The Covid-19 pandemic has understandably altered the way the Dicastery functions with much of its work accomplished ‘virtually’. Speeches by the President The main subject of the President’s interventions during this period was ‘Hu- man Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, the document signed by His Holiness Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmad Al-Tayyib in Abu Dhabi on 4 February 2019. The speeches focused on some of the key themes raised in the document: education, religious freedom, commitment of consecrated persons, universal fraternity etc. With the publication of the Encyclical Fratelli Tutti, the Supreme Pontiff has expanded the scope of common commitment and solidarity which have proved to be of immense value in addressing the serious crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Drawing inspiration from the Encyclical, Cardinal Ayuso highlighted, at the G20 Riyadh Summit, the political dimension of interreligious dialogue for constructing an inclusive civil society which rejects the ‘throwaway culture’-that which isolates people and leaves them unattended and uncared for. At the Virtual Deepavali Meet organized by the Italian Union of Hindus on 13 November, he reminded that as the worldwide campaign to produce the anx- iously awaited coronavirus vaccine is on, religions must “motivate people to use the ‘social vaccine of solidarity’ in the vaccine-less pandemic times. […] while sci- ence and medicine are invaluable sources to addressing the current problem of the pandemic… religion and spirituality are indispensable allies in bringing about the much-needed soothing comfort to the suffering caused by the deadly virus as well as solidarity towards the hungry, the homeless, the poor and those who have been afflicted by anxiety and depression”. Articles In September 2020, our Dicastery and the World Council of Churches (WCC) jointly published a document titled “Serving a Wounded World in Inter- religious Solidarity: A Christian Call to Reflection and Action during Covid-19 and beyond”. The first article published in this number of Pro Dialogo is by Rev. Fr. 283 Edward Chau Fun, President of the Commission for Interreligious Dialogue of Hong Kong who offers a reflection on interreligious solidarity in the light of this document. Followed by this is a scholarly presentation by Rev. Prof. Francis Clooney, SJ on Interreligious Dialogue and Comparative Theology as permanent ways of living and understanding of Catholic faith, based on his long and rich experience of teaching at Harvard University. The author refers to the well-known definition of theology which is, ‘faith seeking understanding’ in an intellectual and spiritual pursuit within a faith community with respect for reason, claims of truth, religious practices and personal experiences, on condition of being available to study and to appropriate at least one other tradition, besides one’s own. The last two articles respectively by Rev. Fr. Clarence Devadass of the Arch- diocese of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia who is the Secretary General of the Office of Theological Concerns of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences(FABC) and Rev. Fr. James Fredericks, Professor Emeritus of Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles offer a re-reading of interreligious responses in Asia to Laudato Si’ and to the social teachings of Fratelli Tutti which must guide our commitment to dialogue. While benefiting from the French crown’s interest in using the Jesuits as a tool for empire, they did not help develop an overarching imperial structure like that of Spain and Portugal or that of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. The work of Jean-Venant Bouchet (1655–1732), Louis-Noël de Bourzes (1673–1735), Claude Moriset (1667–1742), Claude-Stanislas Boudier (1686– 1757), Gaston-Laurent Cœurdoux (1691–1779), and many others was instead important in building linkages between institutions and individuals in Europe and India. It fur- ther allowed commercial cartographers in Paris and London like Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726), Jean-Baptiste d’Anville (1697–1782), and James Rennell (1742–1830) to de- velop a more sophisticated picture of the interior of India. • A Defense of Particular Religious Preference in an Age of Religious Pluralism
Ariel Dempsey The Preference Wager: A Defense of Particular Religious Preference in an Age of Religious Pluralism “Some dogma, we are told, was credible in the twelfth century, but is not credible in the twentieth. You might as well say that a certain philosophy can be believed on Mondays, but cannot be believed on Tuesdays…What a man can believe depends upon his philosophy, not upon the clock or the century.” – G.K. Chesterton1 Abstract: In the descriptive sense, “religious pluralism” merely refers to the fact that there is plurality of religions. In the prescriptive philosophical sense, “religious pluralism” refers to a distinctive way of thinking about the diversity of religions. A pluralistic approach to the plurality of religions often argues that religions are morally and epistemically equal. As defined by Lesslie Newbigin, the ideology of religious pluralism is “the belief that the differences between the religions are not a matter of truth and falsehood but of different perceptions of the one truth.” Accepting the ideology of religious pluralism renders absurd any religious apologetic claim to a preference for a particular religion. By religious preference I mean warrantedly preferring a specific religion as true, even in the face of a plurality of different religions. The purpose of this thesis is to address the question of whether it is legitimate to make an apologetic attempt to argue for a specific religious preference and selects Christianity as a case study. The proposal is that George Lindbeck’s Cultural Linguistic approach allows for a feasible religious preference and apologetics may have a role to play in justifying the preferentiality of a particular religion.

