REAL HOUSEWIVES STAR TAKES ON THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE OF HER LIFE RAISING A SON WITH AUTISM BY DANIELLE DAVIES 2 | The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 Greetings From Atlantic City As many of you are aware, for the last several years I have had the privilege of representing both and Kathy Wakile from Bravo CRIMINAL TV’s Real Housewives of New Jersey and becoming very close with both women and their husbands, Joe and Rich. DEFENSE

We have socialized quite a bit and spent time in one another’s homes and through my association with them I have appeared several times on DWI / TRAFFIC television, as has The Boardwalk Journal.

In social settings, my wife Rebecca and I have had the privilege of meeting FAMILY LAW the other three Housewives, their husbands, their children and many of the peripheral personalities associated with the show, many of whom have been featured in one way or another in The Boardwalk Journal. PERSONAL Everyone I have had the privilege of meeting has always been very nice INJURY to both myself and my wife, including Teresa, and it has always been my belief and understanding that characters can become heroes or villains on Best LegaL services any given Sunday night based upon what takes place in the editing room IMMIGRATION more so than what takes place in real life. - Silver - This is reality TV, but in all reality, it is not always an accurate depiction of who these men and women really are.

One of the sweetest and most down to earth people you could ever meet in this often bizarre world of reality television is Jacqueline Laurita, one of Melissa and Kathy’s television co-star’s on of New Jersey.

Jacqueline was generous with her time and very open with The Boardwalk Journal’s Danielle Davies about her emotional and truly inspirational journey navigating the rough waters of dealing with the many uncertainties that arise when coping with autism.

If you are looking for a Real Housewives of New Jersey tell-all of who gets along with who and who doesn’t, look elsewhere.

This is her story, her reality and I assure you that it is a 100% accurate depiction of who she really is.

Another amazing and very accomplished woman you will read about in this issue is Deana Martin, the daughter of the legendary Dean Martin.

Deana gave our Felicia Lowenstein Niven unfettered access into her fascinating world as she takes a trip down memory lane, remembering her late father and his Rat Pack brethren, and a glimpse of what to expect JAMES J. LEONARD JR., ESq. when she comes to Caesars on May 31st as part of an evening honoring her father presented by the Schultz-Hill Foundation.

Last, but certainly not least, the very accomplished Danielle Gomes gives our readers an insight into the history and day-to-day operations of Brigantine’s Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

Danielle has recently written a book honoring her late father, casino legend Dennis Gomes entitled Hit Me: Fighting the Las Vegas Mob by the Numbers and is the real story behind the notorious Stardust Skim, which served as the backdrop for Martin Scorsese’s epic film Casino.

Her book is available for pre-order on Amazon.com, as is the aforementioned Real Housewives Melissa Gorga’s book, Love Italian Style: The Secrets of My Hot and Happy Marriage. Of course, if we are plugging books, you can read all about my very Attorneys At LAw interesting / intimidating encounter with notorious Atlantic City mob hit man Philip Leonetti in his book Mafia Prince: Inside America’s Most Violent Crime Family and The Bloody Fall of La Cosa Nostra, which is also available 1200 AtLAntic Avenue on Amazon.com.

page 6 SWEENEY: ON THE MONEY ABOUT REVEL, ATLANTIC CITY Never one to mince words, Senate President Steve Sweeney called it straight several months back when he said that the long struggling Revel needed new management and he hit it out of the park last year when he said of Atlantic City: “The city needs leadership. The city needs to get things done.” While neither prophecy will spark a comparison between Sweeney and Nostradamus, Sweeney’s blunt and succinct analysis of Atlantic City’s woes is a breath of fresh air from the usual line up of our local talking heads whose own analysis and often misguided optimism regarding what is really going on is more akin to rearranging the deck SENATE PRESIDENT NOSTRADAMUS chairs on the Titanic. Now Available www.boardwalkjournal.com at Atlantic County The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 | 7 The legendary Philadelphia Magazine, which we have always respected and often sought to emulate, has come under fire recently following a controversial March cover story entitled “Being White in Philly”, which was blasted by Philly Mayor Michael Nutter and panned by critics alike. If this was a foul ball, Philly Mag definitely struck out in its April issue when an article about a marine sniper entitled “The War Within” was revealed to be a fabrication and the magazine took the step of “unpublishing” the story and issuing an apology, admitting that they “blew it” after being duped by the dubious subject of the story. For our money, they should also issue an apology for the thinly veiled hit piece they did on South Jersey magnate George Norcross, who has in the past and continues to perform wonders for the severely impoverished City of Camden and most recently has lent his support to its long forgotten school children. Atlantic City would be lucky if Mr. Norcross decided to land his helicopter in our neck of the woods…

