Current Debates About the Approach of the “Munich School” and Further Perspectives on the Interdisciplinary Study of the History of World Christianity ADRIAN HERMANN UNIVERSITÄT HAMBURG CIPRIAN BURLacIOIU LUDWIG-MAXIMILIANS-UNIVERSITÄT MÜNCHEN ABSTRACT: The research projects and publications of Klaus Koschorke and the “Munich School of World Christianity” have sparked intense debate over the last two decades. The first section of this contribution discusses some of these reactions and critiques, as well as Koschorke’s responses. It addresses questions about the idea of “polycentricity,” alternative ways of conceptualizing a variety of Christian centers, the relationship of Koschorke’s approach to the concept of transcultura- tion, and the need for greater diversity and inclusiveness in scholarly perspectives. The second section outlines some important issues regarding challenges and further perspectives for a future history of world Christianity. It touches on the question of the geographic horizon(s) of this approach, debates about “transmission” and “ap- propriation,” and the role of the anthropology of Christianity in describing the fluid character of Christian movements. In addition, it addresses the problem of how to relate the history of world Christianity to a global history of religion, as well as the importance of considering issues of migration as central to our understanding of Christianity. While benefiting from the French crown’s interest in using the Jesuits as a tool for empire, they did not help develop an overarching imperial structure like that of Spain and Portugal or that of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. The work of Jean-Venant Bouchet (1655–1732), Louis-Noël de Bourzes (1673–1735), Claude Moriset (1667–1742), Claude-Stanislas Boudier (1686– 1757), Gaston-Laurent Cœurdoux (1691–1779), and many others was instead important in building linkages between institutions and individuals in Europe and India. It fur- ther allowed commercial cartographers in Paris and London like Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726), Jean-Baptiste d’Anville (1697–1782), and James Rennell (1742–1830) to de- velop a more sophisticated picture of the interior of India. Ariel Dempsey The Preference Wager: A Defense of Particular Religious Preference in an Age of Religious Pluralism “Some dogma, we are told, was credible in the twelfth century, but is not credible in the twentieth. You might as well say that a certain philosophy can be believed on Mondays, but cannot be believed on Tuesdays…What a man can believe depends upon his philosophy, not upon the clock or the century.” – G.K. Chesterton1 Abstract: In the descriptive sense, “religious pluralism” merely refers to the fact that there is plurality of religions. In the prescriptive philosophical sense, “religious pluralism” refers to a distinctive way of thinking about the diversity of religions. A pluralistic approach to the plurality of religions often argues that religions are morally and epistemically equal. As defined by Lesslie Newbigin, the ideology of religious pluralism is “the belief that the differences between the religions are not a matter of truth and falsehood but of different perceptions of the one truth.” Accepting the ideology of religious pluralism renders absurd any religious apologetic claim to a preference for a particular religion. By religious preference I mean warrantedly preferring a specific religion as true, even in the face of a plurality of different religions. The purpose of this thesis is to address the question of whether it is legitimate to make an apologetic attempt to argue for a specific religious preference and selects Christianity as a case study. The proposal is that George Lindbeck’s Cultural Linguistic approach allows for a feasible religious preference and apologetics may have a role to play in justifying the preferentiality of a particular religion. -

He is also a leading figure in the field of comparative theology, and in this capacity, he delivered in 2003 the Plenary Address at the Catholic Theology Society of America. In a thought-provoking manner, he began his speech by recalling the deep religious experience he had when, visiting an old Hindu temple in Chennai, he stopped at the shrine of Lakṣmī. There, he felt “a kind of real presence” and says he “might even have worshipped” the Goddess (Clooney 2010, 86). -

Introduction Newly elected Pope Francis caused a stir in the Western world with a homily he gave after a mass on the Feast of St Rita of Cascia, the patroness of impossible things.1 Reflecting on the salvific implications of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Father observed: The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! Since 1992, the Annual Meeting has been the flagship conference of the Group, bringing together scholars to exchange ideas on the academic study of local and transnational expressions of Christianity from all over the world. Since the maiden conference in 1992 entitled “From Christendom to World Christianity,” the Group has boldly and impactfully engaged the difficult question of culture and its dynamic relationship with the Christian belief and lived experiences. We have addressed both the content and modes of cultural expressions and interpretations of the Christian faith with a view to empowering academic and missiological approaches that promote conceptual clarity in the complex field of World Christianity as well as innovative approaches to mission in today’s world. This year’s conference on “Print, Oral, and Digital Cultures in World Christianity and the Hisotry of Mission” continues in exactly this vein. It uses the language of culture to speak about three different mediums in which the Christian message is communicated and the Christian life is practiced. We look forward to the presentations exploring how these three mediums are shaped and are themselves transformed through Christian application, appropriation, and contemplation, be it through liturgy and worship, spritiaual formation and pastoral care, evangelism and mission, or academic research and pedagogy. -

Fukada, DMin, Member Abstract THE NEW POSSIBILITY OF MISSION IN JAPAN by Makoto Kondo It is a fact that the numbers of Christians still remain to be less than only 1% of the whole population of Japan even today. Are there any possibilities for Christian mission in Japan today and in the future, even when people have been losing interest in any religion? In Japan, for more than 400 years from Francisco Xavier up to now, numberless missionaries and pastors have been making every effort to propagate the gospel messages, taking it as an absolute ‘must’ for their missionary activities. Most of them tried to carry out their mission with their own traditional method. As a result, there occurred almost necessarily some sorts of cultural and religious frictions among others throughout history. It is very interesting to know that Christianity in Japan had never been nationalized in Copyright 2017 Makoto Kondo history, though having been very often tempted to become a national religion. In my research project, I tried to trace out the acceptance history of Christianity in Japan, while keeping it in my mind to investigate the most important and basic themes, such as ‘What is Christian mission?’ or ‘How could it be possible for us missionaries and pastors in Japan to serve the churches and anywhere else as true bearers of Christian mission in the present context?’ While pursuing my research project, it became clear at least that the i statistic ratio of the Christian population in Japan does not necessarily lead to any conclusion as to whether Christian mission in Japan resulted in success or failure. -

Dr. Eugene Duffy Abstract The Presence of Christ in the Eucharist: A Strange Neglect of the Resurrection? Eminent theologians, Gerald O’Collins, Anthony J. Kelly and Luis M. Bermejo claim that a strange neglect of Jesus’ resurrection persists in contemporary theologies of the Eucharist. All three suggest that this deficiency emerges from, and is most evident in, theologies of the Eucharist which are shaped by the insights of classical Christology. This thesis will demonstrate that the narrowness and rigidity of such Christology with regard to the Eucharist, finds its clearest expression in the neo-scholastic manualist tradition. To show how traditional theologians failed to engage with Jesus’ resurrection Joseph Pohle’s dogmatic treatise on the Eucharist first published in 1917, is presented herein. However, while such traditional discourse on the Eucharist prevailed in the seminaries in the early twentieth century, a clear shift soon began to emerge, whereby sacramental theologians on mainland Europe broke away from the narrow approach of neo-scholastic reflection by rediscovering the centrality of the Paschal Mystery to theologies of the Eucharist. This thesis suggests that the break with the neo-scholastic manualist tradition and its treatment of the Eucharist, finds its origins in the writings of the Benedictine liturgist, Dom Odo Casel, whose treatise on the mystery of Christian Worship was published in 1932.