He is also a leading figure in the field of comparative theology, and in this capacity, he delivered in 2003 the Plenary Address at the Catholic Theology Society of America. In a thought-provoking manner, he began his speech by recalling the deep religious experience he had when, visiting an old Hindu temple in Chennai, he stopped at the shrine of Lakṣmī. There, he felt “a kind of real presence” and says he “might even have worshipped” the Goddess (Clooney 2010, 86).

Specifically, the upcoming UN Food Systems Summit, which will take place in New York, and which will be preceded by a pre-Summit in Rome between the 26th and 28th of July 2021, will focus on the need “to transform agricultural food systems so that they may become catalysts of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda; increasing resilience in light of the Covid- 19 pandemic, strengthening local value chains, improving nutrition, educating producers on the re-use and recycling of resources so that food waste may be reduced, supplying healthy diets accessible to all, and being environmentally sustainable and respectful of local cultures”.1 Given that food security and nutrition are intricately linked to the impacts of climate change, the conservation of natural resources, ecosystems and agricultural production, the UN Secretary- General António Guterres, has affirmed that the upcoming Summit will focus on giving due recognition to the inextricable link that exists between food security, the climate crisis, and biodiversity.

THINKING WITH NOSTRA AETATE: FROM THE NEW PLURALISM TO COMPARATIVE THEOLOGY Mathew N. Schmalz College of the Holy Cross, USA 1. Introduction Newly elected Pope Francis caused a stir in the Western world with a homily he gave after a mass on the Feast of St Rita of Cascia, the patroness of impossible things.1 Reflecting on the salvific implications of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Father observed: The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Mary Immaculate Research Repository and Digital Archive The Presence of Christ in the Eucharist: A Strange Neglect of the Resurrection? Research Masters in Theology Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick David Kennedy Student Number: 13172921 Supervisor: Rev. Dr. Eugene Duffy Abstract The Presence of Christ in the Eucharist: A Strange Neglect of the Resurrection? Eminent theologians, Gerald O’Collins, Anthony J. Kelly and Luis M. Bermejo claim that a strange neglect of Jesus’ resurrection persists in contemporary theologies of the Eucharist. All three suggest that this deficiency emerges from, and is most evident in, theologies of the Eucharist which are shaped by the insights of classical Christology. This thesis will demonstrate that the narrowness and rigidity of such Christology with regard to the Eucharist, finds its clearest expression in the neo-scholastic manualist tradition. To show how traditional theologians failed to engage with Jesus’ resurrection Joseph Pohle’s dogmatic treatise on the Eucharist first published in 1917, is presented herein. However, while such traditional discourse on the Eucharist prevailed in the seminaries in the early twentieth century, a clear shift soon began to emerge, whereby sacramental theologians on mainland Europe broke away from the narrow approach of neo-scholastic reflection by rediscovering the centrality of the Paschal Mystery to theologies of the Eucharist. This thesis suggests that the break with the neo-scholastic manualist tradition and its treatment of the Eucharist, finds its origins in the writings of the Benedictine liturgist, Dom Odo Casel, whose treatise on the mystery of Christian Worship was published in 1932.

Fernando Chica Arellano Mr. Deputy Director General, Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives, Officials of FAO, Illustrious Rapporteurs, Ladies and Gentlemen: I am pleased to have this opportunity to offer the concluding remarks to this meeting. A special word of appreciation and gratitude goes to the co-organizers of this conference, in particular, the Netherlands, the European Commission and the European social partners in the fisheries sector. Along with these Delegations, the Holy See has wished to support this moment of reflection to promote the objective of sustainable fishing to meet the demands of people, but also to confirm that the many institutions of the Catholic Church throughout the world are committed to developing and carrying out various initiatives to contribute to this effort. We must acknowledge the impressive efforts that FAO is carrying out in this sector; it is serious and qualified work that everyone appreciates and that makes the Organization a central structure within the United Nations system for the sound management of the problems of fisheries and fishermen.
