journal of jesuit studies 6 (2019) 71-84 brill.com/jjs The Jesuit Contribution to the Geographical Knowledge of India in the Eighteenth Century Manonmani Restif-Filliozat Managing Archivist, FranceArchives Portal [email protected] Abstract While the mapping activities of French Jesuits in China and New France have been extensively studied, those in India have received less attention. While benefiting from the French crown’s interest in using the Jesuits as a tool for empire, they did not help develop an overarching imperial structure like that of Spain and Portugal or that of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. The work of Jean-Venant Bouchet (1655–1732), Louis-Noël de Bourzes (1673–1735), Claude Moriset (1667–1742), Claude-Stanislas Boudier (1686– 1757), Gaston-Laurent Cœurdoux (1691–1779), and many others was instead important in building linkages between institutions and individuals in Europe and India. It fur- ther allowed commercial cartographers in Paris and London like Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726), Jean-Baptiste d’Anville (1697–1782), and James Rennell (1742–1830) to de- velop a more sophisticated picture of the interior of India. • A Defense of Particular Religious Preference in an Age of Religious Pluralism
Ariel Dempsey The Preference Wager: A Defense of Particular Religious Preference in an Age of Religious Pluralism “Some dogma, we are told, was credible in the twelfth century, but is not credible in the twentieth. You might as well say that a certain philosophy can be believed on Mondays, but cannot be believed on Tuesdays…What a man can believe depends upon his philosophy, not upon the clock or the century.” – G.K. Chesterton1 Abstract: In the descriptive sense, “religious pluralism” merely refers to the fact that there is plurality of religions. In the prescriptive philosophical sense, “religious pluralism” refers to a distinctive way of thinking about the diversity of religions. A pluralistic approach to the plurality of religions often argues that religions are morally and epistemically equal. As defined by Lesslie Newbigin, the ideology of religious pluralism is “the belief that the differences between the religions are not a matter of truth and falsehood but of different perceptions of the one truth.” Accepting the ideology of religious pluralism renders absurd any religious apologetic claim to a preference for a particular religion. By religious preference I mean warrantedly preferring a specific religion as true, even in the face of a plurality of different religions. The purpose of this thesis is to address the question of whether it is legitimate to make an apologetic attempt to argue for a specific religious preference and selects Christianity as a case study. The proposal is that George Lindbeck’s Cultural Linguistic approach allows for a feasible religious preference and apologetics may have a role to play in justifying the preferentiality of a particular religion.

  • Ayurveda Derives from the Sanskrit Ayus [Longevity of Life] and Veda
NEW WEBSITE: www.ephesians-511.net JULY 2004, AUGUST 2009, MAY/OCTOBER 2012/JULY 2013 A Y U R V E D A This study of ayurveda was prompted by inquiries made of the writer [from India and abroad] by some who were concerned with the question of any potential difficulties that may arise in the use of this Indian system of medicine by Christians, especially with the Vatican cautions on New Age remedies, herbal medicine and holistic health therapies in its February 3, 2003 Document. They wanted to know, "Does ayurveda fit the bill?" ORIGINS Said to be part of the Atharva Veda and practised from Vedic times, ayurveda derives from the Sanskrit ayur [life] and veda [knowledge or science], meaning 'the science of life'. One story concerning its origin goes like this: Concerned about the problem of disease on earth, sages meeting on the Himalayas deputed one Bharadwaja to approach the god Indra who knew about ayurveda from the Ashwini twins, the physicians to the gods, who learnt it from Daksha Prajapati who in turn had received his knowledge from the creator, Brahma. Bharadwaja passed on his learning to the other sages, of whom one Punarvasu Atreya taught it to his six disciples. Agnivesha, one of the six, wrote his learning down in the Agnivesha Tantra around the 8th century BC, which was revised by Charaka as the Charaka Samhita in the 6th century BC, and again revised in the 9th century AD by Dridhabala, a Kashmiri pandit. Another text, the Susruta Samhita, [by Susruta who is regarded as the father of ayurvedic surgery] is the main source of knowledge about surgery in ancient India.

Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! Research Masters in Theology Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick David Kennedy Student Number: 13172921 Supervisor: Rev. Dr. Eugene Duffy Abstract The Presence of Christ in the Eucharist: A Strange Neglect of the Resurrection? Eminent theologians, Gerald O’Collins, Anthony J. Kelly and Luis M. Bermejo claim that a strange neglect of Jesus’ resurrection persists in contemporary theologies of the Eucharist. All three suggest that this deficiency emerges from, and is most evident in, theologies of the Eucharist which are shaped by the insights of classical Christology. This thesis will demonstrate that the narrowness and rigidity of such Christology with regard to the Eucharist, finds its clearest expression in the neo-scholastic manualist tradition. To show how traditional theologians failed to engage with Jesus’ resurrection Joseph Pohle’s dogmatic treatise on the Eucharist first published in 1917, is presented herein. However, while such traditional discourse on the Eucharist prevailed in the seminaries in the early twentieth century, a clear shift soon began to emerge, whereby sacramental theologians on mainland Europe broke away from the narrow approach of neo-scholastic reflection by rediscovering the centrality of the Paschal Mystery to theologies of the Eucharist. This thesis suggests that the break with the neo-scholastic manualist tradition and its treatment of the Eucharist, finds its origins in the writings of the Benedictine liturgist, Dom Odo Casel, whose treatise on the mystery of Christian Worship was published in 1932.

Press Release DEATH NOTICE OF FR. GABRIELE AMORTH At the age of 91, Fr. Gabriele Amorth, a Pauline priest and exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, died today in Rome 16 September at 7.50 PM (local time). For several weeks, he had suffered from lung problems and was in the last weeks lovingly assisted by his con- freres and by medical personnel. Biography Born in Modena on 1 May 1925, Fr. Amorth was a well rounded religious of the Society of St Paul, a worthy son of its founder, Blessed James Alberione. At 22 years old and ex- actly five years after a private conversation with Fr. Alberione by whom Fr. Amorth him- self was literally impressed, the young Gabriele entered the congregation at the “Casa Ma- dre” of Alba on 25 August 1947. The conversation happened during the summer of 1942 when Gabriele was 17 years old. He was a highschool student who was discerning for his vocation. While he had already glimpses of the call, he had to wait for several years before responding to that call. Returning to Modena after 8 September1943, in fact, he was among the main figures of the civilian resistance movement in Emilia that earned for him- self a death sentence which he miraculously escaped. For this service to the country during the Nazi occupation, he had been awarded last 8 September the “Medaglia della libera- zione” (“Medal of liberation”) by Paola Basilone, the Prefect of Rome, and Roberta Pinot- ti, the Defense Minister of Italy. As he finished grammar school, after the World War II, he joined the Catholic Action and later the Fuci (Italian Catholic Federation of University Students), graduating with a degree in Law.
