The park’s saproxylic beetle fauna, associated with dead wood and veteran trees, can be considered as nationally important. Dazu ist allerdings zu bedenken, daß in die „Familie Conopidae" bis in die allerjüngste Zeit die Stylogastridae eingeschlossen wurden. Enderlein (1936) ver- wendet für die beiden Schwestergruppen die Namen Archischiza (mit der einzigen Familie Conopidae) und Muscaria (alle übrigen Schizophora). Seguy (1951 in Grasse) nennt sie, weniger glücklich, Conopoidea und Muscoidea. Auch Hendel (1936/37 in Kükenthal -Krumbach) und Rohdendorf (1964) vertreten die Annahme, daß zwischen den beiden Gruppen ein Schwestergruppenverhältnis besteht. Rohdendorf bringt das in seiner Stammbaumzeichnung (p. 265, Fig. 85) und Hendel mit Worten (p. 1876) zum Ausdruck: „Die sonst spezialisierten Conopiden zweigen danach vor der Gabe- lung der Schizophoren in Acalyptratae und Calyptratae ab ..." In ihren Systemen lassen beide Autoren ihre Überzeugung allerdings nicht erkennen; denn beide sind Anhänger einer typologischen Systematik: Ihre Systeme sind keine genauen Darstel- lungen der von ihnen angenommenen phylogenetischen Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen. Mit der Frage, ob die Annahme eines Schwestergruppenverhältnisses zwischen den Archischiza und den Muscaria (bzw. Conopoidea und Muscoidea im Sinne von Seguy) berechtigt ist, habe ich mich früher (1958) auseinandergesetzt mit dem auch heute noch gültigen Ergebnis, daß man „trotz der noch durchaus unzulänglichen Begründung das Bestehen eines Schwestergruppenverhältnisses zwischen den Conopidae und den ,übrigen Schizophora' doch wohl für wahrscheinlich halten" muß. -

ROBBER-FLIES and EMPIDS Asilus ROBBER-FLIES Asilidae. Very bristly predatory flies that head from front generally chase and catch other insects in mid-air. Most species sit in wait and dart out when likely prey appears. The prey is then sucked dry with the stout proboscis, which projects horizontally or obliquely forward. There is a deep groove between the eyes in both sexes, the eyes never touching even in males. A 'beard' on the face protects eyes from struggling prey. Legs are sturdy and have 2 pads at most. Wings folded flat over body at rest. Larvae eat some dead vegetable matter, but most are at least partly predatory and some feed mainly on beetle and fly grubs in the soil. Asilus with prey As Asi/us crabroniformis. An unmistakable fly - one of the largest in B - inhabiting open country 7-10. A very strong flier. Breeds in cow pats and other dung. Dasypogon diadema. First 2 long veins both reach wing margin: wing membrane ribbed. Front tibia has curved spine at tip. Male more uniformly black, with dark wings. 6-8 in scrubby places, especially coastal dunes. S. ;., Leptogaster cylindrica. Feet without pads. Hind femur yellow. 3rd antennal segment ends in bristle. One of the slimmest robber-flies, it resembles a crane-fly in flight. It hunts in grassy places, flying slowly and plucking aphids from the grasses. 5-8. A L. guttiventris is similar but has reddish hind femur. 85 Dioctria atricapi/la. First 2 long veins reach margin. Beard rather sparse and, as in all Oioctria species, the antennae spring from a prominence high on the head. -

Our work breaks down the methodological barriers, providing a distribution for a rare and conspicuous thick-headed fl y. RESÚMEN Myopa metallica Camras, 1992 es una mosca parásita, endémica de Chile, cuya distribución era desconocida. En este estudio se reportan cuatro nuevas localidades entre la región de Atacama y Metropolitana usando ciencia ciudadana. Nuestro trabajo rompe las barreras metodológicas, proporcionando una distriución para una especie de mosca conspicua y rara. Thick-headed fl ies (Diptera: Conopidae) are represented by Physoconops or Stylogaster (Skevington et al. 2010, 863 species distributed worldwide except for both Antarctica Stuke 2017). -

The Bees and Wasps of Marsland Nature Reserve Mason wasp Invertebrate survey and habitat evaluation Patrick Saunders [email protected] http://kernowecology.co.uk 1 Introduction This document consists of habitat evaluation and management recommendations for Bees and Wasps (Aculeate hymenoptera) for the Devon Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve Marsland mouth. The survey and report was commissioned by DWT Reserve warden. Marsland Nature reserve description (Pilkington & Threlkeld 2012) • The reserve comprises 212 hectares, of which 186 hectares occurs in the Marsland Valley and 26 hectares in the Welcombe Valley. The site was designated a SSSI in 1952. In addition the reserve includes an unknown acreage of foreshore north of Welcombe Mouth for 4 kilometres, extending beyond South Hole Farm (SS219201). The boundary of the reserve is approximately 18 miles long and is very complex, mainly through following the seven separate tributary streams. The reserve is freehold owned by Devon Wildlife Trust • The primary interest of the reserve is as an example of a north Devon/Cornwall coombe valley with a variety of slopes, soil types and aspects and coastal area that gives rise to a similar diversity of habitats. The most important of these are the extensive areas of relatively pure oak woodland and oak coppice, the maritime grassland and grass heath and the alder woodland and wet flushes in the valley bottoms. • There is approximately 36h of grassland, 130h of woodland, 43h of coastal habitat and 1h of open water. • The reserve also lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Marsland Valley being highly representative of an unspoilt coastal coombe habitat. -

Antipa", Bucuresti] The present paper is based an extensive material of the family Cono pidae deposited in the collections of the Muzeul de Istarie Naturala "Gr. -mtipa", Bucuresti. We have found in the revised material altogether 39 species of this family collected on the whole territory of Rumania. We include also further 6 species which we did not find in the revised material but the occurrence of which in Rumania is known from the literature. At the present time 45 species of the family Conopidae are known on the territory of Rumania but not even this number is definite. Kröber (1936, 1939) records e. g. 57 species from Italy, 35 from Greece and 53 from France. Although the occurrence of conopid-flies is more frequent in warmer southern regions, in Czechoslovakia, where the family Conopidae has been studied very extensively [ Chväla, 1961, 1965), 52 species have been recorded and 8 other species are expected to be found here. The study and collecting of Conopidae especially in southern sandy regions of Rumania [ Bucuresti and Dobrogea Regions) will result without no doubt in the discovery of further interesting species. The first recmd on this family in Rumania was published by Frivaldszky [1876] who recorded 2 species - Zodion ctnereum Fabr. -

This is the first comprehensive introduction to the flies of the subfamily Tachydromiinae (Hybotidae) of Singapore. The monograph summarizes all publications on the Tachydromiinae of Singapore and includes new data resulting from mass-trapping surveys made in Singapore during the last six years. A few samples from Malaysia (Johor province, Pulau Tioman and Langkawi) have been also included in this study. In Singapore the Tachydromiinae are the most diverse group of Empidoidea (except Dolichopodidae) and currently comprise 85 species belonging to the following nine genera: Platypalpus (1), Tachydromia (1), Chersodromia (6), Pontodromia (1), Drapetis (5), Elaphropeza (60), Crossopalpus (1), Nanodromia (3) and Stilpon (7). All species are diagnosed and illustrated.
