How can we convey the relevance of studying music history to current and future generations of students? And how might we represent and reflect the myriad, often conflicting perspectives, positions, and identities that make up both music’s history and the writers of history? Here we offer one response to those questions. Open Access Musicology is a free collection of essays, written in an accessible style and with a focus on modes of inquiry rather than content coverage. Our authors draw from their experience as scholars but also as teachers. They have been asked to describe why they became musicologists in the first place and how their individual paths led to the topics they explore and the questions they pose. Like most scholarly literature, the essays have all been reviewed by experts in the field. Unlike all scholarly literature, the essays have also been reviewed by students at a variety of institutions for clarity and relevance. These essays are intended for undergraduates, graduate stu- dents, and interested readers without any particular expertise. They can be incorporated into courses on a range of topics as standalone readings or used to supplement textbooks. The topics introduce and explore a variety of subjects, practices, and methods but, above all, seek to stimulate classroom discussion on music his- tory’s relevance to performers, listeners, and citizens. Open Access Musicology will never pretend to present complete histories, cover all elements of a subject, or satisfy the agenda of every reader. Rather, each essay provides an opening to further contemplation and study. Andrew Granade As an undergraduate student, I knew the word musicology as my high school piano teacher was a musicologist, but I didn’t know much beyond the word. With two historians as parents (my mother taught high school and my father college), I was already oriented toward a love of history, but thought I wanted to be a pianist. That career path changed when my collegiate piano teacher began asking me questions about the background of composers I was learning and their styles. I came to love digging in the library and ultimately chose musicology for my graduate studies. I also developed a fascination with music of the present and recent past— as a pianist, I felt it spoke to my current life in a deeper way than music from earlier centuries, and I enjoyed the challenge of fig- uring out how to play effectively with a tape recording or deciphering a cryptic graphic notation. Then I discovered

My paper defines and analyzes the use of Native American elements in classical piano repertoire that has been composed based on Native American tribal melodies, rhythms, and motifs. First, a historical background and survey of scholarly transcriptions of many tribal melodies, in chapter 1, explains the interest generated in American indigenous music by music scholars and composers. Chapter 2 defines and illustrates prominent Native American musical elements. Chapter 3 outlines the timing of seven factors that led to the beginning of a truly American concert idiom, music based on its own indigenous folk material. Chapter 4 analyzes examples of Native American inspired piano repertoire by the “Indianist” composers between 1890-1920 and other composers known primarily as “mainstream” composers. Chapter 5 proves that the interest in Native American elements as compositional material did not die out with the end of the “Indianist” movement around 1920, but has enjoyed a new creative activity in the area called “Classical Native” by current day Native American composers.

Plucked String Instruments The Guitar and Its Performance from the Fifteenth to Eighteenth Centuries James Tyler The Four-Course Guitar (Fifteenth to Seventeenth Centuries) In the 15th century the terms chitarra and chitarino (Italy), guittara (Spain), quitare, quinterne, guisterne (France), and gyterne (Eng- land), et al. referred to a round-backed instrument that later de- veloped into the mandolin. Only in the 16th century did several of these terms come to be used for members of the guitar family. The guitar as we know it, with its figure-eight body shape, began to be widely used from the middle of the 15th century onward (paint- ings already show such an instrument early in the 15th century, al- though no actual instruments survive prior to the end of the century). This guitar (as opposed to the larger viola da mono or vihuela da mano) generally was a small treble-ranged instrument of only four courses of strings, with an intricately constructed rosette covering an open sound hole and gut frets tied around the neck.l James Tyler, The Early Guitar: a History and Handbook (London, 1980), 15-17,25-26.

At the same time, a wave of ethnologists began researching and studying Native Americans in an effort to document their culture. In music, the character piece was a very successful genre for composers to express themselves. It became a natural genre for composers of the Indianist Movement to explore for portraying musical themes and folklore of Native-American tribes.

When I acquired a 1734 mandolino in the nineteen-thirties, having somehow raised fifteen shillings (about $1.85) for it, I was thrilled to have my first historical instrument, but had no idea that such a tiny, frail thing could have been used for real music making. Nor did I suspect that I would eventually develop such an interst in, and enjoyment of, the whole family of "little lutes," of which the mandolino is such a prominent member. Consideration of these instruments is bedevilled by names, as is so often the case: mandore, mandora, mandola, bandurria, bandola, pandurina, Milanese mandolin, mandolino, mandoline, even soprano lute — how can some semblance of order and reason be brought to the subject.

