BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows :- 1. This Act may be cited as the Makara County Act, 1907. Short Title. 2. (1.) The Makara County is hereby constituted, comprising Mm.ra Oounty that portion of the Hutt County particularly described in the First oonstltuted. Schedule hereto, which at the date of the passing of this Act com- prised the Makara and Porirtia Ridings of the Hutt County. (2.) The boundaries of the Hutt County as hereby altered are described in the Second Schedule hereto. 3. The Makara Road District is hereby abolished, and shall be Ma.k~ra Roa.~ deemed to be merged in the Makara County constituted by this Distrlot a.bollshed. Act; and the provisions of section fifty-seven of the Counties Act, 1886, shall be deemed to apply on the date of the coming into opera- tion of this Act as if the said road district had merged into the said Makara County under the provisions of the Counties Act, 18~6. 4.     Northern Suburbs Northern Suburbs Heritage Trail Wellington City Around the Kaiwharawhara Basin This is Part 1 of a two part trail. Part 2 is contained in a separate booklet. This part of the trail will take two to three hours to drive. There is some walking involved as well but it is of a generally easy nature. It features the southern suburbs - Kaiwharawhara, Ngaio, Crofton Downs, Wilton and Wadestown - that largely surround and overlook the Kaiwharawhara Stream. Part 2 follows the Old Porirua Road through Ngaio, Khandallah and Johnsonville, Glenside and Tawa with deviations to Ohariu, Grenada Village, Paparangi and Newlands. The trail finishes at Ngauranga. Everything is so accessible: shops, libraries, parks – they’re all at our doorstep,” says Normandale mother of three, marathon runner and avid book reader Janette Gwilliam. “But best of all, there’s space in this city to breathe. Wellington may claim the cultural crown, but I’ll take the Hutt’s convenience any time.” Janette’s three daughters – two now at school and one a pre-schooler – share her passion for books, so she seldom leaves War Memorial Library or Moera Library with less than a couple of dozen books under her arms – a handy contribution to the more than one million items they lend each year. Janette is delighted at the introduction last year of the SMART card, which allows users to borrow any of up to half a million books, videos and CDs from 23 libraries in the region. “It has opened up a whole new world of reading. It’s especially useful if you’re reading a series and some of the books aren’t in your local library.” Born in Hawke’s Bay, Janette moved south in 1998, settling in a Moera cottage she and her husband only recently sold for a more spacious, modern home in the western hills. Her marathon training (she’s completed two marathons in the past two months) has given her another reason to love the city – she’s discovered off-road Hutt. Joining members of the Hutt Valley Marathon Clinic (“an awesome club”) for regular runs has taken her into the hills, following all manner of out-of-the-way tracks and trails.

Ross has been employed at the Unit since 2015. In this time, he has also presented evidence in the Te Paparahi o Te Raki Inquiry (Wai 1040) on rural rivers, environmental management and the Resource Management Act 1991. More recently, Ross has completed a report for the Military Veterans Inquiry (Wai 2500), entitled ‘Equality and Autonomy: An Overview of Maori Military Service for the Crown, c1899-1945’. Ross has also worked as a research assistant in the Porirua ki Manawatu Inquiry (Wai 2200). Before working at the Tribunal Unit, Ross completed an MA Thesis in History at the University of Auckland which explored the lives of men and women who worked in New Zealand’s freezing works between 1973 and 1994. Ross has published historical articles in the Australasian Journal of American Studies and the New Zealand Labour History Project Bulletin. He is also a member of New Zealand Historical Association, the Professional Historians Association New Zealand and the Labour History Project.