Atlantic City has long been a stomping ground for gangsters dating back to the historic summit of organized crime leaders who converged on The Boardwalk in 1929 for the now infamous Atlantic City Conference. At the time, it was cigar chomping mob elites like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello who came to town to work and play. Decades later, Atlantic City was home to notorious mob boss Nicodemo “Little Nicky” Scarfo and his nephew Philip “Crazy Phil” Leonetti who lived on Georgia Avenue in the city’s Ducktown section. In the early 90’s, Salvatore “Sammy The Bull” Gravano even used Atlantic City as a hide-out while ducking the FBI in New York who sought to arrest him in the case that ultimately brought down mob boss John Gotti. But when rumors began to circulate that Irish mob boss Whitey Bulger, who was #2 on the FBI’s Most Wanted List behind Osama Bin Laden, may have been lamming it in our area, many ears perked up as a hefty $2 million reward was out there for anyone who could bring Bulger to the FBI. Reported local sightings of Bulger began to circulate and reports were that the mob legend was spending his time on the golf course. Fast forward to April 2013 and the infamous Whitey Bulger was now behind bars in a Massachusetts lock-up after being captured in Santa Monica, California which by all accounts is a far cry from Atlantic City, but the rumors of Bulger being in our area persisted. How could this be? Did Whitey utilize a body double like Saddam Hussein? The Boardwalk Journal decided to hunt for this mysterious figure and low and behold, we found him at of all places, the Mays Landing Golf and Country Club wearing a black leather jacket and a head full of white hair neatly combed back. Sure enough, this imposing figure bore a striking resemblance to the infamous Bulger. It was none other than Doug Fraser, the Vice President of The Mays Landing Golf and Country Club. Case closed.

James “Whitey” Bulger Doug “Whitey” Fraser

Speaking of cases … As the one year anniversary of April Kauffman’s mysterious (or not so mysterious) death approaches, well-placed sources have suggested that the investigation into her murder is by no means a cold case and that investigators remain diligent in their efforts to bring her cowardly killer / killers to justice. Stay tuned to this story, it is far from over … 8 | The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 SSaaiinntt JJuuddiitthh CChhaarrtteerrss

The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 | 9 hello my name is Diane Mitchell DIANE MITCHELL, co-host of the Mike & Diane Morning Show on 95.1 WAYV

Hello, my name is Diane Mitchell, reports will be juicy! I’m proud to say that I know most of what there is to know about celebrities—yes, I’m obsessed! I can tell you co-host of the Mike & Diane Morning Show on 95.1 WAYV. When their ages, who they’re married to and the names and ages of their I introduce myself to people, many of them react with the same kids. This is “research” for me, watching as many TV shows as I predictable responses. “Oh, are you the one on the back of the can, reading every magazine I can get my hands on and seeing the bus?”, “I listen to you every morning” or “What is Mike really like?” most popular movies—it’s hard work, but somebody has to do it! But the majority of listeners almost always ask, “What is it like to host your own radio show?” It’s probably not what you think… 3…2…1…the ON AIR light is flashing and Mike opens the show at 5:30AM. We take listener calls and play them back on the air There’s really no such thing as a “typical” day in radio—you never while monitoring social media. At the same time we execute prize know what the morning will bring. However, most of them start giveaways and post most of what we discussed on Facebook and out the same way. I wake up to two alarms at 3:30AM (yes, I have Twitter, while interspersing it all with Today’s Best Hits. After a back-up, just in case.) In my younger years, that was about the the show is wrapped, I hop into the production studio to voice time I was going to sleep! I splash water on my face and put on my commercials and conduct celebrity interviews that we’ve lined up. “uniform”—yoga pants, a hoodie and UGGS (in the summer I wear flip flops, even though it’s against company policy—the “Suit and By 11am, I’m finally in the clear—or so I think. On this particular day Tie Boss” doesn’t like the clip-clop sound.) My hair goes up—forget I have headphones, purse and coat in hand and I try to sneak out about makeup at that hour of the morning. I justify this by saying the back door. But, “Suit and Tie Boss” sees me out of the corner of that going makeup free during the week helps my skin! I grab a his eye and waves me over. He’s schmoozing a new client and the granola bar….okay, that sounded good, but in reality it’s probably minute I hear him, I know exactly what he’s talking about—the 1997 a Hershey bar to satisfy my inner chocoholic. Plus, I need the story of when he first hired Mike and I. His voice is getting louder caffeine because I don’t drink coffee. I know, hosting a morning as I walk closer. show without coffee is unheard of! “I used to listen to Mike & Diane on a small station in Monmouth I warm up my voice in the privacy of my own car on the way to County in the mid 90s. Did she put blush and mascara on this early? they used to broadcast from. If I kept driving, I’d lose them. I was Then I remind myself, “no, Diane, that’s just what 19 year olds look riveted by their chemistry, frivolity and mischievousness; and like, naturally.” Casey informs me of any celebrity interviews that intoxicated by Diane’s laugh! They were just so spontaneous and are scheduled and fills me in on hot news headlines. She also tells entertaining! Anyway, there’s Mike, well-dressed and well-caffeinated as usual. government, not to mention the daily negotiating he needed Dave Davidson Jr. with criminals just to get home in one piece—and a staunch supporter of the one thing he thinks is missing in Atlantic City right now: common sense.

