You might say that punk has played a pivotal role in my life. Needless to say, I have also seen a great deal of media misrepresentation over the years. I completely agree with Craig O’Hara’s perception when he states in his fine introduction to American punk rock, self-explanatorily entitled The Philosophy of Punk: More than Noise, that “Punk has been characterized as a self-destructive, violence oriented fad [...] which had no real significance.” (1999: 43.) He quotes Larry Zbach of Maximum RockNRoll, one of the better known international punk fanzines1, who speaks of “repeated media distortion” which has lead to a situation wherein “more and more people adopt the appearance of Punk [but] have less and less of an idea of its content. -
“Put the Fun Between Your Legs!”: the Politics and Counterculture of the Bicycle
“PUT THE FUN BETWEEN YOUR LEGS!”: THE POLITICS AND COUNTERCULTURE OF THE BICYCLE by Zachary Mooradian Furness B.A. Pennsylvania State University, 1999 M.A. University of Pittsburgh, 2001 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2005 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Zachary Mooradian Furness It was defended on October 20, 2005 and approved by Gordon Mitchell, Associate Professor, Department of Communication Andrew Weintraub, Associate Professor, Department of Ethnomusicology Co-Advisor: Carol Stabile, Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Dissertation Advisor: Jonathan Sterne, Associate Professor, McGill University ii Copyright © by Zachary Mooradian Furness 2005 iii “PUT THE FUN BETWEEN YOUR LEGS!”: THE POLITICS AND COUNTERCULTURE OF THE BICYCLE Zachary Mooradian Furness, PhD University of Pittsburgh This project is a cultural study of bicycles and the politics that inform the everyday practice of cycling. Through a close examination of media, rhetoric, and protest, I focus my attention on groups of people who believe that bicycles are not merely forms of transportation, rather, they are instruments of communication, sources of identity, vehicles for pleasure, and tools for technological, cultural, and political critique. This ‘counterculture’ is comprised of feminists, socialists, punks, anti-globalization activists, writers, environmentalists, and others who have created and developed a politics of cycling through a dialectic of communication and action. Through this dialectical process, these cyclists have not only created an important body of knowledge that speaks to issues of gender, class, culture, technology, and ideology, they also demonstrate both how these issues are interrelated and how people can actively negotiate and contest their meanings. -
Fanzines and Alternative Music Cultures in Ireland
‘Against The Rest’: Fanzines and Alternative Music Cultures in Ireland Ciarán Ryan Department of Media and Communication Studies Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick This thesis is submitted to the University of Limerick in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisor: Dr Tony Langlois September 2015 Abstract This thesis investigates the role of fanzines in developing music communities in Ireland. It explores these fan-produced texts from the emergence of the first Irish punk fanzines in 1977 to the present, questioning their significance, while critiquing previous studies into fanzine cultures (Duncombe, 2008; Triggs, 2010). It looks at how ‘authenticity’ is a central construct in the design, content, and dissemination of these artefacts, establishing a ‘dominant representational paradigm’ (Hamilton, 1997) for the production and consumption of fanzines. Fanzines are primarily found in alternative music cultures, and this work situates the makers and users as members of local ‘scenes’ (Cohen, 1991; Straw, 1991), and proposes a more fluid or tribal (Maffesoli, 1996; Bennett, 1999) framework, where communities are formed through shared taste (Bourdieu, 1984). Central to this work is the position of capital, particularly Bourdieu’s concepts of cultural capital and social capital. It also examines the role of such capital in developing fan hierarchies, particularly in local music-making activities (Finnegan, 1989). This work crucially positions the fanzine as a fan practice, and the fans that made and consumed these works will be analysed to determine the range of (popular music) fandom (Duffett, 2014) in Irish DIY (do-it-yourself) cultures. Finally, this study explores whether there has been a significant paradigmatic shift in fan media with the emergence of new technologies. -

THE LEGACY and IMPACT of NEW YORK CITY HARDCORE PUNK and STRAIGHT EDGE in the 1980S by Alan Parkes
