northern California, and east through the mountains to a distance of 700 km. Gravity readings were ob• Electronic Instrumentation F.K. Bowers tained at intervals of about ten km. along the east coast of Vancouver Island as well as for a number of Computational Methods C. Froese east-west traverses. Readings were also obtained for a few locations on the British Columbia mainland. Except for a marked positive trend in the Victoria area the regional value of the Bouguer anomaly for the Vancouver Island area is nearly zero. The average structure for the area, derived from the seismic refraction observations consists of a layer of volcanic and granitic strata less than five km. in thickness, and an intermediate layer 46 km. thick with a constant velocity for compressional waves of 6.66 km/sec. A velocity of about 7.7 km/sec. for the mantle has been observed along unreversed refraction lines, both along the coast and east through the moun• tains. Interpretation of the refraction observations has been based mainly on first arrival phases. The observed regional gravity anomaly is compatible with the crustal model obtained from the seismic results. - i - ABSTRACT A seismic explosion program has been carried out in the Vancouver Island- Strait of Georgia area of Western Canada. Together they comprise a complex but coherent portrait of Canada’s most heavily populated coastal zone. Home to about 10% of Canada’s contemporary population, the region defined by this inland sea has been greatly influenced by its relations with the Strait, which is itself the focus of a number of escalating struggles between stakeholders. This study was motivated by a conviction that understanding this region and the sea at the centre of it, the struggles and their stakeholders, requires understanding of at least these five key elements of the Strait’s modern history. Drawing on a range of archival and secondary sources, the study depicts the Strait in relation to human movement, the Strait as a locus for colonial dispossession of indigenous people, the Strait as a multi-faceted resource mine, the Strait as a valuable waste dump and the Strait as a place for recreation / re-creation. Each of these five dimensions of the Strait’s history was most prominent at a different point in the overall period considered and constantly changing relations among the five narratives are an important focus of the analysis.

Introduction Horna (1994) defines leisure as “an enjoyable experience in which people choose to participate with relative freedom in terms of discretionary time and particular activities, within the context and limitations of culture, and socio-economic factors.” Smith (1994) identified five components that must be present in every leisure experience: (a) a physical element (such as port infrastructure); (b) services; (c) hospitality; (d) individuals having some selection or options; and (e) a sense of involvement or engagement in the act of travel. Based on these criteria, cruise ships, passenger ferries and large yacht destination travel are the main methods of satisfying consumer demand. Since service providers are also a critical element in leisure experiences, this paper will use elements from Miller and Kim’s (2004) work to shed light on the behaviour of port and government tourism officials in the supply-side discussion. The elements requiring consideration include connectivity, hospitality, marketing, infrastructure and environmental sustainability issues. There are no figures that permit a full comparison of the economic impact of each part of the maritime leisure transport sector on the BC economy. A full comparison would include direct impacts arising from vessel, crew and passenger spending. A partial comparison is the average daily consumer and/or trip expenditure (as shown in Table A). These figures provide some insight into one important aspect of the local tourism benefits. Sayward is accessed by Highway 19, the main highway serving the east coast of Vancouver Island from Victoria to Port Hardy, and is 75 kms north of Campbell River. Access to the Village is via the picturesque Sayward Road which offers travelers views of the Salmon River and great opportunities to spot Roosevelt Elk, bear, and other wildlife. Sayward is surrounded by beautiful parks and pristine wilderness. As a designated age friendly community, mobility-accessible parks are a Village priority. Sayward’s convenient location alongside Highway 19 between Campbell River and Port McNeill also makes it a great day trip destination for tourists exploring northern Vancouver Island. Project Background Mary Kelly's trail in the Salmon River Estuary Conservation Area is adjacent to the Village Centre. This trail travels along the Salmon River and estuary, and traverses Mary Kelly’s island which is now part of the Nature Trust of BC’s holdings. This trail was inaccessible for many years as the bridge connecting Sayward and Mary Kelly’s island was in disrepair and unsafe to use. Construction of a new bridge to replace the old decommissioned wooden footbridge on Mary Kelly's trail was an important part of the Village of Sayward’s trail system and tourist attraction plans.
