a full service litigation firm when results matter Greetings From Atlantic City I am very humbled and excited that we are presenting to you this month the 50th edition of The Boardwalk Journal, a compilation of sorts that celebrates our greatest hits and misses since our launch back in 2009. To prepare for this issue, I undertook the task of personally going through each of our previous 49 issues, all 3,136 pages, as well as our digital archives, which include stories and photographs that never made it to print. What is contained in this month’s cover spread is in essence a trip down memory lane, highlighting what I believe were the highlights of each issue. Best LegaL services Going back to our October 2009 issue, I am happy that we had the foresight to feature Chris Christie on our - Silver - cover before he became our Governor. I have to give Don Hurley credit for pleading with me to do this cover, telling me to trust him that we wouldn’t regret it. I trusted Don and two years later when the now Governor Chris Christie was featured on our cover a second time in October 2011, he personally thanked me—at the Sandi Pointe Inn in Somers Point at a Republican fundraising event—for taking a chance on him.

Our August 2011 cover with Real Housewives of New Jersey star Melissa Gorga was the first of many magazine covers for her, and later got The Boardwalk Journal significant airtime on the same cable television show watched by millions of people.

Subsequent Housewives covers, featuring Kathy Wakile and her family in November 2011 and Jacqueline Laurita in April 2012, were so popular that our web server almost crashed when their loyal legions of Twitter followers came to www.boardwalkjournal.com to read the issues. James J. Leonard Jr., esq.

George Anastasia, a New York Times Best Selling Author and one of my favorite writers, was responsible for our Nicky Scarfo/Philip Leonetti inspired mob cover in November 2012 as well as last month’s cover, which pulled no punches on exactly why and how Atlantic City has found itself in its current predicament. I do believe—with some of the things that we are currently working on at The Boardwalk Journal—that, like the late great Frank Sinatra, who is featured on our September 2011 cover, once said: “The Best is Yet To Come…” Here is to our next 50 issues. Now Available We’ve Got The Jersey Shore Covered at Atlantic County The Boardwalk Journal | June 2013 | 7 As Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo T. Langford celebrates his recent victory in the 2013 Democratic Primary and prepares for what some believe will be his final four years in office, speculation is already mounting as to who will emerge as his heir apparent should he decide to step down at the end of 2017, when, God willing, the then 61 year old Langford will have endured, survived and prospered during a turbulent quarter century of chaos in the tumultuous world of Atlantic City politics. Despite all of that, there are—by our count—no less than six names that come up every time the topic of “Who will succeed Langford” is discussed:

1. Former Atlantic City PBA President Dave Davidson. The 51 year old Davidson has already confirmed that he is running again in 2017. Despite finishing in third place in this year’s primary—Davidson received slightly more than a third of the total votes that Langford got, in spite of having very little name recognition and virtually no money or street team. If Davidson can improve on all three fronts, he definitely stands a chance in 2017.

2. Councilman At-Large Moises “Mo” Delgado. The 43 year old Delgado was the top vote getter in a crowded field of candidates for Council At—Large and with a rapidly growing Hispanic population, Delgado could be the city’s first Hispanic Mayor, should he choose to run.

3. Councilman At-Large Frank Gilliam. The 43 year old Gilliam was the second highest vote getter in the aforementioned Council At-Large race and currently serves as the Vice President of City Council. Often seen standing side by side with Langford, it has been speculated by many that Langford views Gilliam as a devoted and loyal soldier and may be grooming him as his eventual successor.

4. Second Ward Councilman Marty Small. The 39 year old Small has more name recognition than Davidson, Delgado and Gilliam combined, but Small remains unproven as a viable city wide candidate following the shellacking he took at the hands of the Langford, Gilliam, Delgado and Tibbitt ticket in the very ugly 2009 Primary. Say what you want about Marty Small, but he is the embodiment of the word resilient and just as the referee reaches the number 9, Small miraculously returns to his feet before the fatal ten count is tolled.

5. Atlantic County Freeholder Chairman Frank Formica. The 61 year old Formica, already the unofficial “Mayor of Ducktown”, turned a lot of heads when he recently moved back into Atlantic City and many have speculated that Formica did so because he has his eye on becoming the Mayor of Atlantic City. If Formica were to run, he would certainly be well funded and add a unique dynamic to the race.

6. First Lady Nynell Langford. The 30 something year old (we are sticking with that) wife of the Atlantic City Mayor epitomizes grace, humility and compassion, something that is certainly lacking amongst the aforementioned political animals. With the embodiment of those precious and very rare commodities, and the support of her husband’s very loyal political base, Mrs. Langford could absolutely become the city’s first female Mayor should she choose to run. Hey, Oscar Goodman’s wife Carolyn succeeded him as the Mayor of Las Vegas and when 2017 rolls around the country will be talking about former First Lady Hillary Clinton for President, so don’t rule out our First Lady.

No matter who chooses to run in 2017, our vote is always for the great Willie Norwood …“No Malice.” 8 | The Boardwalk Journal | June 2013 The Beach Bar at Bally's is back ...