“The basic practice of understanding the principal of common sense seems to be void in city hall,” Davidson said, continuing, “There has been a failure in exercising common sense...the reality of things happening around us is hard to ignore...crime is high in Atlantic City. It’s not a perceptual problem. It’s a reality.”

As a local resident and lifelong police officer, Davidson is privy to a unique perspective—he has first-hand knowledge of the underbelly of Atlantic City and is determined to clean it up. “Only 12 uniformed officers are not enough in Chelsea,” Davidson said, describing his goal of cleaning up crime. “You can’t talk about new revenue or lowering tax rates until the streets are cleaned. From that, everything else grows.”

And Davidson, like other police officers, relies on the results of action as a necessity. “As a cop, you are results oriented, or you will die...the same abilities you use on the street are the ones that get you home,” citing negotiation, preparation, and common sense as the must-haves in police work as well as politics.

In addition to combatting crime, Davidson is interested in the restoration of goodwill and respect between the community and the police department. “There is a gap, and it needs to be restored,” Davidson said, explaining that the lack of respect from city officials translates to a lack of fear from criminals. “Double homicides used to happen late at night in dark alleys, now they are happening in broad daylight.”

Originally boasting two dining rooms in the restaurant, after the most current addition of space—a wall was knocked down to extend the restaurant—Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar has plenty of space. With a relaxing ambience—colors of soothing chocolate brown, white and wedgewood gray grace the interior—the space is available, and perfect for, weddings and parties with a dance floor and stage area. And though the restaurant is beautiful and serves upscale cuisine, the vibe is decidedly low-key. “We want people to know they can come in on their way home from the beach,” explained Joanne Liccio. In fact, the Liccio’s extend their winter happy hour into the summer, hosting a ‘Bikini Happy Hour’ from 4 to 6 every day.

Open seven days a week, year round, Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus as well as a wide range of fun martinis (think Cherry Cheesecake and Lemon Basil martinis), entertainment, and a pianist every night.

The Johnny’s Café & Martini menu is extensive. Breakfast includes standard fare like omelets, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes and waffles, but almost everything as a non-traditional alternative. From a lump crab, Swiss cheese and hollandaise omelet to orange marmalade and cream cheese French toast, Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar isn’t afraid to experiment.

Lunch is no different. Full of healthy salads and sandwich options, as well as a few platters, Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar offers up several mouth-watering options. Sandwich selections include the filet mignon cheesesteak with gorgonzola cheese and a spicy spread as well as the portabella mushroom sandwich with fresh mozzarella cheese with pesto mayonnaise. Salad options include Classic Caesar, a wedge salad, and a grilled salmon salad.

And while breakfast and lunch at Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar are popular, it is the dinner menu that truly shines. The menu leans heavily toward Italian fare but has enough variety to suit everyone’s taste. House specials recommended by Johnny himself are the Trip Tails… three lobster tails stuffed with crabmeat and served with smoked bacon creamed corn ($39.95), Seafood Pescatore…calamari, lobster, shrimp, scallops, mussels and crab served over spaghetti with a choice of red, white, or Diablo sauce ($34.95), Cold Lobster Platter…1/2 lobster cooked and served chilled with jumbo shrimp and colossal crabmeat served with mango salsa ($33.95), Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass served over sweet mashed potatoes with a balsamic reduction ($36.95) and the 15 ounce Grilled Veal Chop topped with Chorizo sauce ($42.95).

