The Vatican Museum contain an immense wealth of art. The museums offer a great variety of collections from ancient Greek to Etruscan art and of course Renaissance art. Vatican Museum is located within the Vatican City, in Rome. 3 HISTORY The Sistine Chapel stands on the foundation of an older chapel called the Capella Magna. In 1477, Pope Sixtus IV started a rebuilding of the chapel. The chapel’s exterior is simple and unassuming. In 1503, pope Julius II, decided to change some of the Sistine Chapel's decorations. He commissioned the artist Michelangelo to do it. Pope Clement VII commissioned Michelangelo to paint the giant fresco "The Last Judgment« in 1536. 4 MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in the small village of Caprese in 1475 and died in Rome in 1564. In his life he painted and scolished a lot of important paintings and sculptures. The most important are: • The Pieta • David • The Creation of Adam • The Last Jugdement 5 SANDRO BOTTICELLI Sandro Botticelli was born around 1445 in Florence and died in Florence in 1510. His most important works are: • Adoration of Magi • Primavera • The Birth of Venus. 6 DOMENICO GHIRLANDAIO Domenico Ghirlandaio was born in Florence in 1449 and died in Florence in 1494. His most important works are: • The Birth of the Virgin • The Visitation 7 THE NORTH WALL 8 THE VOCATION OF THE FIRST APOSTLES The Vocation of the First Apostles is a fresco by Domenico Ghirlandaio made in 1481-1482. The Vocation scene is divided between foreground and background The most original element of the work is the multitude of spectators 9 THE DELIVERY OF KEYS The Delivery of the Keys is a fresco by Pietro Perugino made in 1481-1482. The theme of the decoration was the parallelism between the Stories of Moses and those of Christ. 10 TRIALS OF CHRIST Trials of Christ is a fresco by Sandro Botticelli made between 1480 and 1482. The scene of the Trials of Christ depicts the three Temptations of Jesus . 11 12 The south wall is divided into 4 horizontal bands: • the first includes the lunettes • the second represents a series of Popes • the third band represents the stories of Moses Lunettes • the fourth band sees paintings of drapes Series of Popes Stories of Moses Drapes 13 JOURNEY OF MOSES IN EGYPT There are 6 paintings depicting The Stories of Moses. Today the Old Testament cycle starts from the Journey of Moses in Egypt painted by Perugino. On the left background is a group of shepherds. 14 YOUTH OF MOSES Botticelli painted the second panel that describes the Youth of Moses in 1481. The fresco shows several episodes of Moses' youth taken from Exodus: • the killing of the Egyptian • Moses fights the shepherds • Moses receives from God the task to return • Moses drives the Jews to the Promised Land 15 Simonetta Vespucci 16 PUNISHMENT OF THE SONS OF KORAH Botticelli also painted the fifth panel in 1482.
