Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Auch dank der Produktion von Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Goatwhore) beweist ‘Red Before Black’, dass die Jungs keineswegs Altbekanntes wiederkäuen, sondern legen die Messlatte einmal mehr höher an als zuvor und stellen eindeutig klar, wer die Standards setzt, wenn es darum geht, zwingende Musik zu machen, die gleichzeitig brutal und komplex ist. Zudem hat sich die Band abermals angespornt, um sicherzugehen, dass die Scheibe aus ihrem bisherigen Katalog hervorsticht. "Im Laufe unserer Karriere versuchten wir immer, uns zu verbessern, sowohl in puncto Präzision beim Zusammenspielen, als auch auf produktionstechnischer Seite, ohne an Aggressivität einzubüßen. 'Red Before Black' setzt diese Tradition fort, ist aber vermutlich noch starker auf das Aggressive hin ausgerichtet. Präzise klingt das Album definitiv, zugleich aber auch so roh wie kaum etwas, das wir in jüngerer Zeit gemacht haben", findet Bassist Alex Webster. "wir haben uns ungeheuer angestrengt, um diese Songs auszuarbeiten, zu proben und auf das Niveau zu hieven, das uns vorschwebte, mehr noch als im Rahmen unserer letzten Alben", fügt Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz hinzu.

    Sociology Study, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 920‐930 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2015.12.003 DAVID PUBLISHING Simple but Dominant: How to Re­shine Depeche Mode on Album Covers After 80’s Cinla Sekera Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the album covers of English band Depeche Mode after 80’s according to the principles of graphic design. Established in 1980, the musical style of the band was turned from synth‐pop to new wave, from new wave to electronic, dance, and alternative‐rock in decades, but their message stayed as it was: A non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. As a graphic design product, album covers are pre‐print design solutions of two dimensional surfaces. Graphic design, as a design field, has its own elements and principles. Visual elements and typography are the two components which should unite with the help of the six main principles which are: unity/harmony; balance; hierarchy; scale/proportion; dominance/emphasis; and similarity and contrast. All album covers of Depeche Mode after 80’s were designed in a simple but dominant way in order to form a unique style. On every album cover, there are huge color, size, tone, and location contrasts which concluded in simple domination; domination of a non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. On addressing politics in your art Musician Neneh Cherry on what makes a good a collaborator, the headspace required for making thoughtful art, and why sometimes being quiet is a radical act. What’s the kind of headspace you need to be in when you’re working on music? It’s somewhat different every time, but recently I had a place that I wanted to go in my spirit and soul, through the songs and with the songs. I knew it was going to need me to be in a more… not a static place, exactly, but a more still place. It was almost like I could feel the songs around my head. Of course, the collaborative journey played an important part in actually reaching the goal. In the case of Broken Politics, I think we reached the goal I had in mind. I work with Cameron McVey, who is my husband and my creative partner, beyond just the spousal stuff. We’ve also had a very intimate creative journey. Quite often we’re working with other programmers and musicians when we’re writing, so there are all of these different things to figure out and negotiate. He’s a really fast writer. I’m a much slower writer. A lot of the time we’re in the studio by ourselves, each working at our own pace. Sometimes, even when you have an idea of where you want to go, it’s still a struggle getting there and getting past all the little weird obstacle courses that your brain sets up for you in order to get to that place where you’re creatively open.