From an ice cream parlor to a full service restaurant and a steak shop, the Liccios have made their mark on the Margate community. Whether you’re visiting Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar or John’s Steaks, you’re sure to enjoy dining with them this summer.

Actor Minnie Driver once said, “Celebrity is a weird appendage, which is useless unless you do something with it.”

For Jacqueline Laurita, one of the original cast members on the wildly popular reality show, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, knowing what to do with that celebrity wasn’t always clear. “I always wondered what my purpose was on our drama filled show,” explained Laurita, continuing “I never felt the urgency to push products or insert myself in the media celebrity...I felt like I just went through the

motions without a purpose.” The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 | 35 The diagnosis she received last summer for her son changed going on with Nicholas, she did have some experience with all that. Laurita, married for more than 11 years to her and knowledge of autism. When her older son, CJ, was little, husband Chris, (who is also the brother of another original his shyness prompted his then preschool teacher to suggest cast member, ), has three children: 22 year he may be on the spectrum. Though she didn’t know it at the time, she was already becoming an autism advocate. “My son’s diagnosis gave me a purpose, a mission, and RHONJ gave me the platform to do some good, to raise Although armed with only scant information about autism, awareness and to make a difference. Though Laurita, a fan favorite on RHONJ, is relatively new Laurita brought her concerns to her pediatrician, who to the world of autism, she has spent much of the last year referred Laurita to a developmental pediatrician for educating herself, and those around her, about the realities testing after Nicholas hardly acknowledged her presence and misconceptions about autism. After all, it wasn’t when she entered the examining room. While waiting for very long ago when she was the one clamoring for more that appointment, the Laurita’s visited two DAN! (Defeat information. Autism Now!) Doctors, one in Irvine, California and one in Middletown, NJ. (“DAN! Doctors are trained in the ‘DAN! “I wanted to be handed a map from A to Z of what I needed Protocol’ an approach to autism treatment which starts with to do to recover my child, but there is no such map,” Laurita said of hearing the diagnosis. “The autism spectrum is so wide and each child needs to be treated individually.”

Although Laurita felt she needed more information, she had already taken the formidable step of getting a diagnosis. Though parents are often the first to notice their child “showing unusual behaviors,” according to Autism Speaks, “doctors unfamiliar with diagnosing autism sometimes dismiss parent concerns, delaying diagnosis and the opportunity for early intervention therapies.”

For Laurita, those signs began to surface when Nicholas was between 18.5 months to 2 years of age. “Nick was not advancing in his milestones as quickly as his cousin who is 2 weeks younger,” Laurita shared. “He also seemed to be regressing. It was very gradual. As a mother, you just know...you sense it.”

The signs were heartbreaking. Nicholas wouldn’t answer to his name when called. He couldn’t follow Laurita’s finger as she pointed to an object. He seemed to tune out the people and the world around him. Along with being unable to follow simple commands, he was regressing. He had a loss of language, and stopped singing his favorite songs and using utensils. Beyond that, sometimes his eyes would go to the side and he would start spinning in circles. He would go upside down a lot. His interests were specific and limited. Instead of being interested in the people around him, Nicholas would spend a lot of time lining up his toys and focusing on the credits from his favorite TV shows.

Though Laurita didn’t know exactly what was Nicholas 36 | The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 the idea that autism is a biomedical disorder” according to About.com. While there have been criticisms of DAN! Doctors by the mainstream medical community because of their unconventional treatment methods, according to AustismKey.com, there are many, many instances of children and adults with autism improving from the use of DAN biomedical treatments.)

Nicholas underwent blood tests—to confirm first that there was nothing genetically wrong with him, and then for food allergies and intolerances, and to see what supplements he was lacking in his body. He was also, during his diagnosis, tested through hair, stool, and urine as part of biomedical testing. As a result, Nicholas began the Gluten Free/Casein Free diet (GFCF diet), one of “several alternative treatments for children with autism” according to WebMD, “based on the theory that children with autism have an allergy or high sensitivity to foods containing gluten or casein.” Though considered ‘alternative,’ it’s fair to note that it is increasingly common and recommended by those on the frontlines of autism—parents—who anecdotally report behavior improvements.

