  • George Washington's Arrival in New York, April 25, 1789
Washington arriving in New York, printed in The American Museum Vol 5. page 416, January 1789-June 1789. Magazine clipping, 1 pages. [Draft Created by Crowdsourcing] April 25. On Thursday about two o'clock, arrived in town, the most illustrious George Washington, president of the united states. His excellency slept at at Woodbridge on Wednesday night, and on Thursday morning arrived at mr.Boudinot's, where he breakfasted, along with the gentlemen composing the committee, appointed by congress, &c. &ec. About twelve o'clock he was conducted on board of the barge prepared for his reception, the beauty of which met with his highest approbation; he was rowed across the bay by thirteen skilful pilots, Thomas Randall, esq. acting as cockswian. His excellency's barge was accompanied by a barge containing the heads of the great departments of the united states, viz. the honourable board of treasury, the minister for foreign affairs, and the secretary at war. There never, perhaps, was a scene in which more universal pleasure appeared than on his approaching the battery and Murray's wharf. The Spanish packet, which lay with her colours only displayed to salute him as he passed,on firing of a gun, displayed, in a moment, every flag known in foreign nations. The ship North Carolina, belonging to Arnold H. Dohrman, esq. was decorated in like manner, and all the vessels in the harbour had their flags flying. On the barge's passing the packet, she fired a salute of thirteen guns, which was returned by the same number from the battery.

Speech by Sir Anthony Bailey, KGCN, OBE, GCSS Armourers’ Hall Tuesday 23 June 2015 MR PRESIDENT, YOUR SERENE HIGHNESS, YOUR EXCELLENCIES, MY LORDS, REVEREND FATHER, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all at this luncheon held in honour of His Excellency, Mr Andrej Kiska, President of the Slovak Republic who commenced yesterday his visit to our country. On behalf of all present, I am delighted to warmly welcome Your Excellency to this ancient yet vibrant City of London. May I also welcome senior members of the Diplomatic Corps, members of both the House of Lords and of Common 1 Council as well as many friends of Slovakia here in London. I welcome too the distinguished delegation of the President and Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Slovakia. Mr President, This lunch follows Your Excellency’s meeting at Mansion House a few moments ago with the Lord Mayor of this great and ancient City and follows your Audience yesterday afternoon with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle. It also follows the highly successful State Visit of Her Majesty The Queen to Slovakia in 2008. Today though is an opportunity to celebrate the new partnerships continually being forged between our two countries. Partnerships, which are based on a realisation of the economic and political advantages, which we both 2 can enjoy through working ever more closely together. This City and its Corporation of London, if you indulge me Mr President, are true global masters of this dialogue and exchange, having forged like no other new and deeper partnerships between countries and companies at all levels for many many hundreds of years.

  • Prayer for the United States of America Composed by His Excellency Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò
Prayer for The United States of America Composed by His Excellency Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò Almighty and Eternal God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords: graciously turn your gaze to us who invoke You with confidence. Bless us, citizens of the United States of America; grant peace and prosperity to our Nation; illuminate those who govern us so that they may commit themselves to the common good, in respect for Your holy Law. Protect those who, defending the inviolable principles of the Natural Law and Your Commandments, must face the repeated assaults of the Enemy of the human race. Keep in the hearts of Your children courage for the truth, love for virtue and perseverance in the midst of trials. Make our families grow in the example that Our Lord has given us, together with His Most Holy Mother and Saint Joseph in the home of Nazareth; give to our fathers and mothers the gift of strength, to educate wisely the children with which you have blessed them. Give courage to those who, in spiritual combat, fight the good fight as soldiers of Christ against the furious forces of the children of darkness. Keep each one of us, O Lord, in your Most Sacred Heart, and above all he, whom Your Providence has placed at the head of our Nation. Bless the President of the United States of America, so that aware of his responsibility and his duties, he may be a knight of justice, a defender of the oppressed, a firm bulwark against Your enemies, and a proud supporter of the children of light.

  • Major Zones of Conflict Send Religious Leaders to Participate in the World Peace Summit
MAJOR ZONES OF CONFLICT SEND RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WORLD PEACE SUMMIT Leaders from the Balkans, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Central Asia to attend New York—[August 25, 2000]—Opening at the United Nations on August 28th, The Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders will bring together more than 1,000 religious and spiritual leaders of the world's diverse faith traditions. Many of those attending are preeminent religious leaders from current zones of conflict—such as the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Philippines, Rwanda and Sudan. One aim of the Summit is to engage these leaders in frank and meaningful discussions of how they can work together to reduce tensions in their regions. At the Summit, the leaders will discuss how to harness the power of religious tolerance and spiritual faith to educate and mobilize their communities to focus on reducing divisions and ancient antipathies. After meeting at the U.N. headquarters these leaders will continue to engage in two-day working group session at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to devise special initiatives to address regional conflict as well as poverty issues, environmental degradation, and forgiveness and reconciliation. Anticipated outcomes of the Summit are a Declaration for World Peace, and plans for the establishment of an ongoing International Advisory Council of Religious and Spiritual Leaders. This Council can serve as a resource for the UN Secretary-General and the UN system in its conflict prevention and resolution efforts. The Summit is being convened by an independent group of interfaith leaders, religious scholars and theologians.
