TUNGSTEN MINE THREATENS WAY OF LIFE OF THOUSANDS AND PLACES RAMSAR-SITE VERLORENVLEI AT HIGH RISK · We the people of the Verlorenvallei stand as one against a threat which could destroy our way of life and our valley. · We the farm workers, fishermen, farmers and entrepreneurs will not allow the pollution of our air, water or land or loss of our livelihoods for the sake of a greedy few. · We the lovers of nature reject further desecration of the already endangered Verlorenvlei and the unique and wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles and plants which have survived the depredations of humans. · We will protect the rare and largely unexplored rich pre-historical heritage for those who may follow us. · We have formed the Verlorenvlei Coalition; we are growing steadily, please join. The Verlorenvlei Coalition (VC) is a coalition of labour, business, civic organisations, environmental groups and local residents formed to preserve the integrity of the area and its people. We call our valley, which runs from Piketberg to Elands Bay, the Verlorenvallei. THE CHALLENGE: No less than 5 applicants have submitted applications to the DEPARTMENT OF MINING for the right to build an open-cast tungsten and molybdenum mine, one of these 50 hectares in extent and 200 metres deep, in the Moutonshoek Valley, between Piketberg and Elands Bay in the Western Cape. The Moutonshoek is a narrow valley, approximately 17 kilometres long and 3-4 kilometres wide, on the slopes of the Piketberg-mountain. THE VERLORENVLEI COALITION will oppose the proposed mining because: 1. It will destroy productive and profitable farms and detrimentally affect the food security of the Western Cape. -

DIRECTIONS FROM CAPE TOWN Take the N1 highway out of the city and then take the N7 highway in the direction of Malmesbury. Continue on the N7 for approx. 220km. Just after you start seeing the Clanwilliam Dam, look out for the off-ramp (to the left). At the T-junction you turn right to travel into the town of Clanwilliam. Stay on this road, passing two petrol stations on the left hand side. (Do NOT turn off to the right into the Main Road.) Stay on this road to travel out of the town in the direction of the mountain range. Approx 2km from the town (after a small hill), you turn left onto the road with a green signpost for Klawer. Look at your speedometer and note your kilometers. Approx 3.1 km on this road, you will see our gate & sign on the right hand side. Drive through our gate and up to the lodge. DIRECTIONS FROM THE WINELANDS There are a variety of routes depending on whether you are coming.If you are coming from Stellenbosch, take the R304 north. This road crosses over the main N2 highway and continues north to Malmesbury where the R304 merges with the R302 to continue as the R302. When you get to the town of Malmesbury, you follow signs for the N7 north towards Mooreesburg, PIketberg. Stay on the N7 for 158km and when you get to Clanwilliam, you follow the directions below…. If you are coming from Franschhoek or Paarl, travel to and through Paarl and then take the R44 north past Wellington. -

These BRT initia- tives are intended, among other goals, to formalize existing transport systems and to improve accessibility. However, the extent to which BRT reforms actually improve residents' ability to reach activities remains in question. In this dissertation, I contribute to the empirical and theoretical literature on informal transport by investigating how BRT reform has impacted accessibility for residents of Cape Town, South Africa. How have Cape Town's transport reforms affected accessibility and its distribution amongst different population groups? Why have reforms had these effects? I address these questions using three methods: (1) an accessibility index computed using a transport network model, (2) a difference-in-difference approach using intercept survey data, and (3) interviews with users and stakeholders.