Laurita was one of those parents. Once Nicholas began the GFCF diet, the Lauritas did notice improvements. By the time of their appointment with the developmental pediatrician, Laurita admits that “a part of me was hoping the doctor would tell me it wasn’t autism, even though I knew in my heart that it was.” Unfortunately, Laurita’s instincts were right—Nicholas has autism.

“I remember feeling sad, choked up, fearful of the future, lost, not knowing where to go, what to do or who to talk to first. I felt scared for Autism Advocates / Mother Warriors Jenny my son’s future. I cried a lot,” Laurita shared. “I went home and cried McCarthy and Jacqueline Laurita with my husband until I couldn’t cry anymore. The next day, I started my yearlong obsession with researching everything I could find on autism and seeking out the right team of people to help my son. It’s become my mission.”

America And so began Laurita’s quest to help not just her own son, but the autism community. Besides using her large social media platform—Laurita is a contributing editor for Parenting magazine and has an online blog on their website as well as her own at www.jaquelinelaurita.com—to raise awareness and educate people with as much information as possible, Laurita is continuing to share her family’s journey, with the inclusion of autism, on the Real Housewives of New Jersey. “Being on RHONJ brings many viewers into my world and (offers) a chance for me to show people what it’s like as a parent to cope with a diagnosis,” Laurita said. “My family is sharing our journey with others. I hope I don’t disappoint. I’m only human. North I mages / Getty McGregor Mike C redit: I’m learning and growing as I go. We all are.”

That’s not all. Laurita has been busy, both connecting with other mothers involved in autism advocacy, including Areva Martin, Dawn Neufield, Holly Robinson Peete, Jenny McCarthy, Jody Gomes and Maura West, hoping to help raise awareness, as well as implementing and participating in local initiatives during April’s Autism Awareness Month. From the simple act of wearing a blue hair extension for the month of April (Cafface, a beauty bar in Franklin Lakes owned by Laurita’s niece, Lauren Manzo, is having an April promotion— blue hair extensions—with proceeds going to Autism Unites Us of Bergen County), to attending events and sitting on panels (the Lauritas will be part of a conference panel at the Generation Rescue/Autism One conference in May), Laurita is doing everything she can think of to help spread the word.

It’s a family affair. Chris Laurita is the president and CEO of BLK Beverages, and is launching an initiative in which a portion of the proceeds from every bottle of BLK sold Jacqueline and husband Chris on the red carpet The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 | 37 from April 1 until December 31, 2013, goes to Generation Rescue.

The Lauritas have come a long way from where they were last summer. Laurita admits, “I am TV Bravo much more educated now on autism than I used to be. I wasn’t as emotionally attached before it became so close to me. It’s hard to understand it fully unless you are connected to it.”

And Laurita is nothing if not connected to her son and autism. Nicholas is involved in an array of therapies, from occupational therapy, applied behavioral analysis, speech and language, physical therapy, behavioral therapy, and life skills during his six hours a day in a specialized preschool classroom with an IEP (individualized education plan). After school, depending on the day, Nicholas gets added ABA therapy, speech and language, music therapy, and gymnastics. In addition, Nicholas—at both home and school—uses a PECS system, a picture exchange communication system that helps him communicate his needs and encourages language. The Laurita’s continue to provide Nicholas with a GFCF diet as well as providing him with hyperbaric oxygen therapy and supplements. “All the therapies work together and offer him something different to help him,” Laurita explained. “I think my son enjoys and responds very well to music though.”

If it seems that Laurita is throwing everything she can at autism in an effort to help her son, The Real Housewife you’re right. But cure it? “I don’t say cure, I say recover,” Laurita explained. “I fight to bring him back to the progress he was making in his developmental milestones before he started regressing. I don’t think my child is sick, I think he is brilliant. I just think he learns differently than typical kids

do. I don’t want to change who he is, Magazine People I want to enhance who he is. I want to find his gifts and nurture them and help them to grow. I want to bring out the best child that my child can be and if I can give my child the proper tools now to help make his life easier for him in the future than that is what I am going to do.”

Part of that comes with educating people. “I have a list of famous, very successful people that have autism that most people would be really surprised to hear,” Laurita said. “I want people to be more educated on that and have a deeper understanding of what autism is so The Mother they can have more empathy towards 38 | The Boardwalk Journal | April 2013 them and realize that they are just like everyone else. They just have a harder time expressing their thoughts.”

