    THE ASSOCIATION OF JEWISH LIBRARIES SYDNEY TAYLOR BOOK AWARDS The Sydney Taylor Book Award was established in honor of the author of the classic All of a Kind Family series by her husband, Ralph Taylor, to encourage the publication of outstanding books of positive Jewish content for children.     Jødene som søkte tilflukt i Frafjord Av: Christian F. Uhl, mai 2020 Historien om de norske jødene og deres skjebne under 2. verdenskrig er en vond historie. Heldigvis greide mange å flykte til Sverige, men for dem som ble igjen ventet det en grusom skjebne. Det som gjør denne historien ekstra vond er bevisstheten om likegyldigheten som ble jødene til del da registreringen og arrestasjonene kom – og ikke minst at det var norske politifolk og lensmenn som stod for det hele, etter ordre fra det nazistiske statspolitiet. Norge var det landet i Skandinavia som hadde færrest jøder da 2. verdenskrig brøt ut. De fleste av de tilsammen ca 2000 norske jødene hadde kommet hit fra Russland og de baltiske land rundt år 1900. De fleste drev med handelsvirksomhet, og etter hvert åpnet de butikker i de byene de slo seg ned. Da krigen brøt ut, var 22 av verdens 17 millioner jøder bosatt i Stavanger. Denne artikkelen tar for seg to familier, Fein og Reichwald, som søkte tilflukt innerst i Frafjord. Julius og Rösi Fein En av dem var Julius Fein som ble født i Klikoli i Litauen i 1885. Han kom til Norge i 1904, som en av flere søsken. Julius bodde flere steder i Norge før han flyttet til Stavanger. Han jobbet blant annet som taktekker hos broren Nathan i Arendal og drev egen manufakturforretning i Tønsberg. I 1911 solgte han denne butikken og flyttet til Stavanger der han åpnet en forretning, Berliner Bazaren A/S (senere Feins Magasin) i Østervåg 15. Han importerte og solgte mange slags varer som glass, porselen og leketøy.

However seating is limited and preference will be given to academics as well as to docents employed by the South African Holocaust & Genocide Foundation. A registration fee of R400 is required for the full conference, including teas and lunches. Pro-rata arrangements can be made for specific sessions. These are open at no cost to bonafide academics. The keynote lecture by Professor Sir Richard Evans on 21 August is open to the public at no cost. If you wish to attend the conference please email Janine Blumberg at: [email protected] The Kaplan Centre was established in 1980 under the terms of a gift to the University of Cape Town by the Kaplan Kushlick Foundation and is named in honour of the parents of Mendel and Robert Kaplan. The Centre, the only one of its kind in South Africa, seeks to stimulate and promote the whole field of Jewish studies and research at the University with a special focus on the South African Jewish Community. The Centre is multi-disciplinary in scope and encourages the participation of scholars in a range of fields including history, political science, education, sociology, comparative literature and the broad spectrum of Hebrew and Judaic studies. The Centre is engaged in research and acts as a co-ordinating unit in the university.

    An Urgent Statement from Hospitals in the City of Toronto and the Regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York GTA Hospitals Support Further Lockdown Measures December 20, 2020 - Today, on behalf of our patients, health care workers and staff, we are supporting the Ontario Hospital Association’s call for stronger lockdown measures from the Government of Ontario. Across the Greater Toronto Area, COVID-19 infections are continuing to rise, as are hospitalizations and intensive care cases. These trends show no sign of slowing – in fact, a surge in cases following the holiday season is expected to make the situation even worse. Our staff are caring for increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients in hospitals and assisting in other settings such as long-term care homes. They are also keeping up with the care needs of patients without COVID-19 and trying to make progress in the significant backlog of scheduled surgeries and procedures cancelled during the first wave. For many months now, these frontline health care workers have been devoting enormous energy and skill to caring for their patients, at the very epicenter of the pandemic. They are stressed and overstretched. This level of strain is simply not sustainable for much longer. We are seeing increasing numbers of staff becoming ill and not able to work – both with COVID-19 and other illnesses. While we are coping and planning for redeployment, we are seeing more illness and stress and hearing about the toll this is taking on people’s families. We recognize that lockdown measures are challenging for many members of our communities, but we cannot afford to put patients and health care workers at further risk.
