Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. • The Real Housewives of Postfeminism: False Agency and the Internalization of Patriarchy on Reality Television
THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF POSTFEMINISM: FALSE AGENCY AND THE INTERNALIZATION OF PATRIARCHY ON REALITY TELEVISION A thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Communication, Culture, and Technology By Lilian Hughes, B.A. Washington, D.C. April 23rd, 2012 Copyright 2012 by Lilian Hughes All Rights Reserved ii THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF POSTFEMINISM: FALSE AGENCY AND THE INTERNALIZATION OF PATRIARCHY ON REALITY TELEVISION Lilian Hughes, B.A. Thesis advisor: Kimberly Meltzer Ph.D. ABSTRACT The figure of the wife has been present in popular culture for many years, and interpreting her portrayal often informs the reader of the contemporary position of women in society. This study addresses the recent representation of the wife on the reality television series, The Real Housewives. Using previous scholarship on the trends in postfeminism, I investigate how the show promotes a postfeminist discourse. Specifically, I adapt Angela McRobbie’s work in order to understand the shifts both in the representation of women in popular culture and in the women’s movement. How has the women’s movement evolved from The Feminine Mystic to The Real Housewives? And how does reality television shape women’s place in society? Ultimately I argue that the current representation of women in popular culture presents an internalized sexism. In other words, I argue The Real Housewives portrays and promotes a discourse in which women have become their own oppressors. iii Acknowledgements I would like to express my appreciation for the many people who inspired and helped me to write this thesis.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Knot by Marty Kindall The Knot by Marty Kindall. Its the year 1936, and the locals consider Heather an odd woman. She doesnt act like a proper woman shouldshe wears trousers, lives alone, and refuses to marry her long-time steady. And now shes taken up with that scruffy Ben Sheridan, who they think, in their twisted minds, might drag their daughters off into the woods and murder them. But Heather knows what happened all those years ago, and shes not one bit afraid of Ben or what the town thinks of her. Ben feels that probably the best thing he can do is leave Bryeton and not cause trouble for Heatheror for his mother, whom he fears is being treated badly by his stepfather, Hal. In the end, he cant leave his mom to suffer, and he cant get Heather out of his head. But someone else feels otherwise, and he or she will do whatever it takes to get rid of Beneven if it means going as far as murder to get the job done. The Knot is the stuff great movies are made ofa vintage setting, a family torn apart by tragedy, and a moving love story. Very few authors can suck me into a story so thoroughly or make me fall deeply in love with the hero, but Ms. Kindall has done it here. Heather is a tough, assertive woman, yet very likeablemaking her worthy of the heros love.

  • Star Jacqueline Laurita: “I Try My Best to Get Along with Everyone”
‘RHONJ’ Star Jacqueline Laurita: “I Try My Best to Get Along With Everyone” By Kerri Sheehan You may know the sassy and fiercely protective Jacqueline Laurita from Bravo’s hit reality show The Real Housewives of New Jersey, but that’s not her only claim to fame. Before we delve into this season’s drama and last night’s episode, let’s focus on a few things you may not know about Laurita, starting with the fact that this 43-year-old mother of three has her own beauty website, AltruisticBeauty.com, with publicist Suzanne Summers. The two began working on the site together after first developing a friendship. “I told her about my idea, and we decided to turn our love affair for beauty into a business. Since I am a licensed cosmetologist with years of experience and Suzanne is a beauty publicist, we make a great pair. We bring our years of knowledge to the site and also handpicked a team of other beauty and health professionals to blog with us.” Inspiration for Laurita’s company came from her days as a cosmetologist. “I had this vision for a beauty website a long time ago. I’ve spent several years educating people about cosmetics, skincare and everything beauty. I have literally tried it all.” Real Housewives viewers were an impetus as well. “Fans of my show would tweet me beauty questions constantly, so I created a platform to get all of their beauty questions answered. I get all sorts of questions from what plastic surgery procedures I recommend to how to make treatments from items in your refrigerator.