It’s a struggle that many families hope to rectify. At the Autism Shines website, pictures and descriptions of aurita.com kids with autism are posted in just such an effort. Each picture has a description like, “Meet Charlie...he loves drawing, Legos and trucks. He loves unconditionally and L Jacqueline can light up a room with his smile. This is autism.”

As Laurita says of Nicholas, “Autism is just a small piece of who he is...My son is a very loving, affectionate little boy. He loves hugs and kisses. He is very smart...my hopes for my son are the same as any mother would want for her child. I want him to be accepted for who he is, graduate from college, be able to live independently, hold a job, have a career, communicate and build relationships with others, fall in love, get married, have children.”

And just like with her hopes, Laurita’s fears for her son Jacqueline with fellow Real Housewives of New are like those of any mother, “I worry that he won’t Jersey stars Caroline Manzo, Melissa Gorga be able to do all of the above. I worry about him being and Kathy Wakile bullied one day. I worry about what would happen to him if something happened to me and I couldn’t be there for him.”

Fortunately, both Nicholas and Laurita are surrounded by a supportive network of family and friends. “Having everyone working on the same page helps a lot,” Laurita said. Laurita has educated those surrounding her son, explaining autism to those who weren’t familiar with it. In return, her extended family has been extremely supportive. “They give each of my kids the time and attention they need individually...they are respectful of Nick’s diet and schedule,” Laurita shared.

While it’s been said that having an autistic child can create family tensions in WebMD among many other autism resource sites—from sibling resentment to strained marriages—Laurita has found that, “As far as family goes, it has brought us all closer together.” Adding, “My husband and I are completely on the same page. We have a common mission to recover Nicholas and raise awareness. We each established our individual roles in the beginning after his diagnosis.”

As for Nicholas’s siblings, they “didn’t

If it seems like every time you turn around, you’re hearing about another child From being diagnosed with autism, you’re right. The newest statistics are staggering: 1 in 88 children, and 1 in 54 boys, is diagnosed with autism, commonly thought of as a “complex disorder of brain development” according to Autism Speaks.

While increasingly prevalent, autism is alarmingly misunderstood. Never was that clearer than in the days following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, when media outlets nationwide falsely linked autism with planned violence. Hamburgers The thing that makes autism awareness so difficult, and therefore so necessary, is that it varies from person to person. While autism is, according to Wikipedia, “characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior”, there is no “one-sized-fits-all” diagnosis, or treatment. Sometimes, autism can be associated with an intellectual disability; other times it is associated with genius. Some on the spectrum seem removed from the world around them; others can explain to you in very clear terms the pattern our world makes up in the universe. There is confusion even among those involved in the autism community— some seek a cure for autism, while others dispute the idea of autism being a disorder at all, preferring it to be considered a difference. Spend your comps all over South Jersey If I’m not making much sense, or if these things seem too different to be considered part of the same diagnosis, then you’re catching on.

THE KING OF COOL’S DAUGHTER DEANA MARTIN

By Felicia Lowenstein Niven

Deana Martin caught the acting ‘bug’ at just six years old. That’s when Judy Garland knelt down and told Dean Martin’s daughter that she was the best tree she had ever seen.

The play was performed at Judy Garland’s home on Mapleton Drive in Holmby Hills, an affluent neighborhood in western Los Angeles. The impromptu cast assembled that day included Deana’s older sisters and Judy’s daughter Liza.

“When I think back to all of the famous people who were naturally part of my life, because of my dad, it is pretty amazing,” said Deana. “But at the time, they were all regular folks, very friendly and down-to-earth.”

The “who’s who” of Hollywood that regularly assembled around the Martin family kitchen table was indeed impressive. “Imagine Rosemary Clooney at Christmas time singing, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” said Deana. “Or joking around with Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Shirley MacLaine, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Lucille Ball. And Doris Day with that gorgeous voice! How she looked in those films was actually how she looked all the time; she would ride around dressed in yellow. I grew up in an amazing community of family friends.”

Deana also was surrounded by a talented, and theatrical, family. “All of the Martin’s are a bit of a ‘ham’,” she admitted. “It was lots of fun when we all got together.”

Deana had “the luxury,” as she describes it, of taking tap dancing, piano and acrobatic lessons as she grew up. But singing was one lesson that wasn’t on the list, at least at first. Her father didn’t want her to sound like a member of the choir. That’s when she turned to the ‘Chairman of the Board,’ ‘the Sultan of Swoon,’ a.k.a. Old Blue Eyes.