It is difficult to define precisely what features distinguish guitars from other members of the lute family, because the name ‘guitar’ has been applied to instruments exhibiting a wide variation in morphology and performing practice. The modern classical guitar has six strings, a wooden resonating chamber with incurved sidewalls and a flat back. Although its earlier history includes periods of neglect as far as art music is concerned, it has always been an instrument of popular appeal, and has become an internationally established concert instrument endowed with an increasing repertory. In the Hornbostel and Sachs classification system the guitar is a ‘composite chordophone’ of the lute type (seeLUTE, §1, andCHORDOPHONE). 1. Structure of the modern guitar. Fig.1 shows the parts of the modern classical guitar. In instruments of the highest quality these have traditionally been made of carefully selected woods: the back and sidewalls of Brazilian rosewood, the neck cedar and the fingerboard ebony; the face or table, acoustically the most important part of the instrument, is of spruce, selected for its resilience, resonance and grain (closeness of grain is considered important, and a good table will have a grain count about 5 or 6 per cm). The table and back are each composed of two symmetrical sections, as is the total circumference of the sidewalls.

    ARTHUR FARWELL: PIANO MUSIC, VOLUME ONE by Lisa Cheryl Thomas ‘he evil that men do lives ater them’, says Mark Antony in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar; ‘he good is ot interred with their bones.’ Luckily, that isn’t true of composers: Schubert’s bones had been in the ground for over six decades when the young Arthur Farwell, studying electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, heard the ‘Uninished’ Symphony for the irst time and decided that he was going to be not an engineer but a composer. Farwell, born in St Paul, Minnesota, on 23 March 1872,1 was already an accomplished musician: he had learned the violin as a child and oten performed in a duo with his pianist elder brother Sidney, in public as well as at home; indeed, he supported himself at college by playing in a sextet. His encounter with Schubert proved detrimental to his engineering studies – he had to take remedial classes in the summer to be able to pass his exams and graduated in 1893 – but his musical awareness expanded rapidly, not least through his friendship with an eccentric Boston violin prodigy, Rudolph Rheinwald Gott, and frequent attendance at Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts (as P a ‘standee’: he couldn’t aford a seat). Charles Whiteield Chadwick (1854–1931), one of the most prominent of the New England school of composers, ofered compositional advice, suggesting, too, that Farwell learn to play the piano as soon as possible. Edward MacDowell (1860–1908), perhaps the leading American Romantic composer of the time, looked over his work from time to time – Farwell’s inances forbade regular study with such an eminent igure, but he could aford counterpoint lessons with the organist Homer Albert Norris (1860–1920), who had studied in Paris with Dubois, Gigout and Guilmant, and piano lessons with homas P.

My examination of influential historical programs, including NBC radio’s 1928–42 Music Appreciation Hour and CBS television’s 1958–72 Young People’s Concerts, as well as contemporary materials including children’s visual media and North Carolina Symphony Education Concerts from 2017–19, show how dominant representations of classical music curated for children systemically erase women and composers- of-color’s contributions and/or do not contextualize their marginalization. I also intervene in how classical music is represented to children and young people. From 2017 to 2019, I conducted participatory research at the Global Scholars Academy (GSA), a K-8 public charter school in Durham, NC, to generate new curricula and materials fostering critical engagement with classical music and music history. Stemming from the participatory research principle of situating community collaborators as co-producers of knowledge, conducting participatory research with children urged me to prioritize children’s perspectives throughout this project.

    Stringing and Tuning the Renaissance Four-Course Guitar: Interpreting the Primary Sources by Michael Fink Over the past 85 years, the Renaissance four-course guitar has been researched and written about sporadically, and a few musical editions and facsimiles of the repertoire have been published. In the research, one of the chief issues has been the stringing and tuning of the instrument. The quality of investigations has varied from carefully detailed to somewhat superficial. At the time of this writing (2007), the chief contributions to the issue of tuning the four- course guitar have been made by the estimable James Tyler1 and Tyler in collaboration with others2. With the exception of the 1974 article, which deals with a particular source on tuning, these writings have been general expositions on the Renaissance guitar with limited discussions about stringing/tuning. Their sources are almost exclusively Renaissance theorists and the few composers and redactors who included some instruction on stringing/tuning. These, in fact, are all we have, although in some cases, tablatures may suggest tuning preferences. The thrust of the present study is to review critically all the appropriate primary sources, including selected tablatures; to propose possible interpretations of them; and — crossing national lines — to tabulate the principal data. STRINGING: ICONOGRAPHY FROM FRANCE, THE NETHERLANDS, AND ALSACE Interestingly, France — not Spain — furnishes us with the earliest indication of the guitar’s stringing. Jean Gerson, in a sermon written around the year 1400, likens the Four Cardinal Virtues in Christianity to the “guiterne de quatre cordes,” suggesting that it was a four- course instrument at least that early.3 At that time the guitar was only “tortoise” shaped, like a lute.
