Case Study on Latanye Broom Industry

October 19 2006 1 Background Latanyé (Coccothrinax barbadensis) is a palm native to Saint Lucia. Its leaves are used to make craft and brooms. Latanyé is generally distributed throughout the Windward and Leeward Islands, including Trinidad and Tobago. Latanyé’s natural habitat ranges from “littoral and scrub woodlands near the coast, from sea level to 200 metres elevation”. (L. John 2001). The morphology of the leaves makes the plant resistant to strong wind currents. As it can grow on marginal soils, and appears to be tolerant against pests and diseases, Latanyé may be considered as an ideal plant for soil conservation works to reduce the rate of land degradation in St. Lucia. Figure 1 Photo of a Latanyé Plant Traditional Harvest of Latanyé Leaves In an ideal sustainable harvesting system, the older or mature Latanyé leaves are harvested and that the remainder of the plant regenerates and produces new leaves. 5 to 7 Latanyé leaves and a sturdy broom handle are used to make large brooms. Latanyé Broom (3- 5 days) Lyndon John (2001) described the broom industry in a socio economic context in 2001. The study revealed that Latanyé wild stocks were harvested “year round” to maintain livelihoods of rural people because of the available market and high demand for leaves for making brooms. -

The FMT Culebra Flora and Fauna Digital Photographic Databases are published by Fundación Mi Terruño, Inc. (FMT) with special permission and license from its author and amateur photographer, Manuel H. Dubón. The database presents and describes the flora found within the land site of a proposed sustainable resort-residential development of advance design designated as Villa Mi Terruño (VMT). It has been expanded to cover general flora of Culebra. FMT publishes this photographic website to offer Culebra residents, our island visitors, guest from Puerto Rico or afar and website visitors a visual and learning experience as they enjoy the Flora of Culebra in its entire splendor. It will hopefully enrich the visitors and residents life experience as they appreciate and better understand their subtropical environment in the Caribbean island of Culebra. The Flora Digital Database will also allow website visitors, students and professional and amateur naturalist to do research and enjoy a specialized photographic database of the dry subtropical Flora of Culebra with ample references. -

ABSTRACT Juglans jamaicensis subsp insularis, is an endemism of Pinar del Río, protected by Resolution 330/1999 of the Ministry of Agriculture included in the Red List of Cuban Vascular Flora. It is a species that has been little studied in its physiology and anatomy. The present study aims to characterize the stomas of Juglans jamaicensis subsp. insularis. Epidermal impressions were made with nail polish on both sides of the leaflets. These were observed with a novel optical microscope (NLCD-307 B). The length and width of the stomas were measured with a 40x lens, the density per unit area (cm²) and the stomatic index. The average size of the stomas is 16.5 μm wide and 19.9 μm long. -

A phylogeny of Solanaceae is presented based on the chloroplast DNA regions ndhF and trnLF. With 89 genera and 190 species included, this represents a nearly comprehensive genus-level sampling and provides a framework phylogeny for the entire family that helps integrate many previously-published phylogenetic studies within So- lanaceae. The four genera comprising the family Goetzeaceae and the monotypic families Duckeodendraceae, Nolanaceae, and Sclerophylaceae, often recognized in traditional classifications, are shown to be included in Solanaceae. The current results corroborate previous studies that identify a monophyletic subfamily Solanoideae and the more inclusive “x = 12” clade, which includes Nicotiana and the Australian tribe Anthocercideae. These results also provide greater resolution among lineages within Solanoideae, confirming Jaltomata as sister to Solanum and identifying a clade comprised primarily of tribes Capsiceae (Capsicum and Lycianthes) and Physaleae. -