“I had admired Uncle Frank for so long, and I remember at age 16, asking him how he gets that great tone,” said Deana. “So he sat me down and explained about breathing, singing from your diaphragm and so forth. He told me that he knew, even before a note came out, if he was going to be on pitch. So I asked, ‘Does my dad do that?’ Frank smiled and said, ‘No. He has no idea what he’s doing. He just does it. ’That was what was so amazing about Dean Martin,” acknowledged Deana. “My dad would just sing. He made it look so effortless.”

The singing lessons must have worked because Deana had a hit single at age 16. Written by Lee Hazlewood of These Boots are Made for Walking fame, Deana’s Girl of the Month Club became a radio favorite. She headed to Nashville to do some television, including Music City USA.

Sammy Davis, Jr. Milton Berle. The list goes on and on. Its doors opened at 5 p.m. and closed at 10 a.m. with shows around the clock.

Long since an Atlantic City memory, the 500 Club will live again, at least in the eyes of Gary Hill, co-founder of the Schultz-Hill Foundation. The Foundation’s annual benefit, scheduled for May 31, 2013, will feature 500 Club regular Dean Martin’s daughter Deana, singing her father’s songs in Atlantic City just as he had a half century ago.

“We had to have it at Caesars,” said Gary. “It’s address is 500 Club Lane. Then of course, here is the daughter of one of the legends of America. Deana is bringing back the American songbook, not only her dad’s music but his contemporaries. For many people who remember the 500 Club, this is going to be very exciting.”

“When Gary reached out to us about the concert, it was a very quick conversation,” said Kevin Ortzman, senior vice president and general manager for Caesars, Bally’s and Showboat. “We were very excited to host it. My parents and grandparents were big fans of Dean Martin, and we anticipate many of our guests are as well. The historical connection was one reason Hill courted Deana for over a year. “We met through mutual friends,” said Gary. “Michael Feinstein had performed at our inaugural event, and Deana was performing at Feinstein’s at the Regency in New York. It was a year of relationship building, looking at schedules, and seeing what we could work out.”

“I loved that it was being held at Caesars,” said Deana. “At the beginning of my career, I played Caesars Palace in Vegas. Since then, I’ve been back to Atlantic City many times. But I never had a chance until now to play Caesars again.”

Deana is excited to be singing in front of a full orchestra, which isn’t very common anymore. She promises a loving tribute to her dad and his contemporaries, including a duet that she’ll sing with a video of him.

“We’re debuting the video, which is taken from home movies and photos,” she said. “My husband found the original handwritten arrangement of True Love, one of the finest ever written. It touches the soul in a way that I can’t describe. I hope that I don’t cry.”

The benefit is scheduled for Friday, May 31, at 8:30 p.m. in The Circus Maximus Theater at Caesars Casino & Hotel in Atlantic City. Tickets for the show are priced at $45 and $60. For $200, patrons can get VIP seating and enjoy a meet-and-greet with Deana after the show. Tickets are available through Ticketron and the Caesars box office. Because the performance is a benefit, tickets are tax-deductible.

Hill hopes the varied prices will help bring people out. He is looking forward to the reaction of the crowd when Deana takes the stage.

“I’m really just going to be looking the Atlantic City shimmer in people’s eyes,” said Gary. “They’ll be reliving the Rat Pack days. And it’s going to be extraordinary.”

Following an injury sustained in the war, Schoelkopf was taken to a Philadelphia Naval Hospital. He quickly tired of the recuperation process and took a nighttime job at an aquarium around the corner from the hospital, called The Aquarama Aquarium Theater of the Sea. It was a special place for marine life lovers as it was part aquarium and part circus. Aquarama’s performers included their porpoises and pilot whales whom were housed in the aquarium’s large tanks. Schoelkopf’s job was to clean the tanks at night, and in a short time he learned he had a true penchant for this line of work, playing with the animals whenever he could. Soon, Schoelkopf was promoted to animal trainer and in 1969, the owner of Aquarama moved the operation to the boardwalk in Atlantic City. But we can never count on that because we don’t know what’s coming in or the number or volume of animals that are going to be alive versus dead.”

When forced to consider what the impact would be if the MMSC were to close, Schoelkopf stated that there, “would be a lot of animals lying on the beach slowly dying or people deciding that they would take the animals home for treatment to have them die there and the people get bit in the process.” This is a dangerous prospect for both the sea life and the people who may come into contact with these injured animals. Although these animals look cute and cuddly, they are anything but—the seals in particular. When a seal is injured and stranded on the beach, it is important to remember that they too are very scared. As such, it is likely that this animal will bite and cause damage to those who may try to approach it. Furthermore, these animals may be sick and could easily spread diseases. So, how can you help?