Though Mento came from a musically appreciative family—his mother was a huge opera fan and his father studied violin before serving in WWII—his dad didn’t think it was a good idea. “He thought I should go into something like pharmacy or engineering,” said Mento. Unfazed, Mento went to Delaware and was followed, a year later, by his sister Loretta Mento, who also studied piano.

Mento foresaw a career in teaching piano at a university level. And as anyone attempting to procure a job in academia knows, it’s an extremely competitive world and almost impossible without a substantial education under your belt. And so, Mento continued his own education, receiving his Master’s Degree from Temple University and ultimately, his Doctorate from University of South Carolina.

Since then, Mento has performed locally with the Bay-Atlantic Symphony—for which he wrote an orchestral work that premiered at Stockton College—as well as both Carnegie and Merkin Halls, among many others. He has also served as an adjunct musical faculty professor at both Stockton College and Burlington County College, and along with his sister, Loretta Mento, with whom he often partners as part of Duo Mento, has recorded with Eroica, a classical music label. Most recently, Mento has worked to get a Pandora station. Loretta already has one, and the stations for Duo Mento and Steven Mento as a solo pianist will be available in the next few weeks.

Ironically, though poised to become university professor, Mento got involved in real estate in 2005, becoming a top producer for Prudential in 2010. I’ve never golfed a day in my life, but after talking to the new pro, Eddie O’Donnell, that he got back into the game. Peterson Head Golf Pro at Mays Landing Country Club, Devon Peterson, was hired at Atlantis Country Club in Tuckerton, NJ, where he I may give it a shot. Why? It’s not because Peterson, a PGA Pro worked his way up from dishwasher to cook. O’Donnell, then with decades of experience under his belt, is the best person the golf pro at Atlantis, took Peterson under his wing and got to teach me the game of golf (though I’m sure he’s fantastic). him back into the game. It’s because Peterson makes golf sound like so much fun. Though he was exposed to some future golf Hall of Famers In fact, that’s the premise of much of his work right now. One early on, Peterson still didn’t plan to go into golf as a career. In way Peterson has brought ‘fun’ to golf was by instituting a fact, when he was 21, Peterson began working with his father ‘Skins Game’—According to GolfTips on Golfsmith.com, “Golf selling insurance. He wasn’t a terrific insurance salesman, skins have players competing for money...with the golfers but he was great at golf. So when he took a client golfing at facing off hole by hole”—each Friday afternoon from 2:30-5:00, Colonia Country Club and the client asked the pro there if he where anyone is welcome to play for $30, $10 of which goes in was still looking for an assistant, the pro responded by asking, to the ‘pot’ of ‘skins’. “Can you work on the 4th of July?”

Peterson is also excited about the new family course that’s That was over 30 years ago. Now in his 26th year as a PGA being developed right now at Mays Landing Country Club. Class A member and finally back to the Jersey Shore, Peterson Set to open soon, the family course is designed to bring more is thrilled to be teaching the game he loves at the Mays families to the game of golf, and with packages like the ‘Get Landing Country Club. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons Peterson is excited right now, however, is because he is exactly where he wants to be. Peterson, who summered at the Jersey Shore during his youth, has spent the last ten years trying to return. And it almost didn’t happen.

After spending the last decade in Delaware as the Head Golf Pro at Shawnee Country Club in Milford, Peterson, who had taken about a year off from golf, decided to get back in the game. He was met with almost instant success in the form of simultaneous job offers from Dick’s and a golf club in the Pennsylvania mountains. Ready to make the transition, Peterson stopped in to see his old friends, The Fraser’s— Peterson was the golf pro at Atlantic City Country Club for 8 years prior to it being sold in 1998—to say hello. The rest, as they say, is history.

Peterson couldn’t be happier to be back in the area. Not only is he once again working for the Fraser family, whom he calls a “true golf family”, but he is back in New Jersey. Though originally from Union County, New Jersey, Peterson and his family moved to Tuckerton when he was in his late teens. And of course, Peterson spent years living in Somers Point when he worked for the Frasers the first time around.

The irony of the situation is that Peterson never intended to have a golf career. Though his dad, who was an amateur champion himself, introduced Peterson to golf as a child, other interests pulled Peterson away from the game. Interestingly, it was when Peterson’s aspirations to be a chef collided with golf The Boardwalk Journal | June 2013 | 27

The Boardwalk Journal | June 2013 | 59 politics by Harry Hurley, Political Editor of The Boardwalk Journal The 2013 Primary Wrap-Up: Pauls, McDevitt, Langford and Why Jim Whelan May Have a Problem in November

The much anticipated and fiercely negative Republican Primary Election for Atlantic County Suddenly his friends were disloyal political scoundrels. McDevitt called County Executive Dennis Freeholder At-Large is now in the rear view mirror. Levinson “a liar.” He called Party Chairman Keith Davis “a Political Boss.”

After all the ballyhoo, negative print collateral, television and radio blitzkrieg, it wasn’t even close. As a long-time political analyst, I do not fault McDevitt for his strategy. He was a man with literally no good options. I don’t agree with his theme, but, once he abandoned the convention and the As I had long projected, the Atlantic County Regular Republican Party line held mightily. regular Republican Party, he really had no choice but to run hard against it.
