Some 1,000 of these remain on hair-trigger alert. A similar number remain on hair-trigger alert in Russia. This is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Even if nuclear weapons are not used intentionally, they could be used inadvertently by accident or miscalculation. Nuclear weapons and human fallibility are a dangerous mix. Nuclear deterrence presupposes a certain view of human behavior. It depends on the willingness of political leaders to act rationally under all circumstances, even those of extreme stress. It provides no guarantees or physical protection. It could fail spectacularly and tragically. You have suggested that more nations – such as Japan, South Korea and even Saudi Arabia – may need to develop their own nuclear arsenals because the U.S.

    Karl Barth’s contribution to the German Church struggle against National Socialism Ramathate Dolamo Department of Philosophy and Systematic Theology, University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa Abstract Germany was under a totalitarian regime led by Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1945. This article looks at the responses of the churches in Germany during that period. In particular, Karl Barth’s theology on church and state is examined to determine to what extent it did assist Germany in fighting National Socialism and in rebuilding Germany after the war. The author is of the view that most of Barth’s insights could be relevant and would be applicable today especially in those countries that are still being ruled by autocrats and dictators. Introduction Not only do theologians differ as to whether the (divine) com- mand should be grounded in the Christology or in the “orders of creation”, but also some theologians appear unwilling to recognise that the command is the ground and the instrument of God’s creative will of love both in originating and in sustaining creation in its historical development (Maimela 1984:158). Karl Barth’s views on sociopolitical matters especially those on church and state relations that he started to formulate during his Safenwil pastorate in 1911 were put to the harshest and rigorous test during the reign of Adolf Hitler from 1933 to the end of World War II in 1945. This article is an appre- ciation of the insights of Barth as a theologian and as an activist during the church struggle in Germany against National Socialism.

Ericksen Kurt Mayer Chair in Holocaust Studies Pacific Lutheran University I am pleased to deliver the Raul Hilberg Memorial Lecture, not only for the chance to join the impressive list of prior speakers, but because of Raul Hilberg himself. He was the man who essentially invented Holocaust Studies, completing his path-breaking work while teaching here at the University of Vermont. When Hilberg began his graduate program in political science at Columbia University, he was twenty-two years old. At that time, in 1948, he focused already on the idea and the research project that would make him known to all of us. Here is his description of that moment in his 1996 book, Politics of Memory: "I had become sure of myself, secure in my decision, certain that I would fill in the pieces of my jigsaw puzzle."1 He soon approached one of his professors at Columbia, Franz Neumann, the author of Behemoth and an imposing scholar on Nazi Germany.2 Hilberg asked Neumann if he would take on his proposal for a doctoral dissertation, "The Destruction of the European Jews." Neumann said yes, but he then added the comment, "It's your funeral."3 This exchange took place just three years after the defeat of Hitler's Germany and long before Holocaust Studies had begun to make its mark in the world of ideas.

    '" Lest We Forget #624 DATE:1/11/92 AGAIN THE UGLY AMERICAN It was embarrassing to have the President of the United States throw up at a state dinner and collapse on the floor. He was in the midst of what was supposed to be an important mission to get from our Japanese superiors in economic management a boost for the American economy. The "hero" of the embarrassing moment was Barbara Bush. In fact, she was the only saving feature of the Japanese stop on the trip. Iacocca of Chrysler boasted on his return that the corporate executives with the Bush team had really given the Japanese "something to look at." Iacocca was wrong again: the Japanese executives have long since taken the measure of the American executives. The heads of Chrysler, GM and Ford didn't surprise the Japanese statesmen and business executives at all. The Japanese had already looked at them and understood what they were looking at: over-paid and under-brained corporate executives, taking care of their personal interests while their employees and their country suffered. Barbara Bush was something guite strange for them, however: a woman in command of a crisis, responding with calm presence, being an active and useful stand-in for her indisposed spouse, even speaking with a touch of humor. And TV gave us "the whole story." We saw the exhibitionist Iacocca in Detroit as we had earlier seen the sick Bush in Tokyo. TV took us there when Gorbachev came out of the jaws of death at the end of the failed coup d'etat in the collapsed USSR, and we remember that he looked a lot healthier than Bush leaving Japan.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online Denazifying Germany: German Protestantism and the Response to Denazification in the American Zone, 1945-1948 By Malcolm Coates University of York Department of History Master of Arts by Research September 2014 Abstract Following the Second World War, Germany underwent a process designed to remove elements of Nazism from its population called denazification, and this process was the most far reaching in the United States’ Zone. As Germany lay in ruins, the Church experienced a surge in popularity, and the Protestant church in particular began to explore issues of guilt and judgment. In this dissertation, I aim to explore the relationship between the US Military Government, led by General Lucius Clay, and the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD), led by Bishop Theophil Wurm, Martin Niemöller and others, on this issue of denazification. The first phase of denazification, which lasted from May 1945 – March 1946 was administered by the United States. This was the harshest phase of the process, where everyone in the US Zone had to defend their time during the war years, and many were arrested without trial simply for having an affiliation with Nazism. Due to the size of the task and the return home of many American troops, however, denazification was transferred over to German administration in 1946, and generally made more lenient thereafter. Although the council of the EKD accepted their own guilt at Stuttgart, they believed that denazification could not morally rehabilitate the Germans into society.