That’s easy! First, keep our beaches clean. That means dealing with your trash even when you’re not near a beach, because improperly disposed garbage often finds its way to the ocean through run-off drains. Second, visit the Marine Mammal Stranding Center and learn about their work first-hand. You can even adopt a seal! For a $25 donation, you will receive an adoption certificate, photograph, and the story of a seal your donation helped. By adopting a seal, you can help pay for the food and medications these animals need. Third, support the MMSC by attending their various fundraising events.

“You have helped me understand that being diagnosed with diabetes does not mean I cannot continue to enjoy eating out with friends.”

“You provided us with contacts for community resources, and we were able to find the care our mom needed be able to stay in her home of 50 years.”

“I understand how and why I need to read food labels. It is not work anymore; it is a way of life for me.”

People throughout our community are responding with great enthusiasm to a novel approach to primary medical care — the “patient-centered medical home” (PCMH) — now in practice at AtlantiCare Physician Group (APG) Primary Care Plus offices. More than 25 primary care prac- tices in the area have adopted AtlantiCare’s Primary Care Plus model of care, which features timely appointments, electronic medical records, and a commitment to connecting and coordinating everyone involved in your care.

What is a Medical hoMe? The medical home is a relatively new healthcare delivery model that is being rapidly adopted throughout the nation. It is a team-based, coordi- nated outpatient care approach that is accessible and affordable, and contributes to higher-quality patient care.

Under this model, your primary care provider’s (PCP) office will become your “home base” for your total health and well-being throughout your lifetime. Your PCP will give you the support and resources to help you live a healthier lifestyle. You will take advantage of annual preventive care visits, appropriate health screenings, and extra help managing any chronic conditions you may have.

Your PCP also will coordinate any specialty care you might need and will be in regular communication with those specialists so everyone in- volved in your care is informed and connected.

Being Patient centered One goal of the medical home is for it to be “patient centered.” Although healthcare professionals at AtlantiCare always have put a priority on patient care, medical homes are more intentionally focused on your overall care experience, satisfaction, and outcomes.

Mitchell Kaminski, MD, medical director, AtlantiCare Physician Group Primary Care and Medical Specialties, explains one way this can play out in a medical home.

“When a sick person calls for an appointment, she shouldn’t be asked, ‘How sick are you feeling?’ to determine when she will be seen,” says Dr. Kaminski. “The patient should be able to get the access to care she needs when she feels she needs it. If a person with diabetes needs to meet with his healthcare team, he should be able to come in at a time that doesn’t conflict with his work schedule.”

Patients aren’t the only ones who benefit from the medical home model. Overall healthcare costs are also reduced. For instance, one of the most costly diseases to manage is diabetes. Christeen Cornell, RN, BSN, CCM, director of Clinical Transformation, AtlantiCare, gives an ex- ample of how a medical home can not only help a diabetes patient, but help contain costs.

“There is a tremendous amount of care coordination involved with patients who have diabetes,” says Cornell. “People with diabetes often need to see multiple specialists, and have tests and preventive procedures. In the medical home model, our nurse care managers help coordinate their care. Our goal is to manage care in a proactive manner so patients get the necessary preventive care. Ultimately, this means they go to the hospital less often and have fewer complications, which also means fewer healthcare dollars are spent caring for that person.” leveraging technology Medical homes are expected to rely on electronic medical records (EMRs), as well as other national accreditation technology to deliver the highest-quality care most affordably. for Quality

AtlantiCare uses this technology to enhance communication among caregivers and with our AtlantiCare is in the process of acquiring the National patients. Carmen Marotta and his wife Nancy went to a local premier with a half dozen others, some of whom were extras in the movie who wanted to see if they made the cut. There are some memorable scenes, including those of the Ocean City beach and the band practicing on the roof, with Dolfin Dock and the Clam Bar visible across Bay Avenue.

But as a movie, Eddie and the Cruisers was not well received by critics, as Roger Ebert gave the film two out of four stars and said, “the ending is so frustrating, so dumb, so unsatisfactory, that it gives a bad reputation to the whole movie”.

A week after the movie came out it was gone and everybody seemed to have forgotten about it, but then, nearly a year later, the movie’s soundtrack and three songs from the film suddenly made the pop charts.