CONTRIBUTOR BIO ALAN PARKES is a student at California State Polytechnic University of Pomona and is cur- rently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in History and Philosophy. Academically, he is particularly interested in nineteenth and twentieth-century American social history. He is a native of Fresno, California and enjoys evening bike rides and spending time with his cats, Jim and Honey. THIS SMALL WORLD: THE LEGACY AND IMPACT OF NEW YORK CITY HARDCORE PUNK AND STRAIGHT EDGE IN THE 1980S By Alan Parkes Punk rock is known for its raw energy and archaic simplicity, overlooking a history of complexity, diversity, and evolution by an almost constant and uniform perception from outside sources as the essence of the mantra, “sex, drugs, and rock & roll.” With this, a spirit of social change in hardcore punk is generally unaccounted for in the media’s perception of nihilism and violence in the music and subculture. The aim of my research is to examine punk and hardcore subculture in a holistic manner and to identify how this group of bands, promoters, and fans was an anomaly in youth culture that has largely been overlooked and replaced by the media’s portrayal. This has been particularly true of the scene in New York City. In the 1980s, the City revealed itself to be a bastion of unique hardcore punk rock that attempted to tackle the problems of inner-city life and soon after embraced much larger social and ethical issues. My research is focused on New York’s inner city, bands, venues, promoters, and the “kids” who created a radical and socially conscious hardcore punk scene in New York City from 1980 to 1991 with an emphasis on straight edge.121 121 To be straight edge is to refrain from drugs, alcohol, and promiscuous sex. -
Folkzine a Nature Inspired D.I.Y
Folkzine A nature inspired D.I.Y. produced fanzine No. 1 Andreas Nilsson Rapsvägen 48 263 54 Lerberget [email protected] Sweden http://folkzine.awardspace.com Oi Polloi Reviews Nuclear Death Terror Art Cruachan Vegan Recipes Attack to Society Thoughts & Ideas Distros/Labels It all started a late October night in 2005 when I was all alone home. I sat listening to music and reading a friend of mines personal fanzine, which I’d got a week ago or something like that. When I had finished reading it, a small thought Bands: popped up in my head: “Hey! Why not give it a go?”. And I went straight to the computer and started working on a front cover for the fanzine. But when I reached a certain point, I realized I had to come up with a name. I wanted my zine to differ from most of the zines already available here in Sweden, and I wanted to do it in English, so I could reach out to more people. I’ve always been a very nature loving per son, and it’s something that is very important to me. And since folk-music and such inspires and makes me happy I thought of the name: “Folkzine”, to symbolize multitude and my distinct interest in those matters. Now when I had the name, I tried to figure out what else content I wanted in my zine. And since cooking is one of my favourite things to do, vegan recipes were an obvious Andreas addition. Music is also a very important part in my life; therefore I simply had to have some reviews, to spread the Fanzines: word of the music I like. -
Aesthetic of Our Anger. Anarcho-Punk, Politics and Music Edited by Mike Dines & Matthew Worley
Minor Compositions Open Access Statement – Please Read This book is open access. This work is not simply an electronic book; it is the open access version of a work that exists in a number of forms, the traditional printed form being one of them. All Minor Compositions publications are placed for free, in their entirety, on the web. This is because the free and autonomous sharing of knowledges and experiences is important, especially at a time when the restructuring and increased centralization of book distribution makes it difficult (and expensive) to distribute radical texts effectively. The free posting of these texts does not mean that the necessary energy and labor to produce them is no longer there. One can think of buying physical copies not as the purchase of commodities, but as a form of support or solidarity for an approach to knowledge production and engaged research (particularly when purchasing directly from the publisher). The open access nature of this publication means that you can: • read and store this document free of charge • distribute it for personal use free of charge • print sections of the work for personal use • read or perform parts of the work in a context where no financial transactions take place However, it is against the purposes of Minor Compositions open access approach to: • gain financially from the work • sell the work or seek monies in relation to the distribution of the work • use the work in any commercial activity of any kind • profit a third party indirectly via use or distribution of the work • distribute in or through a commercial body (with the exception of academic usage within educational institutions) The intent of Minor Compositions as a project is that any surpluses generated from the use of collectively produced literature are intended to return to further the development and production of further publications and writing: that which comes from the commons will be used to keep cultivating those commons.
