  • Annual Report 2017 -2018
LANCASHIRE COUNTY RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18 THE SECRETARY’S OPENING REMARKS Firstly I have to thank the President, Steve Blackburn. Steve has done tremendous work over the year in travelling around clubs and representing the County. A truly approachable gentleman who has brought his own distinct sense of humour to the office. A lot of my Monday mornings have included a phone call from Steve starting with the phrase “I think I may have got away with it but……”. Needless to say the tales have me in stitches. As well as his Presidential duties he is an active member of the Disciplinary and Club & Community Committees which means he’s constantly on the go with his County missionary work. Steve has the huge support of his wife Val, who is also involved on the Mini & Junior committee. A couple entrenched in rugby and its administration, thank you both. To Rugby matters, Our Senior XV have reached the final and other reports in this booklet will cover how they got there, at the time of printing we are in the run up to the final at Twickenham against Hertfordshire whom we were runners up to in the final of the 2011-2012 season. Thanks to Mark Nelson, Steve Rigby, John Greenwood and all the backroom team, along with players who give up their time at the end of very busy seasons to support senior Rugby in Lancashire. Its an absolute joy to be involved in this side of County rugby and one which I look forward to each season.

To me it is the greatest honour of my life to be elected your President . As many Past Presidents have made it their mission during their tenure to visit as many of the County’s Clubs as possible, I will endeavour to continue in the same vein. Having been in the fortunate position to have visited many Clubs in an official capacity (referee) it will give me great pleasure to visit on a more informal basis, hoping to assist any Club that can utilise the County’s help and support.

It is many years ago, more than I care to remember, when I pulled on the under 15 Cheshire school’s shirt, which was to be the beginning of my Cheshire journey; to be asked to be President of Cheshire RFU is the pin- nacle of this journey and I am truly honoured to accept. Having refreshed my memory on the long history of past Cheshire Presidents it has focused my mind on the task in front of me for which I will endeavour to meet the high standards my predecessors have set. My playing days in addition to my under 15 Cheshire caps included under 18 Cheshire schools and seven seasons playing for the Cheshire senior side.

  • Lancashire County Rugby Football Union Annual Report 2018-19
LANCASHIRE COUNTY RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 THE SECRETARY’S OPENING REMARKS As ever my first job is to thank our President for the great work he has done this season. Dave Clarke has been unfailing in his club visits and is a true supporter of Rugby. He has been instrumental in the formation of the ADM Lancashire Leagues which has helped many of our clubs play more local matches. This has seen a number of players staying within the game. With the frequency of his more than daily telephone calls to discuss some issue in the game my children now do a very good impression of the Ginger Ninja from Wigan. Both Dave and myself are indebted to Mrs President, Anne. As well as being his secretary, Anne has deputised for me in meetings and acted as the minutes secretary in our general meetings. Thank you both. To Rugby, both our Senior Mens and Womens XVs failed to reach their finals which was not for want of trying, all our representative players should be thanks for the effort they put in to pulling on the Red & White hoops at the end of a long tiring club season. We will be back. Thanks to Mark Nelson, Steve Rigby, John Greenwood and all the backroom team who work hard to provide these opportunities. Our 20s team did make their day out in Twickenham where they went down to a very strong Yorkshire team, I’m sure we will be seeing more of these lads progressing through to our Senior XV and more success in County Rugby.

I have visited approximately half the Clubs in Cheshire and hope during my second year to have visited the vast majority of our member clubs. I have been to clubs who are playing in the National Leagues and the next visit has been to a club struggling to put out one team at the lowest league level. The striking feature of all clubs is the hard work and dedication of the volunteers many of them past players of advancing years who, week after week, in all weathers turn up to do their regular tasks and support their team.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT To be asked to be President of Cheshire RFU is a great honour and a role that I will do my utmost to fulfil in the time honoured manner. I have been involved with rugby for well over 60 years having been involved in many aspects of the game: as a player, albeit at a modest level, as a coach, referee, referee assessor and as an administrator - as CRFU Treasurer and with some RFU committees. I am fol- lowing in the footsteps of some wonderful former Presidents, who have set the benchmark for the role Many aspects of the game that I was introduced to many years ago are changing; less 15 -a-side male adult rugby, much more mini/junior rugby and a rapidly evolving women's and girl's game; add to this the advent of seven-a-side and touch rugby.
